With a single logo image, Rockstar Games has seemingly begun teasing an announcement on the future of the Red Dead franchise.

A wordless tweet (below) features the Rockstar logo on top of the mottled red texture used in art for Red Dead Redemption, leading many to believe the announcement of a sequel is incoming.

Following the tweet, Rockstar posted a similar image as a news story on its Newswire website, and changed the avatars and banners on its Twitter and Facebook pages to match the series' black and red motif.

A Red Dead Redemption sequel has been rumoured for some time, following the apparent leak of the game's map (tellingly featuring the city of New Bordeaux, the setting for fellow Take-Two published game, Mafia 3). That same leak suggested the game would be a prequel, and be set slightly to the east of the last game's setting.

Take-Two recently announced that Rockstar was "of course hard at work on some exciting future projects that will be revealed soon."

The last time Rockstar announced a new game - Grand Theft Auto V in 2011 - it used a similar tactic, saying very little initially and releasing a first trailer the week after. However, that announcement did come with a game logo and a date for the trailer, so it's by no means assured that this reveal will be handled in the same way.

Of course, there's also chance that this could be a current-gen re-release of Red Dead Redemption, in the vein of Grand Theft Auto V. Redemption was recently made backwards compatible on Xbox One, leading to a sales rise for Xbox 360 copies of 6000%.

We awarded Red Dead Redemption a massive 9.7 review when it arrived in 2010, and went on to name it the 29th best game of all time. Its lasting effects have been huge, going beyond even games to influence other media - Jonathan Nolan named it as a key influence on the new Westworld TV series, for instance.

To be fair, as the original wasn't called Redemption, technically this can still be RDR2 :joker:. That said I don't think R* are all that keen to have the games historically linked... especially if they're going with "Redemption 2" rather than "Red Dead R[whatever new name]".

It was released and developed by R* though. I just don't think it lived up to their vision of a Western game that they really wanted to make; and so the title of Red Dead Redemption has a bit of a double meaning (the redemption of the character, but also the creation of the game they really wanted to make the first time around).

Can't see it running at a decent frame rate with effects like those on the vanilla PS4 and Xbone. One suspects these are 4Pro / Scorpio level.

(To be more specific, the current gen can't handle those godrays, the mist, the smoke effects or the particle effects [dust and debris] when the horses are running at the end... probably not at all, but definitely not over 30fps.)

You know, this is probably the first Rockstar Game I'm not overly excited for. GTA V kinda soured me, the story was a jumbled mess, where it 90% of the cast went neglected. The three main characters were basically in a nutshell Psycho/Gangsta/Retired Crook, there was no personal growth for these characters, the villains were all kinda lacking with only that TV FBI guy ending up as a half decent villain (the idea that the random gangsta Franklin dissed in that one mission, and some other guy ranked alongside him was kinda dumb). The parody stuff was also way more in your face this time around, there was zero subtlety in what they parodied.

Then Rockstar said they were going to do story DLC, in 2014, it's now 2017 and there is no story DLC, they've milked the shark cards as hard as they can with all these 'free' dlcs that cost impossible amounts of ingame money. The game itself lacks a lot of the cool physics and general fun that could be had in GTA IV, which had much more fun multiplayer modes.

Though GTA V's world was extensive, there seemed a lack of things to do, and the world didn't feel as alive as IV, for example, there's trains in V, but you can't even catch them (though there is the trams in Los Santos). I dunno, it just feels like GTA V just wasn't upto the same level as the rest of the Rockstar Universe.


Oh, and they fired Leslie Benzies, the guy who steered the different series from GTA III to GTA V, and I don't think the drop off of quality is a coincidence either.

More likely it'll be mostly compressed on the disk and will unpack a huge install file (and thus even the disc-based version will run mostly or entirely off of the hard drive). Likewise, the digital version will be 90gb unpacked but very unlikely to be a 90gb initial download.

To be honest, I think you have to enjoy the general western story / atmosphere to get a lot out of the first game. GTA5 for example is a fun / competent open world playground game to mess around in just for the action even if you totally ignore the characters and storyline, but RDR is one that you have to get immersed in for it to be worth it. I really enjoyed it but, quite tellingly I guess, I only played through RDR once whereas I've played through every GTA game since Vice city at least 3 times. San Andreas about 7 times :umm2:.

That would totally depend on the speed of your internet :think:. Even if it's 100GB, to take 30 hours would mean an 8mb internet connection. Most people have at least 20mb these days. Mine runs at about 45mb... which should mean a download time of under 6 hours.

Well I've only just started really, just set up camp / gone to the little town but I've already accidentally failed miserably to be moral due to controller errors :think:. I was going to let the train guards live but I accidentally fired my gun at the ground instead of talking, they all started running, so I had to kill them...

... Then on the first "real" mission where the guy recognised the group and rode off, only to fall off a cliff, I was going to help him up and talk to him but... I accidentally threw the lasso in his general direction and he fell :worry:. So I've already accidentally murdered 4 out of 4 people, when given the choice to talk instead. It's not going well.

My game is a ****ing Benny Hill sketch, seriously, I saved a random woman in the middle of nowhere who was trapped under a horse... Offered her a ride home... Except there was a deer on the horse, so I had to take that off first, and in the mean time she was like "thanks anyway I'll just walk" because I took too long, so I rode over thinking I could maybe still talk to her and offer to help... And I accidentally rode over her! So now she is DEAD ffs.

