English-speaking teen 'could be Madeleine McCann' living on the streets in Rome says missing persons campaigners

A young woman has been found living rough in Rome who, a missing persons organisation says, could be missing Madeleine McCann .

The teen, who is said to be English-speaking, has no ID or passport, and has been sleeping on the streets.

Refusing to accept cash from strangers, campaigners online say that she looks like several missing girls, and has been working to identify her for more than a week.

The names which have been mentioned by the the Missing Persons of America organisation in her identification include Amanda Adlai who was abducted in Michigan in 2008.

They also suggested that she could be Maria-Brigitte Henselmann who disappeared from Germany in 2008 and Madeleine McCann, who vanished in 2007.

But according to police, the girl is not Maddie.

Met Police have reportedly stated thaty she is not the British youngster, reports The Sun, after a group campaigning for details on the missing child contacted them.

The group, supported by Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry, alerted Met Police to the claims publicised online, and told their supporters: "Thank you all for contacting us regarding this child. We have passed on to Operation Grange. They do not believe this is Madeleine.

“This is someone’s child, so if you know who this child is, please contact the authorities in your country. Please keep sharing too.”

Those who have met the girl, who is around 5ft tall, say she is polite and does not speak Italian. They add that she will answer to the name 'Maria' - but police say that's one of many names she has told them.

Missing Persons of America wrote on a website page dedicated to 'Maria': "There have been several people that think it may be Madeline McCann who would be 13 now.

"Madeline had a distinctive mark on her eye and it would be easy to tell if it was her by that identification."

They added that images of 'Maria' have been shown on Italian TV on a show called Chi l’ha vista, which specialises in finding missing people.

Omg this is someones lost daughter , lets hope they find out who she is and return her safely to her family quickly.

I think it's bit ridiculous/insensitive for the mirror (or whoever has said it) to say that it could be Maddie. I mean, she would be what, 13 now? And that girl looks around 18/19. Plus it looks absolutely nothing like her lol

..they have apparently identified her, she is Asperger's and has been missing for 6 months... thank goodness the pic was posted and she'll be with her family again but wow, that she's been able to get through that amount of time on her own and without her familiars...:lovedup:...

The devastated father of the Swedish student at the centre of Rome's homeless woman mystery has revealed she doesn't want to come home.

Embla Jauhojarvi, 21, told her heartbroken parents that she wants to remain sleeping on the streets in Italy after she dramatically rejected their pleas for her to return to Sweden.

Following an emotional reunion at the Swedish Embassy, her distraught father Tahvo told MailOnline: 'She's a wreck. Embla is not herself. She is a different person. She barely talked to us.

'She wants to go back to living on the street. She doesn't want to come home.

'We want to take her back to Sweden but it is so difficult. If she were in Sweden it would be so much better.'

Breaking down in tears the 54-year-old businessman, who flew from his home in Stockholm this morning to see her, added: 'How can the [Italian] authorities let her go back in the streets. She is not well.

'I cannot let her go back to sleeping outside and begging for food.'
