Coronation Street actor Marc Anwar has been sacked by ITV with immediate effect following a racist Twitter rant.

Pakistani-born Anwar, who plays love cheat Sharif Nazir on the soap, was dismissed after several shocking tweets about Indian people were found on his private Twitter account.

An ITV spokesperson told Metro that: ‘We are deeply shocked by the entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc Anwar."

"We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect."

It is understood that Anwar's rant was in relation to the conflict between India and Pakistan following the deaths of 17 soldiers at a Kashmir army base.

Anwar's character Sharif Nazir is currently at the centre of a major storyline on the soap where it has been revealed that he's been involved in a seven year long affair. It is not yet known how the writers plan to handle his character's exit from the show.

So he does not like his neighbours, would a Scot get sacked for having a pop at the English?

They probably would if it included a racial slur. I hate this 'PC GONE MAD' angry man logic, half the time its just common decency.

And the level of vitriol against India goes far beyond any lighthearted Scottish-English stuff. There is a serious amount of hatred between India and Pakistan - Pakistanis aren't even allowed to play in India's Twnety20 IPL tournament - can you imagine that happening between any other two countries

It's not PC, he's the face of a high profile show and using language like "b*****ds" and "p**s-drinking ******s" on social media. It's not about him disliking India or Indians but using racist language on a public platform. Rightfully, he lost that job.

The producers of a popular TV show can't be seen to condone aggravated chat of any sort, whether it be racist or anything else. He must have known that.

Not to mention Shelley King (his wife in Corrie) and Jimmi Harkashin (Devster) both have an Indian heritage, it would be an insult to those actors not to fire him for his actions.
