TiBB's Halloween Countdown 2016
If you're unsure how this works, please see last year's thread HERE (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/forums/topic-287968-tibbs-halloween-countdown--night-1---scream-1996-_tech-movies-amp-video-games.htm).
From 1st October on wards, we watch a different horror film and write a review in the run up to 31st October - Halloween. We score the movie out of 10 and at the end a rank down is completed on the films we watched based on the scores collected overall from all reviewers participating.
However, things will be different this year as instead of watching a new film every night, we'll be watching two films a week in the run up to Halloween starting from Saturday 1st October to Monday 31st October. The schedule will run as follows:
Saturday 1st October - The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
Wednesday 5th October- The Shining (1980)
Saturday 8th October- Carrie (1976)
Wednesday 12th October - Cherry Falls (2000)
Saturday 15th October - Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Wednesday 19th October - Trick R Treat (2007)
Saturday 22nd October- You're Next (2011)
Wednesday 26th October- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
Sunday 30th October- Halloween (1978)
This is due to a lack of commitment from the reviewers last year due to demand to review a film every night being too much. In total we will be watching 9 films throughout the course of October, every Saturday and Wednesday with the exception of the Sunday 30th October which will be the final film.
Please respond in this thread if you'd like to be a reviewer, as well as suggesting films we can watch throughout October 2016 (preferably films we didn't watch last year).
SUGGESTIONS WILL BE OPEN UNTIL FRIDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER. A POLL WILL THEN BE OPENED AND THE SUGGESTIONS WITH THE MOST VOTES WILL MAKE THE FINAL 9.
Reviewers: Cal, Will, Luke, Lostie, Jamie, Jason, Amy Jade, Marc, Dezzy, Jake

Are you reviewing this year?
Jamie89
26-08-2016, 07:36 PM
If I can only pick one by the way it'd be 'Shining'
You can suggest as many as you want. They'll be a poll round to decide the top 9.
Natalie.
26-08-2016, 07:40 PM
I suggest Hush (2016)
Jason.
26-08-2016, 07:41 PM
Here for this. I'm in.
Jason.
26-08-2016, 07:42 PM
We should have the first Final Destination (we had 3 last year and the first one is better imo)
I'll put it in the suggestions (and I've added yours Natalie)
Jason.
26-08-2016, 07:43 PM
I'd like to be a reviewer too please, and I'll suggest 'The Shining' and 'Poltergeist' (the 1982 one).
Yes! Can't wait for this, one of my all time favourites
Yeah I agree with all of these. Good taste. :clap1:
I prefer older films as opposed to recent horror which sucks.
The original Carrie btw not the crappy remake lmao.
LukeB
26-08-2016, 07:43 PM
Also, The Crazies
Jason.
26-08-2016, 07:44 PM
Halloween and Halloween 2 double feature on October 30th like last year is a must!
I've added Cherry Falls to the suggestions as I doubt I'm ever going to get around to watching it otherwise.
Jason.
26-08-2016, 07:46 PM

We should have the first Final Destination (we had 3 last year and the first one is better imo)
FD1 is the best (of the 3 I've seen) :clap1:
I preferred 3. They're all good besides 4 though.
~BUT LETS NOT gET OFF TOPIC~
Jason.
26-08-2016, 07:48 PM
The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan?
Jason.
26-08-2016, 07:51 PM
The People Under the Stairs
Did we have Childs Play last year?
I can't remember reviewing it. Let me check.
Lostie!
26-08-2016, 07:59 PM
Oh, Trick 'r Treat!!! It's honestly the perfect film to watch near Halloween :flutter:
Jason.
26-08-2016, 08:00 PM
Oh yeah I forgot about that ^
Another anthology, Creepshow?
We didn't watch Child's Play.
We did watch The Crazies, Halloween and Halloween II but if the demand is there for them again it's fine.
Jason.
26-08-2016, 08:05 PM

26-08-2016, 08:10 PM
Yeah I agree with all of these. Good taste. :clap1:
I prefer older films as opposed to recent horror which sucks.
The original Carrie btw not the crappy remake lmao.
I was going to suggest Attack The Block too and thought of you  (but I'm still planning to watch that soon so I don't want to watch it again in October!) But yeah I love older horror films, there's something more eerie about them, mostly. They probably just seem grittier because of the lower quality filming lol, but new ones that are glossy and shiny don't usually have the same appeal to me.
Lostie!

