A thread to discuss all the build up over the next 4 years for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

The 2020 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad[2] (French: Jeux de la XXXIIe olympiade; Japanese: 第三十二回オリンピック競技大会; Hepburn: Dai Sanjūni-kai Orinpikku Kyōgi Taikai) and commonly known as Tokyo 2020, is a major international multi-sport event due to be celebrated in the tradition of the Olympic Games as governed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The games are planned to be held from 24 July to 9 August 2020 in Tokyo. The city was announced as the host at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on 7 September 2013.

Lmao.

It's not really for 4 years in advance, more like the news and stuff up to Summer 2020, like the olympic park constructions etc.

And I expect there be a lot of announcements due their being lots of new and innovative things taking place at the games.

This would be amazing:

Japan may open 2020 Olympics with a man-made meteor shower

The Olympics opening ceremony is an opportunity for all nations to come together and celebrate the spirit of competition. Or at least that’s what they’d like you to think. It’s really a chance for the host nation to totally show off with extravagant displays that often cost millions of dollars. Japan might be taking things to a new level when the 2020 Olympics kick off in Tokyo by creating a man-made meteor shower.

A Japanese company called ALE Co is bidding to handle the pyrotechnics at the opening ceremony, and the key to its pitch is that it isn’t just planning on using fireworks like everyone else, it wants to fill the sky with hundreds of colorful shooting stars. If it gets the nod, this display would be visible from far outside Tokyo, up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. A meteor of such high apparent brightness would be potentially dangerous, but the company says that’s not a concern with its chemical payload.

Well even the Japanese haven't escaped the usual Olympic woes.
The original stadium design scrapped for something cheaper and less impressive.
The total cost of games vastly over budget
Long distance events like marathon and walk moved from Tokyo to Sapporo amid controversy

I gave up on bothering too much about the Olympics after Ben Johnson . I’ve never taken it seriously since .... then after it came out after one year that 7 out of the 8 in the final had tested positive meaning the 8th place guy was ‘eventually’ awarded the gold !?!?

I will watch the women’s beachball though ;)

It could happen.

Meaning Tokyo Olympics being cancelled, not the Olympics as a whole.

of course, and this will also leave a stain on Japan's hosting skills, IOC probably not accepting any future host bids from them for a while too

Japanese government also could've done more to slow down spread of the virus, tbh comparing asian countries how they cope with the virus, Japan is up there with China as worst affected asian countries i think

they should've looked more into South-Korea approach but if you don't have same financial resources to afford enough testkits, ICU's, ok not much they could've done

but yeah we'll see next year, i don't think anyone can say how the crisis will look like then

opening and closing ceremonies make good tv for me personally

and tbh i might be biased but our dutch olympic team is usually quite good at certain events Swimming we have Kromowidjojo and for the open water (her now boyfriend) Ferry Weertman

athletics of course Dafne Schippers, Sifan Hassan

Hockey we are usually very good at, both men and women

and i also like Paralympics, athletics mostly because of ''blade babe'' Marlou van Rhijn  and we had a ace in wheelchair tennis too, Esther Vergeer (whom now is in our olympic selection committee)

Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard to compete for New Zealand in the super-heavyweight category at Tokyo Olympics; she will become first transgender athlete to compete at the Games; "I am grateful and humbled by the kindness and support that has been given to me," Hubbard said

Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard will become the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics after being selected by New Zealand for the women's event at the Tokyo Games.

Hubbard will compete in the super-heavyweight category, her selection made possible by updated qualifying requirements.

The 43-year-old, who will be the oldest lifter at the Games, had competed in men's weightlifting competitions - although not at international level - before transitioning nearly 10 years ago.

When she competed as a man she lifted 185 kilos

the bench mark for top female weightlifters is 87 kilos

so just give her the gold already

All you need to hear in that article to know how unfair it is, is "the 43 year old"

i'm excited for this, hope the opening ceremony will again be a entertaining show too

i don't care about no audiences since i never pay attention to those, just the sports, and at least now no distractions for the athletes, since those audiences cannot shut up sometimes when athletes need to concentrate :idc:

i'm interested in Athletics, Hockey, Handball (even though it is without our babe Estevana Polman sadly) Football (since our women are quite good, and some chances at a medal, i'm not saying gold as USA is probably/likely taking that one, but we got a superstar too Lieke Martens)

Swimming maybe with Kromowidjojo, and Van Rouwendaal (especially at open water, which Sharon is amazing at) and maybe Femke Heemskerk who might surprise considering it might be her last chance at some olympic medals

Equastrian idk our chances, but i'll watch for The Boss's daughter Jessica Springsteen, whom trains in my nation, at TOPS in Valkenswaard, love how she will make her olympic debut at show jumping, she is in a good team too btw with quite some olympic veterans

Two South Africa footballers have become the first competitors to test positive for coronavirus in the athletes' village in Tokyo - five days before the start of the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, six athletes and two staff members from Team GB's athletics team are self-isolating after being identified as close contacts of an individual who tested positive on their flight to Japan on 16 July.

South Africa's Football Association confirmed Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi as their positive cases.

The South Africa football team's video analyst Mario Masha also tested positive on Saturday and the team is in quarantine pending more test results.

Another athlete from outside the village tested positive on Sunday too.
