Survivor New Zealand - Premieres May 7

A New Zealand adaptation of long-running hit reality show Survivor has been confirmed by TV2 - and it was instantly mocked on Twitter.

Applications have opened for those wanting to be contestants on the show, a statement from TV2 said.

The hit reality show makes teams live in tribes on remote islands and compete in challenges with limited food and supplies, with contestants forming alliances and eliminating each other one by one.

The last remaining survivor wins US$1 million, although TV2 hasn't yet confirmed prize money, the location or host. Applicants need a current passport to apply.

"Do you have what it takes to compete in the ultimate test of endurance, strength and strategy all in a far flung tropical location?" the statement asked.

"How much do you want to be the sole Survivor and walk away with a huge cash prize?

"This series will see Kiwi contestants battle it out, competing in reward and immunity challenges, with weekly eliminations by tribal vote. But only one will survive."

Applicants need to be over 18, a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, no criminal record, have a current passport and be in "good physical and mental health".

I didn't know this was like an EXACT COPY of US Survivor (even the theme song, intro, Jeff Probst look-alike and everything, I thought it'd have its own spin on everything). :joker: I might actually give this a chance at some point since it's the same thing, I thought it'd be a bit different and then maybe I wouldn't like it but I like that sneak peek. Felt a tiny bit cheesy and lower-budget but not too bad.

It was... okay... but there's, like, a lot of room for improvement (hi, KiwiJeff who doesn't seem to know how to ask a good Tribal Council question and has already inadvertently tanked one person's game)

I suppose the best part was Dee's "I'VE WATCHED EVERY EPISODE OF SURVIVOR TWENTY EIGHT TIMES, I SPEND FOUR HUNDRED HOURS OF MY WEEK LISTENING TO SURVIVOR PODCASTS" speech and the completely indifferent reaction it got from the cast <3

So was the Australian version, the presenter there was full of Probst mannerisms.


This is similar in a worrying way to the Australian version too. It had the host talking about 'playing this game with honour' and then one of the contestants saying they had a 'tribe of heroes' after voting the 'villain' out. If we keep hearing that stuff it will have the same problems as the Australian version.

Second ep, yet more on values and honour. Sala reminds me of the hat guy from the Australian one talking about his honour/values all the time. Shay reminds me of Brooke, and she's got her female alliance too.

I don't see why they told them about redemption island, better to keep it secret.

For all of it's faults (which could very well be teething problems that will improve as the episodes go on) i still enjoyed it more than i do watching the scripted mess that the US version has turned into.
Every new Season is filled with more people that you know (some extremely well!) than new fresh characters and the impeccably timed ''i need an idol, i found an idol'' skits and the blatant foretelling of who will be evicted every week are just getting more ludicrous with every new Season!

episode 5 was quite boring, how predictable was the result of the RI challenge. The main drama was a potential medivac.

episode 6 -

at last a shakeup of the tribes. As they don't seem to have immunity idols this was desperately needed. Turns out it just made individual people of the two original ribes automatically on the outs, the eliminated one probably wishes she hadn't been so cliquey now. You have to play a broader game knowing there could be a tribe mix up. The face off at redemption island is now between the two sides.

The irony in the episode was that they were talking about throwing the challenge, but didn't once the tribe change up happened. They actually had even more reason to throw it after that twist, rather stupid not to see that.

I'm actually enjoying this way more than the recent US seasons! They show far more of the general goings-on around camp and the scheming and stuff instead of the 60 seconds of filler in between the comps and tribal that you get on Jeffrey's Survivor hosted by The Probst with special guest Jeff Probst. :laugh:

If there's one thing i hate on Survivor it's those people who do practically nothing, get saved just as they were about to get evicted and then, two episodes later, after stabbing those who saved them in the backs get an almighty ego explosion and hold court from a hammock!

I've always thought that this was probably the reason why Survivor never really took off here in the UK. We used to be far more loyal and hold our honesty and morals in high regard. That being said though, it might do better in our current ''Me,me, me and **** everyone else'' climate.

I really don't buy this line that they were waiting on Nate and Barb to decide, them and Jack were 3 against the others 4, so that line actually made little sense to me. It's like the editors are trying to build up Barb, but it's not giving the full picture.

RI challenge - just seemed all luck, Sala got most of the symbols on their first appearance. I think he was likely to lose a memory challenge v Mike anyway, but with the luck element (too small a playing area?) it was over very quickly.

Yeah, i've come to that conclusion myself many times but seeing as i've watched every Season of US Survivor and pretty much every International Season i've also come to the conclusion that there's something (not quite sure what. The lovely tropical locations maybe ?) that keeps me coming back for more!

I think it's just that i've always been all about loyalty, honour and all of that good stuff and i find it very difficult to switch it on and off. :shrug:

So it's finished, they had 4 episodes in a few days.

Really limped to its end for me, no competitions in the final episode.

Nate even apparently said he was happy at being fourth, and just self eliminated in effect

Way too much in the speeches and the questions/statments about being an example, playing with honour etc. It's like the Australian version taken to extreme. Shay even ignored gameplay in her questions. Shannon hinted at least in a question that there was more than whether you were a 'good' person. I guess Sala tried to have some impact at the tribal, though he of course had nothing to say about gameplay.

All this I believe was fostered by the producers who wanted to follow the Australian season, but they forgot to put more gameplayers in to mix it up more. Too many gameplayers in this even reneged on it as the season went on, Shannon and even Shay by the end. That superfan who said she would play a villain if needed was missed, but I'm not sure how many had strong potential in this cast.

It tells you everything that they are talking about Barb being the master strategist of the season lol. And the host talking about it representing how kiwis would play, blah.

I mean, it was obvious from the start who the winner would be, but I at least had some hope that either Shay or Shannon (or both) would put up a fight 'til the end... and yet the best result I had to settle for was Barb being dragged to the FTC as a goat? The first episode was an improvement on the first season, though I wish we had a bit more on the strategy before the vote. The highlight was probably the exploding rocks, the second reward challenge and the immunity one were quite good. The goofy guy is annoying though.

The SA version has been better. This was better than their first season, maybe about the same as the last Australian one which annoyed me at times but was viewable. Some of the contestants still lapsed into the whole integrity/honour thing that dominated the previous season.
