View Full Version : Why do so many people hate pop music?

I never understood this. I constantly hear people saying how crappy pop music is, especially when the singer is female.
Why this stereotype? Okay, I know, some pop songs are quite cheap but not all of them.
In a Eurovision-devoted website called Wiwibloggs, commenters criticize pop songs all the time. They don't judge each song as a freaking song! They judge it based on its genre. And don't tell me that they just don't like pop music. It's not the case. They have this stupid stereotype in their minds that says "Reject every single pop song! Even if you like it!".

Because they're pretentious asshats
Pretty much this.
Not categorizing everyone in this, but many like to listen to music that is 'undiscovered' as such or that the majority of other people don't generally listen to. It's the whole mainstream/indie divide. If half the artists they listened to were in the charts they wouldn't give them a chance. :idc:

I just prefer bands really, mainly rock/indie. That's not to say I wouldn't have a sing to a catchy pop song in the car or whatever but it's not the sort of music I'd buy

That wasn't what I was saying, it's more the opposite way around - that people don't listen to music that they do like because of what it is. I doubt many people choose to like indie just cus it sounds cool.

The discrimination is against all pop songs, not just pop songs which are played by the radio all the time.
Isn't it fairly normal though for most people to only be fans of certain genres? Pop music is some of the most accessible though and that bothers some people I guess.
Leave wiwibloggs alone :hmph:

That's not chaos, that's art :fist:
I went through puberty in '95-'97 and we used to have the mix station on 24/7 when I worked in the office at school. That **** is still in my playlist. Also music was rad then.
...the internet is often brutal......what I find more (off the internet) is 'I don't generally like pop music but I like this (artist or song)...I think that we go through phases in our lives and when we're really young and not into music yet, we just mostly want to be the same as our peers..(I'm generalising obviously..)...but then we start to discover music and at a time when we're discovering fashion etc as well and exploring and finding our individuality.../that phase I our lives where 'same as everyone and not standing out as different I any way' isn't where we're at....so with music we tend to look for things that we can relate and associate with ourselves../maybe the lyrics relate to how we feel or the artist's lifestyle or whatever but it's that ..OMG, THAT'S ME moment, HE/SHE SO UNDERSTANDS ME...and that often doesn't tend to be pop/chart music because it can often be quite generic/samey of it's time so we don't fully appreciate it....
..I think in reflection though, we do more appreciate that some artists may have escaped us because of that...Abba for instance were very 'pop' and not really fully appreciated in the way they are now...and Madonna as well and she's stood the test of time is a great music artist in what she produces.../it's just the way of it really in how when we're discovering music for the first time and it having meaning and association and understanding in our lives, pop isn't something that gives us that so much....plus other reasons have been said also because I think it's a mixture of a few things and obviously something that can't be completely generalised....
..I was mostly a lyric person through my pop generation and lyrics weren't such a big part of chart music, it was mostly beat/dance etc and very samey...so I wasn't really drawn to pop, I was drawn to artists who wrote/sung great lyrics and that feeling that they understood me and my angst and agony as a teenager...

Leave wiwibloggs alone :hmph:
It's actually a great website! It informs me on Eurovision news and the writers are polite and nice to everyone.
The problem is people who comment there. Most of them are such ***holes!
They are so mean and annoying and they won't respect anyone's opinion.
Examples:
Charles, a person who spends his life trolling Wiwibloggs. He constantly talks about how Eurovision fans hate ballads (by the way, I love ballads), that they don't focus on music but gimmicks, they like an entry just because of the handsome performer, etc. He always speaks in an ironic way, always putting multiple dots after he finishes a sentence (Ammi, darling, you are nothing like him ). You simply can't take him seriously.
Plum/SummerWine=Plum, a Russian bitch who will insult anyone if they say they don't like Sergey Lazarev or his songs. She still can't accept he didn't win Eurovision and constantly posts political comments against Ukraine. She also wants Russia to boycott next year's Eurovision just because it's hosted in Ukraine. And at the same time, she criticizes the juries for voting "politically". How ironic...
She is obsessed, you'd better not talk to her when she is angry.
These and many others can drive you mad. And moderators there do absolutely nothing...

It's just the way of it really. People who love music on all sides can get very passionate about it (cite. tibb pop girl debates ) And pop being the most mainstream it's going to get the most attention, so there's stronger love for it as well as hate.
Also though, it's probably less credible because it has to be more generic to appeal to a mass audience, so often it can sound samey/lazy etc. And sometimes music that sounds a bit different can get ignored by the mass audience so it doesn't chart as well and the fans of that particular music might feel some resentment to the music that's in the charts because of it.
As for female pop singers getting more criticism, I think it is harder for women in the music industry to be seen as credible, but that's across all genres, and actually worse in rock and indie etc sometimes than it is in pop music. We still live in a very sexist society though so women sometimes have a harder time being seen as credible in a lot of different areas, not just music.

People don't hate Pop Music, I think people just like different eras of Pop Music.
Like I'm more of a 90's/00's person with my Pop Music (probably because I was growing up in those times I don't know) so that's my era for Pop Music, I do like some Pop Music in the 10's as well, but it is filled with too much Bieber/One Direction crap where anyone could write those songs, and it's also gone a bit too Dance-Pop obsessed.
For me good Pop singers today are.
Katy Perry
Years & Years
The Weeknd
Jason Derulo
Nick Jonas
Ed Sheeran
Rihanna
5 Seconds Of Summer
Justin Timberlake
I know that some of them were out in the 00's, but they are releasing Music today so that's why I've put them in my list with the newer ones.

Because when pop was invented it was different than what pop is today. Today literally everything is classed as pop but before real pop was associated with really cheesy songs like I don't know, wham, maybe, or maybe or think of something even cheesier, "bubblegum " music. If you think in terms of those original cheesy pop songs of course they weren't going to be to everyone's taste especially when other genres were on the rise too. I feel like in th earlier era's music was more associated with the type of people aswell. Like if you liked pop you're gay, if you liked rock you're macho, disco gay, ballads were acceptable, rnb for blacks, gangsta rap thugs etc...now it's different.
Those that are "pop" today sell millions anyway so not everyone must hate it...today.
Me I love everything. I'm a music hoe. Depends on the day.
