For a presentation (yes another one) I'm asking the class about different stereotypes, but obviously I can't ask them until tomorrow when I'm presenting

Now I've made a list of my own but I think it's more authentic if I get real people's opinions on gender stereotypes.

Just a couple from each of you on male and female stereotypes.

Thanks x

Are you asking for examples of gender stereotypes or people’s opinions on some of the common ones and what we think of them?

Don't do it. Apparently 'Run' 'I Kissed A Girl' and 'Bad Romance' aren't good enough for "favourite pop songs by female artists"

Ashley.

Quite an old-fashioned one (you might get extra brownie points for making historical points, too?)

Women - stay at home and look after the children
Men - go out to work and bring home the dollar

I guess there are both positive and negative gender stereotypes so I’ll try and list a few for each side.

Positives

Women - social, nurturing, pretty, tidy, caring
Men - logical, strong, stoic, protective, in charge

Negatives

Women - overly emotional, clingy, weak, high maintenance, gold diggers, hoes, **** drivers, and stereotypes according to hair color (ditzy blondes, evil redheads)
Men - cold, aggressive, controlling, impulsive, lazy, messy

I guess you could slip in the odd reference or two re. traditional gender roles (male breadwinner, female housewife) but that’s quite old hat and outdated so I don’t know if you’d entertain going down that route.

I dunno if that helps in any way.

Bring up the "women are better parents than men" thing please. It pees me of so much that people are saying it like it's a known fact. They were even talking about it on Loose Women one day that men shouldn't be allowed to have privileges to see their children if they are in jail, but women can. Even if they did the same crime.

Urgh. Men can be as good a parent, and in some cases, much better parents.

Others that you should bring up....

Women are weak. Men are strong.

Males are all chauvinistic and just want to have sex all the time.

Women shouldn't play sports

Men love Videogames and Women love shopping (when in some cases it can be opposite)

DIY jobs just for men

Men can't multi-task

Women cook and clean, men work for money.

Also, men can't be raped or sexually abused.

Heard so many stories of police turning men away with this. Tragic.

"Men can't multi-task"

No one can Multi task
you end up making errors

I can watch 5 TV's with Subtitles on
so I move my eyes over the subtitles
One has a Story I need
volume goes up on that one.

Women are better at multi tasking. Men are better at thinking about doing something.
Women have a cold, whilst men have flu.
Men are warmakers, whilst women are peacekeepers.

..I often find stereotypes interesting, things like blue/pink as you say...many parents have decorated their baby's bedroom in the 'stereotypical colour scheme'/blue for boys/pink for girls...so a conditioning thing..?..of associating that colour with security/warmth/safety etc, that some still feel through their adult lives..?..stereotype male/more aggressive and female/more nurturing/passive etc...and associated with 'typical childhood toys'..girls = prams/dolls etc/boys = toy weapons/trains/cars etc... a stereotype of females being the cook/chef of the house/'in the kitchen' more.../young girls sometimes being encouraged more to bake with mum/young boys not always so much...(..my OH is a great cook and he always cooked with his mum..)..

...obviously these are generalisations and I think applied 'back in the day' more..but I know from working in a school, they do still exist/the conditioning 'to be male'/and the conditioning 'to be female'...still sometimes a potentially added factor in making it hard for people to feel that they can be who they are because they have the added thing of breaking free of a conditioned stereotype...yeah interesting...

...good luck with your presentation today, Jonathan....

..stereotype of males being the ones who barbecue/I'm quite happy with that one specifically because I'm not keen on the working of a barbecue...and the guys in my life seem to love doing them...especially when they have barbecue tongues that look like Jedi wands and light up etc...me Jedi steak knight...
