Batman: The Killing Joke is making history as the first-ever DC Animated Universe's R-rated movie.

The Bruce Timm-produced adaptation of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's gory one-shot comic is earning the restricted rating for its excessive violence.

Sam Register of Warner Bros told Entertainment Weekly: "The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations.

"We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience - the comics-loving community - with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well."

1988's graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke remains controversial for many to this date for its graphic violence and brutality on behalf of The Joker.

Batman the Animated Series legends Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reunite to voice the Dark Knight and The Joker respectively, while Tara Strong reprises her own pivotal character Barbara Gordon.

The Killing Joke is technically the second Batman movie to get an R rating, as the live-action Batman v Superman is receiving a restricted cut for home video.

:clap1:

I really like what DC is doing with the animated stuff although the attempts at a shared universe are a little bit hit and miss. Will be looking forward to this one.

I like the sound of an adult Animation story instead of it being aimed at kids all of the time.

Very few of DC's animated films are aimed at kids tbh.
