Maria Sharapova fails drugs test

Former world number one Maria Sharapova has revealed she failed a drugs test at the Australian Open.

The Russian, 28, tested positive for meldonium, a substance she has been taking since 2006 for health issues.

Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion, said she was not yet aware of the sanctions she will face.

"I failed the test and take full responsibility for that," said Sharapova, who won Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 2004.

"I had been taking this medicine for the past 10 years, but on 1 January this became a prohibited substance which I did not know."

She added: "I received an email on 22 December from Wada [World Anti-Doping Agency] about the changes happening to the banned list and you can see prohibited items, and I didn't click on that link."

Sharapova is ranked seventh in the world but has played just four tournaments since Wimbledon last July as she has struggled with an arm injury.

Her most recent match was a defeat by Serena Williams at the Australian Open in January, but Sharapova, who turns 29 in April, hopes to be able to return to tennis in the future.

"I made a huge mistake," she said.

"I know I face consequences and I didn't want to end my career this way. I hope I will be given the chance to play this game again."

It wasn't a performance enhancer, just a banned substance by the tennis committee that was prescribed by her doctor. she is still amazing in my eyes and the fact she was honest about it and actually announced it was a brave decision and shows that she isn't really problematic.

Well maybe it's how I come across because that's all I see when reading media In fact there was an article of Serena VS Maria trying to make it seem like Serena's tennis success was all good but Maria was the REAL winner because of her endorsements. That's commonplace in the modern entertainment industry though. Kate Moss lost all her deals in the cocaine scandal and they came running back afterwards.

I do think though that this scandal is going to really shed a light on these more 'ambiguous' performance enhancers not just in tennis but the wider sporting industry as well, personally I could see a lot more similar situations coming out in the future. As for Maria her penalty is going to depend IMO on how the ITF determine the penalty. If they go by the letter of the law and treat it as an illegal substance usage for 28 days I could see potentially 6 to 12 months. If they go hard and treat it as a 10 year usage she'll get the four.

It's being blown out of proportion anyway, It's something she's been taking for 10 years and has only just become banned. I was speaking to someone at work and she said it could be the reason Maria can actually play tennis, without it theres the risk of having no energy to play and fainting regularly

And she and team were advised on 22/12 that this drug would be in the banned list, it's pretty suspicious that a top athlete wouldn't be on top of updates. She said she constantly kept herself informed but this time conveniently forgot to keep up.:fist:

Observation mostly. 14-16 Rafa was already beating top players with the same physical style. He beat Moya, Juan Carlos, Roddick, Roger in Indian wells I think. Novak couldn't finish a match without medical time out for breathing or other issues and this wasn't that long ago. He hardly has those breathing issues now. How can he claim it's all gone just because of gluten free diet? I don't know I never bought it.