28 Days Later and The Mist are musts!
These suggestions :amazed: :clap1: The Cube especially is an absolute classic imo!
The Mist though, I love it and it's a great film and everything but...
it has to be one of the saddest endings of any film I've ever seen, I don't know if I can go through that turmoil again :bawling:
(not a massive spoiler btw but probably avoid it anyway if you haven't watched it before)
Babayaro.
27-08-2016, 08:39 AM
The first time I watched it, I was honestly so shook by the ending. I kind of love it now though :/

I'd recommend Hush, it's rather good. I'll also be a reviewer. I couldn't commit to one film a day but two a week should be fine.

Yeah I agree. The grittier feel adds to the atmosphere of the films. It's like when you watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it just feels so much different than the remakes or recent films because it has that gritty/dirty feel to it which contributes to the creepiness of the film. I love it.
Hush was already suggested Dezzy, and I'll add you in as a reviewer
Niamh.
29-08-2016, 01:56 PM
The Blair Witch Project
I can't understand how people thought this was good/scary
Drew.
29-08-2016, 01:57 PM
I'd be up for this, been watching horror movies more regularly recently
If we're suggesting any horror movies then The Others (2001), Wolf Creek (2005), The Orphanage (2007), The Hills Have Eyes (2006) & The Texas Chainsaw massacre (2003) are all great
Lostie!
29-08-2016, 01:59 PM

I would have but I don't think I'll be able to commit! I'm gonna be buried with uni work this semester so might not have the time! :(

I'm not sure how well these fit in with the theme since they're probably more comedy than horror, but "Death Becomes Her" and The Rocky Horror Picture Show" if they're allowed :hee:
What does everyone think re: Jamie's suggestions?
Babayaro.
31-08-2016, 04:45 PM
Add them to the poll, I don't mind lol. Personally I wouldn't vote for them though
Jason.
31-08-2016, 05:26 PM
No non-horrors!
But you can add them to the poll.
Jamie89
31-08-2016, 05:42 PM

I think Rocky Horror counts just fine, campy comedy horror is still horror (and it's such a fun movie :hee:)

If I was to recommend some films
Society (1989) as its brilliant wired and over the top
Night of the Living Dead 1990 version. I actually think it surpasses the orignal and is the best in the dead series.
Day of the Dead as out of Night, Dawn and Day I think its over looked, it has a creepy and dark theme to it, and the isolation to the story makes it great. Plus its gory like Dawn.
Jake.
13-09-2016, 10:27 AM
I'd love to do this

Are you reviewing this year Dollface?
yes count me in!
Sorry about the delay I've been busy all weekend and only just got the chance to get on the laptop, but suggestions have now closed!
It's now time to choose YOUR top 9 and the films we will be watching over the course of October.
Due to a LARGE amount of suggestions made, I've had to throw the poll idea out so we'll now decide our Top 9 by a ranking game.
I'd love it if every reviewer could PM me a list of their Top 9 films from the list below (BY FRIDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER) and then the 9 films with the most votes will become the films that we watch.
I'm expecting a Top 9 from the following people: Will, Luke, Lostie, Natalie, Jamie, Jason, Amy Jade, Tom, Marc, Daniel-X, Dezzy, Drew, Jake, Dollface

