BBC1+1 proposal rejected

BBC Trust says the new channel would hit the profits of ITV and Channel 5 too severely and wouldn’t be watched by enough young people

By Ben Dowell
Tuesday 30 June 2015 at 12:00PM

Plans to launch BBC1+1 have been stopped in their tracks by the BBC Trust.

The governing body issued a provisional rejection of the proposal by BBC management to launch the service to replace the space on the Electronic Programme Guide [EPG] left by BBC3. Today the Trust also gave provisional approval to BBC3’s closure as a broadcast channel.

The BBC’s management had been hoping to launch the BBC1+1 catch up service which was seen as a crucial means of shoring up the viewing numbers and share of BBC1. Director general Tony Hall announced the plans in October 2013, describing the service as designed to "give people more of what they've already paid for".

However the Trust said that the proposals would have an “adverse” effect on the rest of the industry “capturing viewing share for the BBC at the expense of commercial channels and reducing the profitability, in particular, of ITV and Channel 5".

The proposal had a “lack of distinctiveness” the Trust ruled in its interim adjudication today.

The body also said that a BBC1+1 channel would have a “limited impact” on viewers aged 16 to 34 “which means it would be unlikely to mitigate the impact of changes to BBC3”.

Theoretically the BBC management can come back with a revised proposal before the interim decision is rubber stamped by the Trust, but sources say this is very unlikely to happen and if it does is even more unlikely to succeed.

The ship has sailed for a +1 channel, it would be about 7 years too late for it. Besides, who actually still watches live TV anyway?

In this day and age, who doesn't have a DVR? (Sky+, Freeview+ etc.)

I really don't understand the point of +1 channels at this point. If you can't watch it live, record it and watch it whenever you want?

You really shouldn't assume that. I have Sky but with an old box and have no desire to update, I pay Sky too much money a month as it is.

I do however have a fire stick to watch +1 channels. If op or others want +1 it should be available.

I used to pay 60+ pound p/m, but decided to ring them up and cancel, they then offered me it at £31 p/m for a year.

When that year ended I rang them back and told them I couldn't afford anymore than what I'm already paying, so instead of losing a customer, the had no choice but to keep the price the same.

Sky are dying, they need all the customers they can get.

My advice would be to get in touch, tell them you can't afford that much any longer and if they can't help you, just tell them you'll cancel, if they don't agree to what you want straight away, they'll be ringing you up begging you to come back for the price you want.

To be fair, I recently cancelled the sky movies package because its easier to stream movies on the internet, same goes for sky sports. (Same goes for shows I miss, theyre usually on iPlayer-type sites once they finish, so I agree with TS a +1 isnt entirely necessary).. I wouldn't be surprised if Sky were dying.

BBC can't even manage to make BBC One HD accessible to local news, there's no way in hell a plus one channel would be localised...

It's definitely not for me Ari, I'm a "cord cutter" and haven't had ANY form of over-the-air television since I cancelled sky over a year ago. No dish, no aerial, superfast fibre optic broadband. Sign of the times. Utter bliss.

I pay about 70 pound pm but have been reluctant to pay 10 pound extra for this and 10 pond extra for that in principle as seems pretty extortionate to me.

Thanks for your advice. Not that fussed if they call my bluff, will just change provider.

It would I believe involve getting a new box and as my other one is working fine I don't want to pay the extra charge. Pretty fed up with Sky anyway and don't want to give them any more of my hard earned money.

Cancel, ignore all of their offers to try and get you to stay, they will try REALLY hard. Wait two weeks or so and you'll start getting letters asking you to "come back" - you'll get your current package for half of what you pay now (plus a new box, free). If you can hold out for maybe 3 months they'll start giving even lower offers.

I think at one point they were trying to get me back by offering full package (minus sports / movies) for about £6 a month (£12 a month to include movies), plus half price line rental and broadband :joker:.

The only thing they'll basically never discount is Sky Sports, because they (I believe) have to pay out a decent chunk of it to the various teams.
