Former world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali was close to death in a Phoenix-area hospital on Friday, a source close to the family said, as speculation swirled about his health.

Ali, one of the best-known figures of the 20th century, was hospitalized this week for a respiratory ailment. Family spokesman Bob Gunnell has said that Ali, 74, was in fair condition, but media reports have said he was in rapidly failing health.

Asked about Ali's condition, the source said: "It's extraordinarily grave. It's a matter of hours."

The source, who had spoken with Ali's wife, Lonnie, added: "It could be more than a couple of hours, but it's not going to be much more. Funeral arrangements are already being made."

Gunnell did not respond to repeated requests for comment about Ali's condition.

Ali has suffered from Parkinson's disease for more than three decades and has kept a low profile in recent years.

The Radar Online website reported on Friday that Ali had been placed on life support, citing "an insider."

The Reuters source close to the family could not comment on that report...

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali has died at the age of 74, a spokesman for his family has confirmed.

The three-time world heavyweight champion had suffered from Parkinson's disease since 1984 - three years after he retired from the sport.

In the days before his death, Ali had been admitted to hospital suffering from respiratory problems, with reports suggesting the breathing problems had been complicated by the neurological disorder.

A statement from spokesman Bob Gunnell said: "Muhammad Ali's funeral will take place in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Heartbreaking. He means so much to so many people, words won't even begin to describe. Rest easy, Champ.

....awww and that's so what his quote was as well 'but if I have changed even one life for the better', his belief of the meaning of life, I guess you could say..he didn't just say words, he lived his words, his words were so much who he was...and it's not just the words either that he spoke, that whole reply was so typical of him in that he always put so very much thought into what was said to him or asked of him...

I'm not going to be sorry for him. I'm going to be happy for him. He had an amazing life and lived for a long time. I would much rather celebrate someone's life than mourn their death.

30 BEST QUOTES FROM MUHAMMAD ALI - SPORT'S ORIGINAL TRASH TALKING, SELF-AGGRANDIZING MOTORMOUTH

t like a butterfly, Sting like a bee, your hands can't hit, what your eyes can't see.' - Prior to his fight against Foreman in 1974.
'If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it – then I can achieve it.'
'I'm not the greatest; I'm the double greatest. Not only do I knock 'em out, I pick the round.'
'It's hard to be humble, when you're as great as I am.'
'To make America the greatest is my goal, so I beat the Russian and I beat the Pole. And for the USA won the medal of gold. The Greeks said you're better than the Cassius of old.' - He said this quote after he won the Olympic light-heavyweight gold medal at the 1960 Games in Rome.
'It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up.'
'Live every day like it's your last because someday you're going to be right.'
'A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted thirty years of his life.'

'I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale, handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail; only last week I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick. I'm so mean I make medicine sick.' - Ali said this before the historic Rumble in the Jungle match that took place in 1974 in Zaire against George Foreman.
'I am so fast that last night I turned off the light switch and was in bed before the room was dark.'

'Boxing is a lot of white men watching two black men beating each other up.'
'Cassius Clay is a slave name. I didn't choose it, and I didn't want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free name, and I insist people using it when speaking to me and of me.'

'It will be a killer and a chiller and a thriller when I get the gorilla in Manila.' - Ali said this before the historic and legendary 'Thrilla in Manila' match against Joe Frazier in 1975.

'I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'
'Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.'

'There are no pleasures in a fight, but some of my fights have been a pleasure to win.'

'I am the greatest, I'm the greatest that ever lived. I don't have a mark on my face.' - Ali said this after he beat competitor Sonny Liston in 1964.
'Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.'

'Don't count the days; make the days count.'
'It's not bragging if you can back it up.'
'Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.' - Ali said this prior to a fight against George Foreman in 1974.
'At home I am a nice guy: but I don't want the world to know. Humble people, I've found, don't get very far.'

'If you even dream of beating me, you better wake up and apologize.'
'My way of joking is to tell the truth. That's the funniest joke in the world.'
'I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky, my name not yours. My religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.' - Ali said this in 1970 when he was convicted of draft evasion.

'The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses—behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.'
'He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.'
'It's lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself.'

You should have some sort of shock with someone this famous dying, but I wasn't the slightest bit shocked. Maybe because he's had a terrible disease for year's and yesterday I heard he was in a bad way.

Victoria Wood is still the only famous death this year that shocked me, because that one came way out of left field.

RIP "The Greatest"

Truth poem by the greatest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USkZ6HvH4iI
The face of truth is open,
The eyes of truth are bright,
The lips of truth are ever closed,
The head of truth is upright.
The breast of truth stands forward,
The gaze of truth is straight,
Truth has neither fear nor doubt,
Truth has patience to wait.
The words of truth are touching,
The voice of truth is deep,
The law of truth is simple:
All that you sow you reap.
The soul of truth is flaming,
The heart of truth is warm,
The mind of truth is clear,
And firm through rain or storm.
Facts are but its shadows,
Truth stands above all sin;
Great be the battle in life,
Truth in the end shall win.
The image of truth is Christ,
Wisdom's message its rod;
Sign of truth is the cross,
Soul of truth is God.
Life of truth is eternal,
Immortal is its past,
Power of truth will endure,
Truth shall hold to the last
