View Full Version : Big Brother opinions that you've had, that have changed retrospectively?
Whether it's because you re-watched a series, read post-social media, or developed a new understanding of relationships, social structures whatever. Was there any housemate you felt a certain way towards in the house but then differently now? My personal experiences include:
1) Hazel (BB14). I really didn't like her at the time as I felt like she was manipulating and using Daley. Having said that, since then, experiencing this sort of situation myself and understanding the notion of victim-blaming better, I appreciated her situation in the house far more and like her as a housemate now.
2) Rachel (BB9). I loved her when I first watched and for the longest time she was my favorite housemate ever. Until I experienced post-social media Rachel interactions as well as understood how her winning BBUK was largely due to people relating to a passive girl in a positive way, due to gender constructs in society etc. Not saying that's the only reason people like her by any means but just an understanding i've personally come to have.
3) Helen (BB15). I really liked her and wanted her to win because I notoriously despised Ashleigh. Having said that, they are just as bad as each other and I believe that two wrongs definitely don't make a right. It was the worst final 2 ever in my opinion, where mean people really were appreciated over kind ones.
4) Pete (BB7). The first time I watched the series I really warmed to him, but I was also very young. Since then, rewatching I saw through his gimmicks and his manipulative desires to win and really went off him as a housemate.
Just some examples I thought of.
I never used to be much for Aisleyne - that changed when I re watched the first 4/5 weeks of BB7.
I used to think Emma was literally one of the only good housemates in BB5 when actually Michelle and Nadia are just as good as her.
I never used to be much for housemates like Saskia, like I had no opinion on her really, but now I like her and she's in my top 20.

Anyways there aren't many as I watched all seasons last year but I watched BB14 live and:
- I liked Callum but now I think he's an awful arrogant douche.
- I loved Dexter but now I think he's just dull.
- I hated Sallie but now looking back she's an amazing housemate and brought the dramz.
I don't think any of my opinions have changed, it's probably because I haven't re-watched a lot of seasons

can we stop with the Helen/Ashleigh "just as bad as each other" comments :nono: she was 1000 times worse :fist:
for me, I've only rewatched BB6 once and the only opinions I noticed changing were that I liked Eugene a lot more (hated him at the time for making me lose Derek </3) and also enjoyed Roberto's idiocy more. I went a bit off Science as well but still liked him.
In terms of BBCAN/USA:
1) Nicole (BB16USA) - At the time I really didn't like her and even shared the nickname 'Nicflop' to describe her. Having said that, I think my dislike of her was rooted in the blonde girl stereotype that has come time and time again on Big Brother. Also, re-watching the season, I saw how she grew as a person over the course of the series, making her appreciate her much more as a housemate.
2) Graig (BBCAN3) - I hated him when he was on the show. He made some rude remarks about people of color and really rubbed me the wrong way. Having said that, re-watching the season and seeing how he checked himself after he left, I really grew some respect for him. It's always nice to see people learn from their mistakes.
Will add more as I think of them!
Oh and growing up watching with my mum I usually preferred housemates she liked such as Pete, Samanda ect. Now I'm older I can have my own opinions and I much prefer people like Aisleyne/Charley from their series' (I still adored Nikki at the time).

This is a really good point! Age plays such a big role in housemates you like and how you are influenced by the people around you! I think me liking Rachel so much when I was 13 had a lot to do with age - she was super relatable to a 13 year old whereas not so much to perhaps a 20 year old!

I liked Samanda at the time, but honestly they were really dull and I've only noticed this from my current BB8-rewatch. Nice enough girls but dull and didn't deserve to be the longest-lasting BB8 females out of the originals. As much as I dislike Chanel she was a better HM than they were.

I'm just articulating the fact that I think it's much harder for a more vocal or outspoken girl to be successful at Big Brother, and I could back that up with so many examples whereas men who have been outspoken and vocal are often praised by the public for their behavior!

Yes! Watching feed clips of Jeff (BB11/13) post season definitely resonated the same way with me. He was portrayed as this kind, loyal american prince charming type when really on the feeds he said a lot of questionable things which totally contradicted the stereotyped portrayal of him on the show.

BB7 was my very first series and I remember loving it from beginning to end, and I found Nikki and Richard to be hilarious (iirc the Shahbaz bullying still annoyed me but I managed to mostly forget about it). Nowdays I look back at it with a lot more negativity after rewatching some of the bullying, and in turn I view both Nikki and Richard's BB7 stints in a really bad light as opposed to liking them as I did in 2006.

