Getting offended for no reason seems to be the 'in' thing now.The worst part is some people think that when they say 'i'm offended' that everyone else has to move heaven and earth to make them feel better. The best response is usually to tell them to feck off and grow up.

So it's just the word 'Empire' she doesn't like? Better not tell her about Empire biscuits.

Empire biscuits are actually a biproduct of the slave trade though. Made from the floor sweepings of slave ships, apparently.

What makes you define yourself as a colonial?

Colonials were the IS of the day, not sure how many appreciate this.

Well playing devils advocate and all that, there are countries who would have been significantly better off if they'd stayed with the British Empire and the French and Dutch come to that! Some countries have been civil war torn since or ruled by home grown dictators far crueler than we would have been in this day and age. I like to think we've grown up some and have our big girl pants on now.

Our past does help to shape us and we can learn from it. There are things we can be proud of and things we should be ashamed of.

That pie looks tasty. I think it is PC correctness gone mad to imply anything about the name. The word Empire has been used in enough fantasies that it does't have to mean anything specific.

:umm2:

well the definition of Colonialism is : the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.

so it's not exactly a "nice" thing to be a part of, colonialism is responsible for a whole world of deaths and devastation to my country for example someone saying they're proud of that is a bit nasty, don't you think?

I do like the argument that certain countries would be better off if they'd just stuck with the Empire and gone with it...

A large majority of the poorest countries in the world are post-colonial. Would they be better if if they were still colonies? Maybe, marginally, but the obvious truth is that the BEST scenario for those countries, would be if we had never sailed up to their doorsteps in the first place.

The colonies stripped various countries of their resources, their lifestyle, their cultural identity and their ability to sustain themselves. Then the empire ended and they were simply left in that state. Colonialism created a global imbalance that is not only far from over, the knock-on effect is still massive.

Exactly. That argument makes me so angry I can't even reply to it but you've said it all in a much calmer way than I would have/could have

:nono: I never said I was proud of it.

However I do see a difference in historic colonialism and Islamic state in today's climate.

Having lived under Colonial rule, a bunch of us meeting up in a forum many many years later with the help of Facebook etc had our own little group under the banner The old Colonials.

But don't forget the positives.Think of all that heroin and cardamom we'd have missed out on without the empire.Plus the Indians wouldn't have discovered the pleasures of gin and tonic or maybe we wouldn't have or both.