I think so, tbh I kinda went through a phase where I watched a lot of Italian giallo films I am not sure which ones I seen. I blame zone horror they did like a season of them a couple of years back.
I might give it a rewatch to remind me as reading the plot to it I dont recall watching it, yet according to imdb I watched it at the end of 2010 when they did the season.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - 9/10
The Hills Have Eyes has always terrified me since it was released. It's really disturbing, graphic and gory but it actually tells a story and delivers well developed characters that I care about which sets it apart from other films like it. I think it's one of the only remakes that's actually quite decent. It's amazingly written and the soundtrack is terrifying to me. The way the film is shot is also frightening and everything about it is executed perfectly. The mutants are absolutely terrifying. I really felt for the Carters and THAT sequence in the trailer is probably one of the most brutal sequences of events in any film I've ever seen. Vinessa Shaw's character Lynn is one of my favourites in horror and her death is honestly tragic. The journey the surviving characters go on is amazing and doesn't feel forced. The film feels a bit slow at first but when it gets going it really gets going. The climax is absolutely fantastic and really pays off. The only reason this film doesn't get 10/10 is because of some of the slow parts and because of the rape scene (sorry I really don't like it). But yes, an amazing film, really well made and I'm really glad it made the list for Vinessa Shaw alone :clap1:

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - 7/10
I did enjoy the movie but not until around the rape scene where the father got burned to death,Lynn got murdered and the mother got shot but I did find the rape scene a bit uncomfortable to watch but the scenes after that were amazing. It was a really slow start that I did consider turning off at one point. The characters were okay and beast  I loved that dog, talking of dogs I didn't appreciate seeing the other dog dead on the floor. I do applaud how disturbing and graphic this movie is which made it into a good horror movie.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - 9/10
Love this film! Everything about it is near perfection and the characters are relatable and well thought out. Some people might complain about the slow build up, but I, who doesn't even think it's that slow tbh, found it really helps set the tone of the movie. The 'attack' scene is still pretty uncomfortable to watch after seeing it so many times, but i'm glad the director never held back as it really allows the viewer to feel the same sort of terror as the Carter's (and Doug lol). Speaking of Doug, I genuinely believe he's one of the most underrated characters in the horror genre. His story arc is great. On a side note, the scene where Big Bob gets attacked is so chilling. "Daddy" :worry: :worry: :worry:

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
The first time I ever watched The Hills Have Eyes I was home alone. I do that quite a lot to try and scare myself and it rarely happens - I pretty much grew up watching horror because my cousins are order than me and I spent a lot of my weekends at their house.
For me The Hills Have Eyes is one of the best remakes of all time, very rarely do I feel the original movies are surpassed but Alexandre Aja (who I think is one of the best horror directors around) really did something special with THHE.
I loved the subtle build up after the intense intro, the scenes such as Lynne finding jewellery in the gas station and spotting something shiny in the surrounding hills keep the viewer on edge just enough to let you enjoy getting to know the characters but not letting your guard down.
The trailer home invasion is brutal and I am so glad the director kept it that way and didn't dumb it down to get a lower certificate to allow the teen audience in like a few movies were doing around the time.
I found Aaron Stanford and Vinessa Shaw to be the stand out performances here along with a dementedly brilliant turn by Robert Joy as Lizard. My only slight complaint would be that Dan Byrd as Bobby is slightly irritating at times. Another scene connected that I liked was Doug comforting a dying Ethel, I had a lump in my throat during the scene and felt the acting was on top form.
The scenes of Doug going to find Catherine were way more graphic than I expected and I thought the sets of the abandoned testing houses were especially great and I loved how you honestly were rooting for Doug, in some movies I find that you can start to root for the bad guy because the victims are so stupid it gets hard to care for them. I was especially glad to see Beast get revenge for Beauty - I suspect most viewers were happy to see him snarling and ready to pounce Big Brain.
Simply put I think the movie is amazing and essentially I cant think of one thing I would change (well maybe Beauty and Lynne surviving but that'd ruin a few things I love about the movie) so I rate The Hills Have Eyes very highly.
10/10
Drew.