I can only think of watching original series on and off when I was a kid and liking what the casual viewer liked. For example, I liked Anthony in BB6, Pete in BB7, Samanda in BB8 as the people I watched with were casual viewers like my mother and my school friends.
Now, I sit back and watch them all and have completely different opinions - loathe Anthony and Pete now and I watched and loved housemates I didn't even know existed at the time (like Derek),

The diversity was too forced, you could tell the HMs were only chosen to tick boxes, whereas the BB6/BB7 diversity was them being cast based on their diverse personalities.
But Noirin was the best thing to come out of BB10  She's the only reason I may rewatch BB10 at some point in the future.

That's a really interesting point you bring up. I think the diversity was too forced. Having said that, I also think the lack of diversity is also too forced in most Channel 5 seasons, and the opposite has happened. And having experienced that take place, I definitely prefer forced diversity over none of it. I remember one of the BB10 housemates telling me that once they told them their ethnicity, they were automatically skipped through the line and through to the next stage. I believe instead this happens now with the straight white model/z-lister types both male and female.
As you said, the best seasons are made when the best people are cast. And often enough, that ends up being a diverse cast. Through diverse casts, each person brings different values to the show bringing great discourse and entertaining television. It's just a shame Channel 5 don't seem to get that.

I disagree. Yes, it was very diverse, but they picked a range of interesting and unique characters.
14 minorities and only 8 straight white males/females. Just looked it up. Damn, BB10 really rocked it. Channel 5 could never!
And as people above have said, yes they were diverse ethnically and sexuality-wise but also very much so through personality. If production was better that year, it could've been a golden series I think.
The one problem I have with the BB10 cast is there were some people who quite clearly weren't mentally stable. Angel and Sree.

Arlie(BBCAN2) - I found this guy annoying on my first watch but I really love him after re-watching season 2. He's hilarious imo and someone who I would enjoy watching again.
Sabrina/Rachelle (BBCAN2) - I really disliked the gremlins because I found them high school mean girls but re-watching it, they redeemed themself and I actually liked them. Sabrina the most though.

1. Sree (BB10) - At the time I really hated him really bad, but when he went I realised that the show missed him, and that he wasn't as bad or as horrible as some of the Housemates that stuck around in that series.
2. Sunshine (BB11) - Again at the time I found her really irritating, but looking back on the series she was actually quite amusing, and her rivalry with Govan was really fun.
3. Corin (BB11) - I actually liked her at the time, but now I'm wondering why I actually did when all she really said was "I'm buzzing."
4. Ashleigh (BB15) - I liked her during the series, but when I looked back on the series I was thinking of what did she really do? And then it turned out that she didn't really do much other than look pretty.
5. Christopher (BB15) - I always found him a bit dodgy for some reason, like he was playing up to his awkward routine as it's an easy vote getter, but tbf to him he is just like what he was on BB on Twitter so fair play.
6. Kieran (BB16) - I always liked Kieran, but when he left in the 4In4Out twist I think it made me realise how important it is to have a normal person in the house with a chilled out attitude, because to me BB16 became a Soap Opera once he left and I've never been a fan of Reality Shows that are too overly dramatic (I'm looking at you BBCAN) so that's why I grew an even bigger appreciation for Kieran.
7. Jack (BB16) - When looking back on the series Jack was actually always a big character in the series, you saw his highs and lows, and both sides could actually make entertaining TV, he was probably the most three dimensional of his season which actually surprises me considering the role that BB initially cast him for, and his reaction to the Morgue is still gonna go down as one of my favourite moments in BB history.
8. Luke S (BB13) - I really didn't like him at the time, but looking back on his stint in the series he offered some great car crash TV, he grassed up the fact that his Showmance with Dobbie was fake, and he had the "why did you do this to me?" moment when Conor pushed the button to get £50K, then there was him giving us one of the most disgusting moments in BB history with licking Dobbie's black toe.
9. Aaron (BB12) - I liked him more at the time than I do now tbh, however I still stand by that he was the best of his series, but that's not saying much.
10. Jackie (BB14) - I strongly disliked her at the time (and still do now) however I appreciate that she gave more to the series than her Daughter did, and I feel that she just deserves more credit for her contribution to the series no matter how unlikable she was.
11. Dan (BB5) - When I was a lot younger he was actually my favourite in BB5 lol, but looking back he was just always trying to stop arguments which was really annoying, and also frustrating for the Housemates in the argument because how are they suppose to sort their issues out with each other if you've got Dan getting in the way stopping the flow of the argument?

It's not pretending she was boring, she WAS boring.
If she was in any shape or form a big character I would be defending her as I always defend the big characters, she just wasn't a big character.
The Forums normally support the big characters too so to see Rachel and Sara being ranked higher than the big characters in that series is deeply annoying.
