View Full Version : The Nightly Show [Weeknights on ITV]

ITV is making a multi-million pound move into late-night comedy with a stripped show that it hopes can replicate the success of The Late Late Show with James Corden.

The commercial broadcaster has ordered a nightly series to be produced by Andrew O’Connor’s ITV-owned production group Cats on the Roof Media and exec produced by former Strictly Come Dancing and Top Gear boss Katie Taylor.

The currently untitled show is believed to have been handed an order of around 40 episodes and will be stripped throughout the week across a two month period. It will launch in the new year.

It is understood that the show will have revolving celebrity hosts.

Pre-production has started with producers currently developing a range of format points. It’s believed that the ambition is to develop a number of segments that can air on the linear show and also be shared virally, in the same way that Corden’s Carpool Karaoke and Drop The Mic strands are widely shared online.

ITV is still exploring plans for which slot to hand the show.

Initially lined up as an event series rather than an ongoing commission, it is thought to be the project which has caused director of television Kevin Lygo to weigh up moving the ITV News at Ten.

However, the broadcaster is also examining whether to air the show in a post-news 10.30pm slot.

It will be Lygo’s most ambitious order to date, after he replaced Peter Fincham as director of television in January.

It wont work without a sole host tbh - over in America the hosts are a huge part of the success, not to mention the fact that Rylan's chat show with the same objective kind-of flopped.

It's a good idea but it'll be spoiled by lazy ideas and bookings.

It'll be Mark Wright one night, Joe Swash the next etc etc. Flop.

Needs a sole, set host.

Mind you, Remember The Friday Night Project? That was fun and worked well. Justin Lee-Collins and Alan Carr were the mainstays then every week they had different celebs presenting.

Miss that show actually.

They've had two months to think of a title for the nightly show, and they settled for The Nightly Show. :suspect:

Hmm... not enthusiastic about this. Walliams is a lot better than who I'd have imagined they'd give it to but still far too annoying and one-note.

Was this the one based on SNL? Personally I think if there's no consistency between episodes it'll fall very flat, there needs to be some static parts, a la Friday Night Project

Jack_
03-03-2017, 07:39 PM
This is actually getting better but it needs a lot of work, the problem is it's trying to be too many things at once

It's not long enough for starters, so I'd say making it 45 minutes and then moving it to 10:30 would be a good move. Keep the topical monologue at the start of the show cause that's the strongest part, then have two guests on the sofa, a stand up comedy segment at the end and also a house band. Maybe chuck in a couple of irreverent games now and then

The set is far too flashy also, it needs a homely, wooden feel with a skyline backdrop

Well I love Davina but this was one of the worst episodes so far, some really painfully awkward moments, hopefully she gets better

For what it's worth I thought John did a good job last week, I particularly enjoyed him giving his opinions and liked that they were trying to channel the John Oliver/Jon Stewart type rants. More of that, less dull guests please

so what is the truth

Jack_
04-04-2017, 12:20 AM
I realise I'm the only person in Britain still watching this but it was the best its been production wise tonight and I was surprised

The live band really gave it some gravitas as I thought it would and should be a permanent fixture, introducing the guests (by someone as big as Redd Pepper) over the titles worked better, the backdrop finally suited the style of the show, going into the break and to the credits without cutting the music was much more professional, the 'Fake News' item is a good one but needs to be more sharply written (and more political/topical, they've cut back on this in recent weeks and its the wrong move), and Bradley approached the show as if he'd been doing it for months

For what it's worth, I thought Gordon was actually pretty funny? But Dermot (or Bradley, if he continues like this) is definitely the person they should go with in the event it gets recomissioned (which apparently isn't that unlikely). Move it to 10:30, extend it to 45 minutes, keep the band, start with a topical monologue and I think you've got a show with potential

Denver