Hills Have Eyes 2006 10/10
Really glad everyone seems to be enjoying this
This movie brings back so many memories. It was the first horror movie I owned and one of the first horrors I ever watched. It's probably one of my favourite horror movies too. I've always found the horror movies I watched at a young age have gone on to haunt me and scare me more than any horror movie I watch now. Watched this for the first time on DVD when it first came out about 10 years ago and I hid behind a magazine for most of it. Said to my mum last night I couldn't remember why it was 18 rated before it started but now I can remember why.
It's a pretty unique horror movie, can't think of many other films I could compare it to. The characters are great and the fear they showed throughout was really well acted. It has the perfect mix of graphic scenes, gore and suspense. The mutants themselves are freaky as ****, I know he played a minor role but the one that was dragging the body in their town with the neck brace thing on is the one that haunts me the most and those two mutant kids asking Doug to play with them was one of the most haunting scenes. Think there might be one or two movies that could rival this but overall I think this could be hard to top.

The Hills Have Eyes 9/10
Such a great film, one of favourites I've watched in recent years. It's really graphical and very entertaining throughout, the whole setting and feel to the film is brilliant. Some of the scenes are really gory and it does scare me sometimes, they really are disturbing. The build really helps the film and works well, I didn't really get bored of it. The scenes with Doug are really haunting and It makes you root for him so much, I loved the testing houses, really creepy. The characters are really good and they did a great job with them. Overall a fantastic movie, really enjoyed it.

The Hills Have Eyes
I'm just going to admit it - I think this is probably the first time I've actually watched this film in full? I've seen various scenes on TV years ago but I've never actually sat down and watched it properly. The only thing I remembered was that it had Claire from Lost in it. Now having seen it, I absolutely loved it. God knows why I've been holding it back for so long but it's definitely one of my favourite horror remakes, even though I've yet to see Wes Craven's original. Alexandre Aja did an amazing job with this as he did with High Tension and I also learnt that Wes Craven returned for the remake as producer which I'm sure contributes to how great of a remake this is.
I don't really mind slow burners as long as they serve a purpose and this film does exactly that. Similar to Wolf Creek, I think it sets the tone for the film and makes room for some character development as it allows us to get to know the characters before they eventually get picked off. I only found the first ten minutes boring but even then we weren't introduced to any of the characters at that point so that doesn't really bother me. Speaking of which, one of the reasons this film is so good is because of its characters. I liked pretty much the whole main cast and I even found myself feeling sorry for the character's when they were getting their demise, particularly Lynn and Ethel. Doug's character was brilliant and Aaron Stanford did a good job playing him. I love how gripping the film was and how you were actively rooting for Doug at the end whilst at the edge of your seat at the same time and the ending makes it all the more satisfying. Him and Lynn are my two favourite characters even though I liked them all. Bobby was quite annoying at times but nevertheless I still appreciated him.
For a film that takes place mostly in the daytime as opposed to the night, I love how suspenseful and tense it is. It doesn't need to rely too much on the death scenes in order to be creepy and suspenseful - it just is. Although my favourite scene in the film would probably have to be the trailer attack during the night, the combination of the sheer brutality and sadism coupled with your empathy for the Carter's makes it an all in all strong scene for me, although the rape scene was uneasy viewing. I think the part that sticks out the most for me is after when Doug finds his wife's lifeless body bleeding out and then watching her mother die moments later. (</3)
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It has a good plot, good acting and a really good atmosphere. It's like Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Wolf Creek meets Wrong Turn. Like I said at the beginning of the review, god knows why I've been holding this one back so long but I will definitely be checking this one out again. I'm going to watch the Original too.

I thought she was going to be the final girl tbh. She had that final girl feel about her character so I wasn't expecting her to die and I was surprised she did and Brenda didn't. But then again I like that it's not so predictable with who's going to live. I even thought Doug would be amongst the first ones to die.

I had seen the original so had a feeling Lynne was going to die in the trailer but Vinessa sold her enough that I second guessed those thoughts - in the original she's not at the center of the action as much and you don't warm to her like you do in the remake.
Another thing vastly superior to the original are the cannibals, the original ones weren't even scary they looked like cast offs from Mad Max and Ruby was gorgeous which was odd considering she's meant to be inbred.

The Hills Have Eyes - Passable but forgettable. I didn't hate it but I wouldn't watch it again.

I'd do a fuller review but I'm knackered.
