Caroline Aherne, the award-winning actor and comedian, has died at the age of 52 after a suffering from cancer, her publicist has said.

Aherne, who co-wrote, directed and starred in The Royle Family, revealed two years ago she had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer in her home city of Manchester. She was born with a rare form of retina cancer and later received treatment for bladder cancer.

“Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away after a brave battle with cancer,” her publicist Neil Redding said in a statement.

“The Bafta award-winning writer and comedy actor died earlier today at her home in Timperley, Greater Manchester. She was 52. The family ask for privacy at this very sad time.”

Aherne created some of British comedy’s best-loved characters: the terminally lazy daughter Denise in The Royle Family, acerbic chat show host Mrs Merton, and memorable Fast Show characters such as Poula Fisch, TV weather girl in an unnamed country where the sun is always ‘scorchio!’

The daughter of Irish immigrants Bert and Maureen, Aherne grew up on a council estate in Wythenshawe, Manchester, and her first job was answering phones at BBC offices in the city.

Both Aherne and her older brother Patrick were born with the rare form of retina cancer which she was treated for into her 20s. She then underwent treatment for bladder cancer, the same disease that later took the life of her boyfriend Matt Bower in 1997.

Aherne, who had been a smoker, also spoke of her battles with depression and alcohol, following the breakdown of her marriage to musician Peter Hook, the death of her father, and struggles with fame. She spent time at the Priory clinic before moving to Australia to escape the public eye.

She made her return to TV in 2014 as the narrator of popular Channel 4 show Gogglebox. She was forced to take time off from narrating the show earlier this year while she received treatment for the disease.

Very sad. :(

I read that she'd had 4 different cancers throughout her life. It's so unfair that some people get so much crap heaped onto them but she was clearly a fighter.

Comedian Caroline Aherne, who wrote and appeared in sitcom The Royle Family, has died at the age of 52.

Aherne, who also starred in Mrs Merton, had suffered from cancer, her publicist said.

The actress said two years ago that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer, having previously had bladder and eye cancer.

Aherne was also the narrator of Gogglebox and appeared in The Fast Show.

Her publicist Neil Reading said on Saturday: "Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away, after a brave battle with cancer.

Really genuinely upset about this, I loved everything she did, she was so talented and I have been watching a lot of the royle family recently so it just doesn't seem right, the most recent episode I watched was on her wedding day and that emotional scene between her and Jim! So that's made that a hell of a lot more touching!

A huge shock and a sad loss. I always found Caroline immensely attractive for some reason.

52 is just too young to be taken by this most terrible of all diseases. The sooner a cure is found the better.

RIP.

She wouldn't want that, she made it fo people to enjoy forever.

It's always sad when someone you enjoy watching or find funny dies . But after awhile you just continue watching these shows as it makes you happy ,I still watch repeats of vicar of Dibley after the actress who played Alice sadly died . As these TV shows are there for you to remember them and enjoy their work

I've never been a big royal family fan, only seen the odd episode/clip .

But I use to watch Mrs Merton & Malcolm ,and she was convincing as a quirky OAP :joker: , the humor with her husband always laid in bed poorly not showing his face and never speaking was always strange and funny as well.
