View Full Version : Why don't the BB psychologists screen-out Sociopaths?

Surely they have some ethical duty in this regard.
Sociopathy has become a form of entertainment, and many times these people will get really far in the show because of it.
It should not be encouraged, and it is a form of mental and emotional torture for the 'regular' housemates to be subjected to.
It's largely an invisible mental-illness because it does not conflict with our cultural aspirations of "getting ahead" / Capitalism.

They probably don't even check them nowadays
I think it's cause it helps make some of the best housemates.. People who come to mind:
Dan (BB10USA), Makosi (BB6UK), Paulie (BB18USA), Cassandra (BBCAN4)

there have been a number of psychologists, who have quit the show over the years, 2004,2005,2006,2011,2014,2015,2016, there are many people who should never of went into the house, but the bb bosses rejected their concerns,
Also it's SUPER hard to diagnose a sociopath because they know exactly how to give all the right answers. Paulie (BB18USA) even alluded to lying to the psychologist to get through
On that note though, I barely watched this CBB (only the finale) but Bear didn't come across as a sociopath at ALL to me, he's too unaware of what he's doing
I have a skill that allows me to identify a sociopath from miles away and bear really didn't give that vibe
I will say though that sociopaths would fair far better on the BBUSA/CAN version than the UK one, in fact the North American format of the game is to me, a sociopaths ultimate dream setting. A place where manipulation and fake charm is rewarded :D

bear 100% knew what he was doing lol
Tbh I only watched the finale as I said so really don't know much so was just a quick observation! What other housemates do you think had sociopathic tendencies Jake?

Caroline (BB13) comes to mind for me

LOL, I don't think they have done the psych tests for like 10 years or something  Don't think they were too strict with it anyway given the likes of Shahbaz and Nikki got in there
As for examples of sociopath, main one that comes to mind is Bea Hamil.

They do, but C5 overrule them.

They don't have them anymore.

They don't even check people's twitter accounts prior to entering so I doubt they do psych checks.
They don't have them anymore.
..yeah, I know...I miss the old style BB days when they had all of the sociopaths......

BB doesn't care for people's well being, it's about testing the Housemates and psychologically torturing them with demeaning tasks, annoying people to live with, the paranoia of not knowing what the public truly think of you (especially in the BB2-6 days) and how Davina/Brian/Emma is gonna treat you in your interview is another paranoia for the Housemates that BB wants them to be paranoid about.
They tend veer more towards exhibitionists more than sociopaths though... depends on the series.

I love the psychological aspects of this show, and hate the "I'm a celeb" type of vile tasks (vomiting contests etc.). It's a shame psyc on the side has gone, but at least we still have Pam Spears and Judi James. Without them it wouldn't be worth watching any more.

Congrats on spotting Dan as a sociopath. Most don't want to believe it.
That Australian guy with the long curly hair, who was on BBCan, is a prime example. I remember him openly saying on his original season that he doesn't care about people unless he can use them. He was a superb manipulator, superficially charming, and conned the hell out of the audience.
The reason they don't screen them out is that they're reasonably benign, as long as their behavior is monitored. Sociopaths who are physically or sexually abused when they're young are some of the most dangerous people in the world, however.

Yes from BBUSA Dan (BB10) and Paulie (BB18) come to mind.
From BBCAN, Tim (BBCAN4) and Cassandra (BBCAN4) definitely come to mind, definitely. I thought this throughout the season so i'm glad you saw it too!
But YES they make phenomenal houseguests. Dan and Paulie are my two favourite ever BBUSA houseguests and Cassandra was my favorite from last season!

I'd definitely disagree about Tim Dormer. I didn't see BBCAN4 all the way through but from watching his BBAU he didn't seem like a "sociopath" at all, particularly from his emotional response to a few of the evictions (and that clip from the web series he did with Ben where he got teary when Ben was talking about his personal demons). Loads of RTV contestants make claims about not caring about people etc in their VTs, the vast majority of it is bravado to get on the show.
I think he's someone who can get very into a game and separate strategic decisions from his personal feelings but definitely not a sociopath.

Sociopaths are the best kind of housemates.

But that's the point isn't it? Sociopaths can exert emotions just as well, if not better than a regular person it's just that it's all calculated and utilized to get a response. Plus, the fact that Tim saw little to no guilt in anything he did also adds to my thoughts

The psych test has always been a BB myth as far as I'm concerned. As for sociopaths, I feel like people use the term in reality TV very loosely and often apply it to people who they want to seem as cutthroat so it can boost their clout as a gameplayer or something. Like, Dan and Paulie are not sociopaths and even if they were, that's not complimentary even if it makes them Good Players. Dan is just a sleazy conartist and Paulie suffers from narcissistic personality disorder if anything.

I agree it's used lightly
Cassandra and Tim are not sociopaths, they are manipulative sure, but they are playing a game for money :umm2:
I don't think anyone on BB has been an out and out socipath, Bea and Makosi come closest

But with that thinking, we might as well theorize that everyone we've ever met is really a sociopath and everything that goes against that is all a calculated act. I like to take what I see at face value, especially since the thing with Ben I mentioned was about Ben suffering with depression (he even took an overdose) so I like to believe that his reaction was absolutely genuine and he cared about what his friend was going through rather than it being a manufactured response for personal benefit. I mean, what would he even have to gain in that particular moment from faking it?
And tbh him not feeling much guilt in game moves in an environment where they're all there to win doesn't signify him being a sociopath imo, it's a world away from the things a sociopathic person would be able to do guilt-free in the real world.

I think people don't actually know what a sociopath is.

I personally think Makosi falls more into histrionic personality disorder, but it's not like someone can only have one personality disorder and she definitely has some sociopathic tendencies lol like the cruelty with which she ****ing iced Kemal.
IDK, I think people just like to use the sociopath label in reality TV when they want to attribute someone's manipulative and conniving nature as Good Gameplay. Like you said, it's a structured game with a huge carrot dangling at the end, of course people are gonna lie.
Like, I don't think Kenneth Tong was particularly manipulative and he definitely didn't play A Good Game, but he's definitely a sociopath alol.

Except that I have a degree in psychology with a focus on psychopathy and anti social personality disorders :)
