[Would you ******* believe it? A council has ******* banned swearing in public.
The council in question is Salford which has used a Public Space Protection Order
to tackle anti-social behaviour in the Salford Quays area which includes Media City
, home to the BBC, which might be just a coincidence. Part of the order says it will be deemed a
criminal offence if anyone is caught 'using foul and abusive language'. Public Space Protection Orders,
or PSPOs, are similar to ASBO's (anti-social behaviour orders)../......
If it is true that inconsiderate behaviour is increasing in our society, how should we deal with it?
How do we balance our moral obligation to the rest of society
with our desire to do what we **** well please? Chaired by Michael Buerk with Claire Fox,
Michael Portillo, Giles Fraser and Anne McElvoy.
Witnesses are Anna Minton, Alfie Moore,
Danny Kruger and Terry Christian.]
This was Debated last night on Radio 4

I have lived and still work in Salford and these so called "chavs" in Arista's pic are so few and far between - yeah you will see people like that but you'll see them anywhere. I am proud of being from Manchester and the diversity you will find there. Articles like this are so stereotypical.
I can understand it if its a bunch of yobs shouting and swearing. If its a quiet little get tae **** or similar, I can't see it being enforced. These Chavs can all just **** off

Is this you making a funny? You agree that swearing should be curbed and 'chav' behaviour modified so you cement argument by saying they can '**** off'?
I listened to the 'moral maze' and thought Terry Christian was very eloquent with his condemnation, he's a very articulate speaker. The whole concept is flawed, this was highlighted by those asked to give an opinion.

Sorry, it was my attempt at humour :joker:
I should add that I have an objection to gangs of aggressive and abusive youths that do shout and swear. I don't think the problem should be addressed by banning swearing however, its the aggressive behaviour that should be penalised

In this case "young" meaning under around 40... not "youth". You could use a picture of my next door neighbours as the definition of "chavs", and they're in their 30's

Let's just substitute the word 'chav' with the phrase 'anti-social behaviour', and the location 'Salford' for ALL the UK's towns and cities, and we are left with an irrefutable truth; that yobs are a growing problem in society, and it is a problem which needs addressing.
T.S. sums it up perfectly by using his 30-something neighbours as an example, and I have often noted how often it is that men in their 40's from all parts of the country, have been convicted of being 'football' thugs, so 'anti social behaviour' is not EXCLUSIVELY a problem caused by 'yoofs', though heavily DRUNKEN young people - male AND female - ARE without doubt, the biggest culprits.
How much of a problem 'anti social' behaviour is, depends upon one's own standards.
I am no paragon of virtue, and I can swear like the proverbial 'trooper', but do I want to take my wife and female friends into the town centre on a weekend night for a social drink, when drunken yobs are screaming and cursing and vomiting on pavements, with some males openly pissing in closed shop doorways, others exposing their arses and 'mooning' at their mates, and women lobbing out their breasts upon request?
Do I want to have to 'negotiate' my way through a crowd of ignorant bastards who are swigging from beer bottles outside the pubs and will NOT move when asked politely despite blocking off the pavements?
No I do not, and neither do my kids.
This is NOT a 'Salford' problem - it is nationwide, and it .
DOES need addressing

NOT A CHANCE.
Where such groups are concerned, the average P.C. - Police Constable - has his hands tied by P.C. - Political Correctness.
...sorry I have time atm to listen to the whole programme Arista but I don't think that I agree that people have a 'moral right to have public space protected' in all of the ways that are being suggested/the swearing...if they want to try to promote more positive behaviour though then it would seem that a more positive approach would be the thing, rather than silly unenforceable 'bannings'....

Its stereotyping and its a word that makes me cringe.
There have always been yobs on the street at night, at least during my lifetime. When I went out as a teen, there were always drunken girl gangs wanting to pick a fight with someone or someone spewing into a gutter or being kicked out of night clubs and there were always loud mouth drunks looking for trouble.

The British working class have become an object of fear and ridicule. From Little Britain's Vicky Pollard to the demonization of Jade Goody, media and politicians alike dismiss as feckless, criminalized and ignorant a vast, underprivileged swathe of society that has become stereotyped by one hate-filled word: chavs. Owen Jones explores how the working class has gone from 'salt of the earth' to 'scum of the earth'. Moving through Westminster's lobbies and working-class communities from Dagenham to Dewsbury Moor, Jones lays bare the ignorance and prejudice at the heart of the chav caricature, and reveals a far more complex reality: the increasing poverty and desperation of people left abandoned by the aspirational, society-fragmenting policies of both the Tories and New Labour.
Cavs is an illuminating, disturbing portrait of inequality and class hatred in modern Britain.
I've recommended this brilliant book to many a friend.

The thing about chavs though is that in reality they are not all from benefit families or working class families.Yes there are more of them on council estates but they're not solely from those areas. You do get the kids from more well off surrounding areas dressing and talking like chavs too.Back in my day "chavs" did'nt exist as a descriptor for thugs but "charva" and "chavvy" was used alot.I think it was when the southerners heard that word that they changed it to "chav".When i first heard it i thought it sounded ridiculous.
I think chavs as they are known today are actually classless. There are many a middle class chav.

In current usage here in Kent - primarily by teenagers as a term of abuse - as in "he's a right Chav." Describes someone who wears Reebok or Adidas trainers, gold jewellery and is likely to be a shop lifter. Girl Chavs wear big gold hoop earrings and like pop music (as opposed to rock, metal, grunge etc.) , Would be very interested to hear any feed back on this as this one word has made me feel like a very out of touch parent!! My daughter was bought an Adidas bag which she refused to use for fear of being called a "Chav". She then gave me the above description, and other teenagers I've asked have given the same with little variation.
However, my husband (Kent born and bred) says when he was young the term 'Chav' was used as an affectionate term for a younger boy - certainly not as an insult as it is used now. It would appear that even those teenagers who dress as described are deeply offended by the word.
