In a statement Black Lives Matter UK said that activists carried out the demonstration "in order to highlight the UK's environmental impact on the lives of black people".

Similar to truckers and such disrupting Calais yesterday as they are against the refugee camp. Surprised you didn't open a thread about that. But anyways, I suppose protesters with a cause like to take drastic measures to be heard.

I come from a spit away from London City Airport and lived there until I moved here. I could see the airport from my bedroom window. I'm pretty sure that there are some white people left living there.

Hey Alex, nice to see you.

hey Liv, hope you are doing well, always a pleasure to see you too. :waves:

Well i'm glad they aren't having to protest over any actual violence. wasn't there a guy on celeb big brother, a police chief or something who was involved with showing the racial profiling in policing in london? a gay guy if i remember, that was years ago though.

[Flights in and out of the
airport have been disrupted
since 5.40am when
nine protesters stormed
the grounds and lay down
in the middle of the tarmac,
chained to a tripod (inset and left),
to 'highlight the UK's
environmental impact
on the lives of black people'.
In a series of claims about
the protest, the group
said black people are '28 per
cent more likely to be suffer
air pollution' and that
the airport was
allowing a 'wealthy elite' to fly
around the world while migrants
are drowning in the Mediterranean.
Despite the serious security breach,
police (top right) spent five hours
'negotiating' with those responsible
as they waited for 'specialist resources'
to unlock them. Officers have now
arrested seven people on
suspicion of trespass,
being unlawfully airside
and breaching London City Airport
bylaws,]

I'm pretty sure BLM UK is, at best, meant to be some sort of satire group or, at worst, an attempt to disparage the actual BLM movement. The fact that they are making such silly claims and there doesn't seem to be a black person among them makes me think it's the latter.

BLM protests in the UK are stupid anyway, we can't do jack**** about the state of the US police force.

Something else that strikes me about this stupid protest... there are poor areas in Newham but there are vastly wealthy parts now, with people moving in from all over because of its proximity and transport links to the city. And over in Tower Hamlets the gentrification is even more widespread. So, do they think the planes only fly over the poor bits?

They are ****ing idiots.

I think people with a brain understand the original premise of Black lives matter and understand that with every movement come opportunists. People that never actual cared about the movement are just going to use incidents like this to further discredit what it was actually about.

I find this outrage kind of hypocritical too since there was no outrage about the protest disrupting cross channel travelling yesterday from people protesting against refugee camp.

Because the camps are growing and Calais is fast becoming a port to avoid rather than go through, seems a legitimate protest to me for both residents and businesses alike, if the City Airport protesters were protesting about climate change for the whole community they might have had some sympathy.

m, if the City Airport protesters were protesting about climate change for the whole community they might have had some sympathy.
But last time they protested people found a reason not to listen. When they protested against actual deaths there was a reason not to listen. People always find excuses not to listen.

Whether you think their protest is legitimate or not the bottom line is if you're outraged about travel chaos caused yesterday you should have also been outraged about the chaos the day before. So to me the outrage is more about who the protest is coming from.

well of course people evaluate an action by its reason. The reason for the action at the airport yesterday was nonsensical, so it got the appropriate reaction.

I'm shocked there isn't more outrage about these boneheads weakening the ligitimate message of BLM in the US. They've made themselves, and the cause, look silly. If I was something to do with ehe BLM movement in the US I'd be bloody angry about what they did and what they said.

There's always a response. The initial response was blacks kill blacks so why complain about police brutality. It's equivalent to whites kill whites so why are there any sort of justice laws. Always an excuse. I don't actually know the legitimacy of the quotes and full context of what those people meant yesterday based on what's been put out but I doubt someone would actually care to sit with them and discuss what they actually meant.
