View Full Version : Dolphin dies after being taken from ocean and passed around for selfies by beachgoers
A young dolphin has died after beachgoers took it from the sea to pose for photographs with it.
Huge crowds gathered around the small animal on the beach resort at Santa Teresita in Argentina after one man picked it up.
But it appears it quickly overheated and died while out of the water.
It was still being passed around by the beachgoers after its death and was later left discarded in the sand.

(More in the article but it contains pictures of the dolphin as it's dying and then of it dead in the sand after they were done with it)
FUMED. I DESPISE them.

i completely agree with you, Amy
it was their fault the dolphin died, because it Dolphins need water to live and breathe
they can't survive without water, because they don't have lungs
you got a lot of animal cruelty on this planet, and it makes me sick

Some people care more about taking selfies than anything else.
Awful people.
They should be ashamed of themselves but sadly I think they will be too busy showing others their selfies of them with a dolphin.

Umm... Dolphins do have lungs and don't need water to breathe. They're mammals, not fish. This dolphin died from overheating and dehydration, because they're supposed to be in cool water, not being tossed around in the sun...
All of which makes it far worse, of course, for one because it would be a slow and horrible way to go and also because, while fish are pretty much instinct-driven and unintelligent, not really able to comprehend life and death, Dolphins are not... They are clever, sentient beings and so this one was probably terrified, and likely knew that it was going to die :(
Also, it will have a family that will miss it and will have no idea what happened to it after it was snatched from the sea, though they will likely know that it was snatched. Quite horrific when you think about it.

i'm sorry for this late comment
alright, yeah i had this at school at biology, probably not very good paying attention to it i guess
but thanks for the reminder of the blow hole, now i understand it completely
..the baby dolphin was alive when it was removed from the water...it did seem to be removed with some care but not only was it vulnerable because it was a baby, it was also a Franciscana dolphin, which are a diminishing species...with only around 30,000 left in the world...
..a statement from the Argentine Wildlife Foundation, who would know how the baby dolphin died and that it died out of the water/as a result of being taken out..and a public reminder in hope that no one would think to do it again...the pics that I've seen of how extremely quickly it's skin and body burned in the sun with how it was left are really quite grim...and it froze/didn't thrash about because, with being separated from it's mum as well as taken out of the water, I would think that maybe it went into shock...
"The Franciscana, like other species, cannot remain for much time outside of the water, it has thick fatty skin which gives it heat and means that taking it out of the water rapidly causes it to dehydrate and die," it said in a statement.
"This occasion serves to inform the public about the urgent necessity to return these dolphins to the sea as soon as possible if they find them on the shore.
"It is fundamental that people help to rescue these animals, because every Franciscana counts now."

all news outlets are now reporting the dolphin was dead and was one of many washed up that day.
..I guess all news outlets know more about species of dolphins than marine experts do and the causes of death, we'll see if they report differently to what they already have...

...well the Argentine Wildlife Trust has confirmed that it's death was a direct result of having been taken out of the water, the Wildlife Trust's involvement is because of the vulnerability of that particular species and there being so few of them in existence in the world...so I'll just go with their many studies and knowledge and bow to that..and you can go with all news outlets and their take on it all..(or just give it up, parmnion.....)...welcome to off season btw...

http://nervemedia.org.uk/nerve/endangered-dolphin-was-already-dead-when-taken-out-the-sea-for-selfies/
Well, if "nervemedia" says that "one of the tourists who took a selfie" has said that it was dead, then I guess we all have egg on our faces. Not that, you know, one of the tourists who took a selfie with it might be trying to deflect some of the blame/shame by claiming that it was already dead.
I have watched the video and it is alive at first. It's dead by the end. It does sort of look like some of the people in the crowd are trying to help it while others are just trying to touch it / take pictures. TBH it looks like most of the crowd is just there "because there's a crowd" and they're trying to see what the drama is all about.
But yeah. It isn't thrashing about all over the place but it does move its tail and flippers a few times at the start of the video, after being taken out of the water. If it was washed up dead, then it's a zombie dolphin.
Also worth noting is that there's already a fair crowd at the START of the video, which would suggest that the dolphin was first plucked from the water a good bit of time before someone started filming.
