Dozens of holidaymakers abandoned their cars and started to walk towards Manchester Airport after police closed four lanes of the congested M56.
Officers blocked off part of the motorway for nearly three hours while responding to 'an incident on an over bridge' at Junction 4 yesterday evening, according to North West Motorway Police.
