George Gaynes has died at the age of 98, his family have confirmed.
The Police Academy actor, who starred in all seven of the films, passed away on Monday in North Bend, Washington.
His daughter Iya Gaynes Falcone Brown confirmed the news on Wednesday morning, while his long-time agent Jonathan Howard said that it was a ‘sad, sad loss.’
He told The Hollywood Reporter: “The last couple times I got in touch with him, even in his 90s, he was always happy to take the call and consider something.
“He was really one of the true gentlemen in this business and was working steadily for 50 years or more. A sad, sad loss. But he had a really long, great life.”
Gaynes, best known for his role as Commandant Eric Lassard in the Police Academy films, also had starring roles in films including Punky Brewster and Tootsie.
He was also famous for his small-screen roles on shows including Mission: Impossible, Hawaii Five-0 and The Six million Dollar Man.
Gaynes retired from acting in 2003 after his last film role in Just Married, opposite Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy.