Oh also, that first mission where you rescue the girl from the guy in the hotel room, first time I played it when the guy got knocked down with a punch, his head hit the side of the bed and blood spattered EVERYWHERE in such a dramatic fashion that I assumed it was scripted and that the guy was supposed to be obviously dead.

I replayed for the gold and it was just a normal KO punch.

I've given up and taken the hint about being a white hat, gone mischievous darkside :hee:. It's actually loads more fun, like encountering a guy with his leg in a bear trap and choosing "antagonise" so that you're just like "Lol look at u" then putting the poor fellr out of his misery and stealing everything from his horse.

I mean if I'd tried to help him I'd just have accidentally killed him anyway... Why prolong it?

I also just did the first mission in Strawberry where you get a huge bounty and, as I was wanted there anyway, immediately snuck back into town under the cover of darkness and robbed the stores :joker:.

Like it’s virtually impossible to get gold since you don’t even find out what the objectives are until you first complete the mission then when you replay you have no tonics and level 2 stats :skull:

So you have to get like 30 headshots with about 3 seconds of deadeye, sis it’s just not realistic

Rockstar sued by real-life Pinkertons over Red Dead 2

Fans of Rockstar’s hit western series Red Dead Redemption are doubtless familiar with the Pinkerton Detective Agency. In both games, Pinkerton agents appear as antagonists, working to bring down the outlaws that serve as main characters. What many fans might not know is that the Pinkerton Detective agency still exists today, and they are currently threatening to bring legal action against Red Dead creator Rockstar over their portrayal in Red Dead 2.

Pinkertons have long been a franchise staple, and indeed, are an integral part of the world of the 1870s. In the first game, it was Pinkerton agent Edgar Ross that served as one of the game’s primary antagonists. The Pinkertons returned in Red Dead 2, once again serving as antagonists as they hunted down the Van Der Linde gang in the waning days of the old west. For the most part, it’s a portrayal that is historically accurate, as the Pinkertons played a major role in bringing outlaws to justice during that era.

The agency, currently known as Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations, filed a cease-and-desist against Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive in late December. They allege that Rockstar used Pinkerton trademarks, including their distinctive badge, without permission, and are seeking compensation. In the letter, they state that they are willing to accept a “lump sum figure” as settlement, but are willing to file specific legal action for trademark infringement and other offenses if an agreement can’t be reached.

In particular, Pinkerton Investigations also seems to take issue with the fact that they are portrayed as the game’s villains. In the cease-and-desist letter, they state that they believe their portrayal is “likely to blur the distinctive character and tarnish the reputation of Pinkerton’s famous trademarks.”

Rockstar has fired back, stating that their use of the Pinkerton Agency in the game is protected under the First Amendment. Specifically, they state that historical references are made throughout the game, and that their inclusion of the Pinkerton Agency is necessary to accurately reflect the atmosphere of the era. In addition, they argue that of the game’s 106 missions, the Pinkertons only appear in 10, and have also appeared in many other Wild West-era works of media without issue.

Though Pinkerton Investigations has yet to respond to Rockstar’s counter-claim in an official capacity, Red Dead 2 raked in just over $725 million in its opening weekend alone, meaning any financial settlement would likely be a hefty sum.

I don't think there's any point in the game where they make out that Dutch 'n' co are morally in the right... they're portrayed as deeply flawed humans who aren't "all bad" but still do some pretty awful things.

If you like RDR1 / GTA games / Open World games in general then yes. If not then I'm not sure why you'd be considering it anyway :joker:.

I love GTA but i haven't really played RDR1 :shame:

Well, it's essentially GTA5 in terms of gameplay (and writing, humour, etc.) except you ride horses instead of driving cars.

And if you're like me and find the horses hard to get the hang of, the first 5 - 10 hours will be mainly falling off of horses, crashing into trees on horses, falling off of cliffs on horses, accidentally trampling & killing people (and twice their poor dogs :( ) on horses...

I did get mostly proficient eventually though. I still SOMETIMES crash full speed into a wagon and go sailing through the air, but it's quite rare.

If you aren't sure I would wait or get it a bit cheaper to be honest.

It's my favourite game of 2018 and favourite game since Until Dawn but it did take a bit of getting used to the whole riding around on a horse for an hour to do one task can be a bit monotonous. Online isn't great yet either, mostly filled with greifers and not many fun mini challenges just yet but it is still beta tbf

The only times I've found it really grating are when you travel half way across the map to a side mission marker, and it turns out to just be a 30 second cutscene so you just have to hop back in the saddle and go all the way back again.

OH... or when you travel for ages to get to a mission marker and then you accidentally do a minor crime and it locks the mission :facepalm:. Like when I decided to get right up to the north of the map for part of the Marko Dragic mission "quicker" by stealing a train because it's right next to the railway line. I didn't think that one through :umm2:. No mission, no horse, and stuck in the middle of nowhere with a $75 bounty.

So I've reached the epilogue, finally got to when it opens up and you get all the stuff back etc, ride on off the ranch, fell down a hill, horse died, no horse reviver, had to steal a steal a new horse and its slow af.

... So I thought hey I'll jump to a train to get to a fence because I have loads of loot, but a guard got mad so I shot him, then the law came and I shot them, and now I have $27 and a $200 bounty. Ffs John...

Got to the epilogue and just thought maybe I could go back to beaver hollow and see if stuff was still there or if I could loot Arthur’s body

Half way there I get attacked and killed by some Spanish pricks I’ve never seen before and then I get there and some other gang is living in the bloody caves :umm2:
