Kids are going to love this...

Schools in West Sussex are warning they may have no option but to cut their hours – even floating the idea of a four-day week – unless they are given emergency financial help from the government.

After years of underfunding, headteachers in every primary, secondary and special school in the county have written to parents saying all the obvious cuts to school spending have already been made. Now they are considering “modifying school hours” as a last-ditch attempt to cut costs.

School leaders in West Sussex – and other underfunded counties – were pinning their hopes on the government’s new national funding formula for schools, which was due to be introduced next year, to address historic inequities in the system. But that was delayed in the wake of the Brexit vote and now headteachers in West Sussex say they need a £20m emergency injection of funds next April to tide them over.

School should be six days a week just like work. One day "off" a week is plenty.

Children should get just 4 weeks summer holidays and 1 week at Christmas only

Teachers should be forced to work with the community six days a week during summer

It would only work if work was cut to a 4 day week too as people would need to arrange child minders etc otherwise (please can this happen???)

omg why do you want to force people to work so much? I'm hoping to retire in my 50's so I can actually enjoy retirement  Don't you enjoy your time off? Most people do, why do you want to try and force people to be miserable?

In May 2013, the Institute of Economic Affairs published a report on retirement. According to the report, retirement can increase the chances of depression and despair by 40%. It has also increased the prospect of developing at least one physical disorder by approximately 60%. The report is vividly explained by the BBC.

During the first year of your work retirement you experience some positive changes in your health and mentality. However, these changes do not stay forever. The subjects' physical and mental conditions soon started fading, and they started experiencing some poor side effects of retirement.

According to BBC, some common physical and mental ailments include heart disease, hypertension, stroke, blood pressure, and some signs of arthritis as well.

Whilst I think a 6 day working week is overkill I find myself agreeing with LT more than I used to on this one to be honest. Not necessarily that people should just work work work, but when people do retire, they should make sure they have a LOT of things to fill the time. And anyone that has a career that they truly enjoy, rather than one they're in just for the money, should stick with it for as long as possible.

I don't think 4 days would be a huge change, by Friday most kids are exhausted, it would cause huge issues for parents and childcare though
