Most pets keep you up to an extent, but if anything a hamster does so less I'd have thought.
And Betty's a really sweet name for a hamster.

We had some trauma with Betty
She was squeaking like mad (does anyone know what this means?) and her wheel wasnt going round because of all the bedding she had put in it, so we had to try get her out of the wheel to fix it, but she wouldnt budge.
So we had to lure her into her ball (first time she'd been in) and my mum wanted to try letting her out on her own (big mistake) she kept sqeaking and it was really scary. We are gonna let her get used to our smells etc before we try again.
Question to hamster owners:
-How long before you should pick the hamster up?
- When do you know its right?
- What does the squeaking mean?
Emilee
08-02-2007, 08:43 PM
I sont know i think it just means shes scared. By hamster used ot squeek all the time. Betty it really cute btw.
Chrizzle
08-02-2007, 08:44 PM
Shes happy on her wheel again, exploring etc but it was really scary.
It probably does mean shes scared. I don't want to scare her.

Aww sorry youv'e had a little trouble with Betty, Chris.
My advice to you would be..
>Talk to her (she can then recognise your voice)
>Try and see if she feeds from your hand, if she does she trusts you
>Don't try to maul her, becuase she will get into the habbit of biting you
>Bond with her now, it's easier when the hamster is young
Crystal-Rose
09-02-2007, 01:24 PM
i had to leave my hampster in its cage for a few days after i first got him so that he could get used to it. the first time you pick them up they get really scared and squeak but dont worry once betty gets used to you picking her up she will be fine.

Have you thought of the honery roles yet Chris?
I'm godmother:bigsmile:
I've had a few hamsters before.
One of them escaped and was missing for like a week, then it just turned up one day covered in dust.
Another one we had kept escaping from its cage, we had to put a clip over the opening.
And some little girl killed one of them, she tried to squeeze it into a plastic bottle.

Thanks for the advice Soph. I'll try that feeding thing tonight. She has eaten a Choc Drop from my Mums hand on the first night.

I tried what you said Sophie- about eating out of the hands!
I kept dropping the food. But the second time she came close and was about to take it when I dropped the sunflower seed.
I think shes slowly starting to trust me. I get scared she'll bite me, but I know your not allowed to show the fear.
She trusts my Mum a lot, as my Mum always rests her hand in the cage and Betty just sniffs and has no problem.

Don't worry, she isn't going to bite you!
If you feel scared, she feels scared.
With the food just put a load on your hand, put your hand into the cage, she will sniff you, but she just want to know who you are!

You need to start holding her Chris.
The best time to bond with a hamster is when the hamster is little. If you leave it until she's older, she'll bite you.
Chrizzle
10-03-2007, 03:07 PM

Shes either to hyper or to squirmy.
I think im trying tomorrow.
Sophii3x
10-03-2007, 04:04 PM
Aww. I held my hamsters 2 days after getting them!
You must be dying to hold her.
Just relax, if you don't feel scared, then she won't feel scared.
Chrizzle
10-03-2007, 04:05 PM
Her body is so fragile, Im scared ill hurt her
To be honest Im not frustrated. I just love to watch her and stroke her. Though, I'd love to hold her of course.
Sophii3x
10-03-2007, 04:21 PM
You may think that she's all fragile because she's soo small, but if you hold her carefully she'll be fine!
Hamsters do feel all gooey though and you can feel their insides and stuff.
So my advice to you is to hold her ASAP so she can bond with you properly now she's young, because if you leave it until she's older she won't trust you and she'll bite you.
