View Full Version : Champion Tipster Game (Cheltenham)

Cheltenham Horse-racing festival starts next week, Tuesday to Friday.

I'm trying to think up some kind of gambling game we could have on here for it, if anyone's interested?

So far I've come up with an idea that we could start the beginning of the festival with so many TIBB pounds so we can place bets at TIBB bookmakers, I could put the runners and starting prices (at the time of being posted) up the night before each day's racing and we can pick out which horse and how much we put on in each race.

The winner will be the one with the biggest total of winnings at the end of the festival.:shrug:

Thoughts?

Any other Ideas?

Ok, if we can get at least around ten people, then we'll give it a go.

If it works out ok we could do Aintree next month, and Royal Ascot in the Summer.

If we are to do it, I could do with a few suggestions has to rules, starting budget and things.

I'll put 7pm on Monday deadline for entry.

£100 Starting Bank.
WIN and EACH WAY Bets allowed.

I suggest all odds for Each Way bets, Starting Prices, and Bets are settled in accordance with Tattersalls Rules of Betting.

We ought to rope ToySoldier in as he is a Betting Shop Manager.

Oh -- and if LT is in the lead coming up to the final race of the festival, I say we disqualify him. :hee:

I know you can get an odds calculator on google, that's how I intended to work out who's won what.

What about forecasts and Tricasts, doubles and trebles, accumulators? do you think these sort of things could make it to complicated?

And I'd like an age limit of 18, I don't want to be accused of introducing minors into gambling.

put me down for this

Talking about Cheltenham and winners, a mate of mine once backed a 66/1 winner at Cheltenham.

The form figures read:

PPPFFFBBP

Which for non-punters means:

P = Pulled Up - the horse did not finish
F = Fell
B = Brought Down - by another horse falling alongside and bringing this one down with it.

I asked him what the feck made him back that, and he looked at me as if I was an idiot and said;

"Its form".

Asked to explain, he said;

"PPPFFFBBP - Pissed in, Pissed in, Pissed in, Flew in, Flew in, Flew in, Blew in, Blew in, Pissed in." :laugh:

Jesus, Kirk, I'll be settling enough bets as it is this week :umm2:.

Although, to be honest, Cheltenham Festival slippage and turnover (industry wide) has waned a bit in recent years. Used to be pretty hectic but these days I wouldn't say any day is busier than an average Saturday, except maybe the Friday. Horses have been dropping quite steadily in popularity.

Grand National on the other hand gets busier every year :bawling:.

Nah, horses and dogs are down industry wide across all platforms; even more so in England than Scotland. Punters putting more money into football, general sports and of course the "crack cocaine of the high street" - slots and roulette. More money going on other products means less money on racing, basically. Online actually takes an even smaller proportion on horses compared to football etc. than in shop. This is because younger people are less interested in racing , and more likely to use online. For example, in shop you'll see a lot of racing promotions and price boosts etc. Aimed at the old codgers who have plenty of pension to burn but no idea how to work a smartphone, whereas online you'll see a lot more sports promotion like massive price boosts for new customers.

There's far less focus on racing for attracting new customers also, because they prefer to gain brand loyalty from younger people. Because old people will be dead soon innit, not a good long term investment...

That's right guys! Betting on the horses means you're past it :joker:. Seriously the split is quite visible. The young guys will place a horse bet here and there while they're in, but they are THERE for football and roulette. On the flip side, the old guys will fill out a football coupon or two and some maybe stick their change in a machine, but they're there to crawl the walls and pour over the racing post. And eat their stinky lunch. And "run" with their dodgy hips to the counter as soon as the race goes off. And get pissy when they're told they're too late. Or if they lose, insist that it must have been late so they should get their money back.......

I love my job so much. :umm2:

My fav part of today: my least favourite (most hated?) big customer, a seriously rude and detestable bigot of a man who I have had multiple run ins with, lost his biggest bet of the day (£500). Just as I was closing, I found a crumpled bet slip (top copy, unprocessed) of his for the same amount in the same race, on the horse that actually won it. He obviously second guessed himself and discarded it. Would have returned £3000 :hee:. Such sad story, makesed my day. :joker:

Seriously though this guy is a horror. I'd have gotten rid of him long ago if he didn't single-handedly account for almost 80% of our entire greyhounds turnover :umm2:.
