Ford has said it will cancel a $1.6bn (£1.3bn) plant it planned to build in Mexico and instead extend operations at its factory in Michigan.

The US car giant will spend $700m on expanding the plant at Flat Rock.

Ford said it needed to re-organise to use existing facilities more efficiently amid falling sales of its smaller cars.

The President-elect has criticised both Ford and its rival General Motors over production of models in Mexico.

Earlier, Donald Trump tweeted his disapproval of GM's production of the Chevy Cruze in Mexico.

That's an old article referring to something different. Even that article there says:

There’s one problem with those statements. Ford Motor Company never was planning to shutter a Kentucky plant and send those jobs to Mexico.

Ford’s plan all along has been to shift small-car production from Michigan to Mexico, but without eliminating any American jobs in the process.

Well that's not happening anymore - they're not moving production from Michigan and are in fact extending it instead

Ford's Chief Executive itself has said that Trump's impending presidency did play a part in that decision even if it wasn't the main reason:

Ford's chief executive, Mark Fields, told the BBC that the main decision to cancel the plant in Mexico was because of a "dramatic decline for the demand for small cars here in North America," allowing the company to cope with its existing plant.

But he said another factor in the decision was the "more favourable US business environment that we see under President-elect Trump and some of the pro-growth policies that he's been talking about".

"That did play a part and it's a vote of confidence that he can deliver on these things," Mr Fields added.

I don't see why this is a problem, an American company keeping jobs in America. I remember reading about the "I'm Backing Britain" campaign in the 60s... what a pity people aren't backing it now.
