View Full Version : Milk first or last when you make a coffee?

One thing that annoys the crap outta me is when people put the milk in first when they make a coffee.Half the coffee does'nt dissolve and you end up with a sludgy mess at the bottom of your mug.
Do you put your milk in first? If so then why? What benefit do you get from this?

I don't make coffee yuk! but I make plenty tea and it's always milk last.

In theory if you put the milk in first, then pour the water / coffee in slowly, the milk warms from cold at a uniform rate. If you dump the milk into the hot water, the thin "stream" of milk gets heated instantly by the hot liquid. It does change the taste / "milkiness" of the coffee slightly.

Of course, the fact that you're talking about the coffee "dissolving" means that you're not talking about actual coffee at all :hmph: so it probably doesn't matter either way.

It goes sugar > coffee > milk > water and you stir as you pour to avoid it not dissolving

Also if I do the milk after I normally find I never leave myself enough room to get the right amount

 stop pouring?

It doesn't make any difference imo. I used to have a flatmate who'd swear that if you put the milk in first then you burn it when adding the water  but I don't think that's true. And I've never found the dissolving thing to be an issue. But I normally put the milk in last anyway because I usually judge how much I want by what colour it goes, but I'm not too fussy about that so I just do whatever most of the time.

 stop pouring?

That is not as easy as it sounds :nono: I'm never sure when to stop pouring, normally stop too late thinking 'ah there's plenty of room for milk there' but when I actually come to putting the milk in I've not left enough room and either end up with a coffee full to the brim or having to pour some away to make room for more milk

If it is instant coffee then it is coffee, milk and coffee cream first then add boiling water, the only time you get the bits of coffee floating on top is if you don't stir enough or the water isn't hot enough. Boiling water straight onto instant coffee taints the flavour for me.

If you put boiling water directly on to coffee it burns it, it should always be hot, not boiling water. Therefore, if you put milk in first, the water is not warm enough to dissolve the coffee hence the specks :idc:

I can not believe this thread is about instant coffee and you all think that is perfectly normal.

No wonder you are a tea drinking nation.

Brewed coffee...or coffee grounds, hot water, french press... then after you pour... milk or sugar or whatnot.

Personally, I drink it dark and black. :idc:

Yup, real coffee with just milk usually for me. If I must have instant coffee, e.g. I need the caffeine fix but it's all that's on offer, I have to have it with one sugar.

The reason being that instant coffee without sugar tastes like bile. Which should say it all.

I use dolce gusto capsules for coffee, some of them have instructions to put the milk capsule first and some say to put the coffee one first. :omgno: I always put the sugar in the cup first before making any hot drink because of the science of dissolving obviously. When I make instant coffee I mix the grains with the sugar and a tiny splash of milk to make a paste in the cup, then I put in the hot water, afterwards I put in my desired amount of milk.

Always last. Seems weird to put it in before you've even made the drink.
