View Full Version : Best voice of the 20th century?

Or 21st century if you like.

My vote would have to go to Robert Plant - possibly one of the best voices ever! Seen him live, and he sounds just as good in concert too (and he's a local lad!)

Jay Kay has got a great voice too.

Also Mick Jagger - not technically brilliant, but absolutely perfect for the Stones.

Loads.

Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Elvis, Robert Plant, Whitney in her prime, Leann Rhimes - That's right, got a problem?, Freddie Mercury, Mariah Carey in her prime, Jeff Buckley, Kurt Cobain. I could go on

Jeff Buckley, hands down. 8 octave range, with subtle haunting tones.. Oooh.

And not many will agree with this, but Ian Astbury has one of those voices that you can't mistake. So unique.

Damon Albarn, too for much the same reasons.

I'd agree with Ian Astbury. Saw him live last month as the singer for Riders On The Storm - amazing voice.

Aretha Franklin of course. Jeff Buckley - would have to agree with that. His version of Lilac Wine is beautiful.

Jon Bon Jovi, Chris Cornell, Donny Hathaway,Prince and loads more.

I agree with Dan on Chris Cornell.
I know I use this word too much, but once again his voice is haunting. Prefer Audioslave-days though.

I first heard him when he was still in Soundgarden and heard Black Hole Sun on top of the pops and thought he was a good singer, I was proably only about 6 at the time.

Me. Unquestionably.

My close rivals would be Sam Cooke, Mr. Presley, Marvin Gaye, Lennon, Marley, Buckley, Cobain, Dean Martin, Crosby, Daltrey, Mercury....I could go on.

Ruth, I must say, I dont often disagree with you but I have to on Robert Plant. That high pitched yowling is just awful. Must be a girl thing.

If it were the birds...

Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Dusty Springfield, Randy Crawford..... one of them or maybe a few others

Robert Plant had a very impressive falsetto that he liked to show off when he could!!!

Jeff Buckley without a doubt...I could fall asleep to his voice every night!

I think George Michael has a good voice, not great but good.

By the way, there's no way Jeff Buckley has an eight octave range. These things are always exaggerated. Apparently Mariah Carey only has a five octave range and she sings in the whistle range,so there's now way Jeff Buckley has an eight octave range. Who was it who posted that false info.

No, I don't think so!
She's welsh and an opera singer and usually sings the welsh anthem before rygby matches.

I've heard of her Soph. I think opera singers are different they appeal to a different demographic.

All the recent ones again!!!!

How about Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Dusty Springfield, Luther Vandross. All are readily available if you want to check them out.

How about Brian McKnight. I think he's the best contemporary singer but I bet most of you haven't heard of him, not played on Radio 1 you see.

It was on a website but after further research I've found out it was 4 octave during most of his career, and 5 octave at the height of his career when he died.
