View Full Version : Uni in 2 weeks
Got results this morning! Got into my top choice which I'm so happy about. It's just so real now! Like I'm excited for this new adventure and moving away isn't an issue cos I've been away from home at school for years, but it is daunting!
So much to do in so little time :worry:

Congrats! Bet you were so thrilled getting a place!
I had a gap year after college, then did a foundation year at Keele last year, now I'm starting my 1st year at Manchester on the 19th, and I turn 21 on the 20th. I hope people don't think I'm old. I'm not doing freshers week, I might go out once. I haven't drunk since december, I basically embarassed myself by crying endlessly for 3 hours at a deafening level.
....awwww, well done TomC....I'm so pleased that you got the results that you wanted and hoped for and enjoy every moment of the excitement of going...first steps in creating so many new and lovely friendships...

I genuinely wish you luck Tom, and hope that you thoroughly enjoy Uni and gain ALL the success you set out to secure.
The MAIN thing is to remember, is that Old Father Time creeps up on us all faster than the speed of light, and so it is so important to LIVE and ENJOY every single minute of life - whatever we are doing.
I am sure that you WILL enjoy Uni, and that you WILL make many new friends, and that you WILL succeed.
Good Luck.

Make sure you get this jab for meningitis which started being given out last year. It is routinely given to 14 year olds in school now with their booster jabs but anyone who left school in the last few years can get it from their GP
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/aug/03/teenagers-first-year-students-advised-new-meningitis-vaccine
Our GP didn't routinely invite us :idc:
Been here for just about a week now! I certainly didn't expect the first week to be such an emotional roller coaster. Like I was at boarding school for 6 years, but being in a new town with new people has reintroduced me to homesickness.
I have really enjoyed many parts of this week - meeting new people and (most of) the nights out have been great. But I still feel uneasy. Not just cos of missing home and stuff, but I feel as though I've met a disproportionate amount of girls compared to boys?
Now I really have enjoyed a lot of this week, it's just not been quite as good as I expected.
Just needed to get this off my chest!
Greg!

Why does that make you feel uneasy? Girlies are far better than lads in me humble opinion!
Glad you've had quite a good time tho and I hope your homesickness gets better :)

It's really weird because I never started feeling home sick until around November ish.

Idk like tbh at home I had more girl than guy friends but like it's still nice to have some. There aren't many guys around me tbh, like I have one male flat mate and one next door.
Yeah I hope it does too haha.

Judging by previous experiences, I feel like once I adjust here I'll be fine.

It's really early stages, you'll have enough time to get to know the people around, love them and hate them.
After a while all the first excitement and homesickness will sink, and that's when you can start measuring this experience.
There will be ups and downs like in any other fresh start, but it will be OK, and it's part of the way.
It's great that you're already having a good time, I hope it stays like that

Thanks so much for your advice :) I totally agree, I am trying to just get through the hard parts (which are literally just the times when I have little to do and start thinking about home), and am just hoping once I get through them, I can fully have a blast haha. But yeah, this is just so reminiscent to starting boarding school tbh (although I am actually enjoying a decent amount of this, and am not bursting into tears every few hours)

Seems like we're complete opposites lol like I just get on with new situations and seem to be coping pretty well but later on down the line I just realise where I am and I panick a bit.

Yeah I'm more of an analyser and get my issues done early
..I think as well, Tom...that if you have associations with boarding school and feeling home-sickness there and maybe some very unhappy times, etc...?..that without realising it, your emotions could have 'braced themselves' for similar here/at uni...that sub-conscious worrying of really not wanting to feel those things again etc but thinking that you might do....it's like our biggest fears, isn't it...so that in itself would create an uneasy feeling ..but what you're finding out though is that there isn't anything much to be feeling uneasy about and that those negative associations are now being replaced with positives..(hopefully..)...you're not bursting into tears, you are enjoying a decent amount of it etc and that will grow and grow and grow more and more and replace those negative associations that you've probably felt tense about, you know..?......

I think no matter where you are in the world, you're gonna have some great times and some ****ty times overall. I can't speak from experience re: uni but it's obviously a majorly different environment to what you're used to so it's probably gonna take some time to completely adjust to the lifestyle, but I'm sure that it will all be worth it in the end.
Ok I really enjoyed tonight, it wasn't too wild/late, but I spent it with some really lovely people!!

...awwww, that's really nice to hear, Tom....I do think from what you've said that it seems mostly positive so far but maybe you just need to shake off those negative associations of homesickness that you felt at boarding school and worrying that it would be the same at uni/and thinking uh uh, hang on, should I worry about this and that etc...but so far, it doesn't seem to be, eh...great news......
...sadly, it's the things that have caused us the most emotional pain in the past that tend to rule us and our worries and fears more than the happier times and feelings...

It's great isn't it! Abd trust me it gets so much better as the year goes on. Like once you've made good friends.
I've been so bummed this weekend cos I've wanted to try dating for soo long now (I only kind of came out quite recently) and some guy really fancied me but I just felt nothing towards him. Typical!

I'm glad you're settling in and having a blast.

But I'm a mess with dating like I never realise when someone is coming on to me until days after it happened. Like I was in the smoking area of a club once and the guy I was talking to (whom I liked) was like rubbing my leg and stuff and I didn't get the hint lol.

In terms of friends, for me, I made friends in the first couple of weeks based on where we would walk after uni. I made a friend because we both walked to the train station and it just builds from there. There's a group of five of us who have been friends since the very start.

I met a few people first week but I didn't really talk any of my friends now until second week and they were the people on my course. But yeah I did continue to make new friends as the year went on. Most of my good friends now I met after Christmas.
