View Full Version : RIP Nan
Will.

My nan (Beryl) passed away in hospital on 4th January 2017 at 8:10PM.
Beryl suffered from two strokes in May of 2016 and spent about a month in hospital before making a recovery and moving into a care home.
My nan never truly liked the care home as she always wanted to stay independent and live at home, however she made the best of the situation and still led an active lifestyle.
Unfortunately she fell down the stairs at the care home and it was a couple of weeks before she was taken in hospital as the doctors failed to notice she had broken several bones. She was given pain killers and it breaks my hurt knowing she must have been in so much pain in the weeks before they noticed she had broken bones.
Once she moved back into the care home her care plan was supposedly advanced so she wouldn't have any more accidents.
However it's break my hurt to tell you that the care home failed to look after her and she subsequently fell down the stairs again and was taken in hospital in early/mid December.
My nan had broken several more bones around her shoulder/arm/legs/foot and she had shattered her elbow which means the bone was broken beyond repair.
Beryl spent most of December and unfortunately struggled to improve, she had a punctured lung (I think - struggling to remember all the exact details) and this resulted in a chest infection which had serous effects on her.
I visited her on the 2nd January and this was the second last time I ever saw of her, sadly her voice was mostly gone due her chest infection and she asked how college was going and she saw my new coat for the first time (she had wanted to see it for a while).
Later that evening things took a turn for the worst and she became even more poorly and the decision was made for me to go and see her on Tuesday morning.
The visit was emotionally heartbreaking and I struggled to get into the room because I had a breakdown minutes before seeing her. I went with my mum and we all cried whilst being with her, she had an oxygen mask on and she was asleep.
I held her hand in my final visit.
The next 24 hours she was very sleepy and nothing improved.
Unfortunately on Wednesday evening she passed away.
Beryl was a very kind and sweet lady, she lived in a small road with a few other elderly people who she loved and helped in the best way possible, unfortunately none of them are still around.
My nan loved animals, especially penguins! She was very much against animals being killed and was a proud vegetarian. She loved her daily trip into her local town, she knew all the bus drivers.
Her hobbies included puzzles, reading, gardening, and antiques.
She loved her wine!
I visited her at least once a week, she would always cook me pasta and give me loads of food. :hehe:
She was practically a second mum to me, we did everything together and I could tell her anything.
I know she will be up in paradise with her feet up in a house filled with penguins drinking a glass of wine.
That's awful :(
I'm so sorry babes I hope you're okay
Rest in Peace.
Marsh.

Awh Will! My heart breaks for you. It's literally the most devastating thing losing a loved one. We're all here for you if you need to talk, just take some time to process and grieve. I don't know if you are religious but your Nan will always be watching over and you'll see her again one day, although I know that's not very comforting right now <3

This morning I was in my room getting ready because I was going to help clear her room in the care home taking her belongings back to her house.
On my chest of drawers on the other side of my room I keep my perfume and christmas cards on the top.
I got my card from nan this Sunday from the care home as she went into hospital before christmas.
As I was getting ready the card from nan fell over, I believe this is sign that she is with me. There's no explanation to why it fell, my door, windows, curtains were all closed and her card it was in the middle, it wasn't on the end.
It felt as if she was saying hello.
xx

Thank you Marsh, it's really helping me having all this support.
That's what breaks my heart, to know it was so avoidable and she could easily still be here, that's the only comfort knowing she's not in pain anymore.
It's so irritating because she cared for everyone, she would go down the town at anytime for anyone, she would always get her neighbour her food shopping if she needed something. If I asked her for something, she would be out the door before I had got off the phone. :(
The world really isn't a fair place. :(

My nan loved animals, especially penguins! She was very much against animals being killed and was a proud vegetarian. She loved her daily trip into her local town, she knew all the bus drivers.
Her hobbies included puzzles, reading, gardening, and antiques.
She loved her wine!
 She's such a (good) image of how I imagine British old ladies being  She's amazing, I would have adopted her to be my nan also
I read it all and it's all very really touching. It reminds me of when my family (with him) decided to move my (widower, advanced cancer-sick) grandpa to this care home and one week after it he choked on his food and passed away. It came to all of us as a shock, understanding how everything is so fragile. But we knew it wouldn't have got any better had he remained alive, and as he lived life to its fullest, altogether it was bitter sweet. We remember and cherish him and the good person that he was with a great smile on our faces and you celebrating her life is the best thing you could have done.
really sorry here to hear that will. R.I.P :( hope you're okay!

We remember and cherish him and the good person that he was with a great smile on our faces and you celebrating her life is the best thing you could have done.
lool, I'm sure she would have loved that.
Oh that's ever so sad and unexpected, I'm so sorry, that must have been a huge shock. He sounds like a lovely man, I'm sure he is a very proud grandpa looking down on you all.

They say time's a great healer, but it took me a long while to get over my mum's death. I say get over, you never forget.
Over time fond memories replace sadness.

So sorry Will. At least she had a loving family. Maybe not the time to say this, but that care home sounds as though it needs investigating. When any elderly person falls, the chances of broken bones is extremely high and it seems negligent at the very least, to think that they didn'øt take her to hospital straight away to be checked out.
I hope the pain is gradually healing Will and I'm sorry to hear this :( I've never really lost anyone so I can only imagine how hard it must be

I completely agree, it does need investigating, I think there's a lawyer on the case atm.
After she fell once and returned to the care home she was supposedly put on a higher care plan but then she fell again and that resulted in her death in hospital. :(
It's a shame because it's a beautiful care home and most of the staff are quite friendly.
Although when she went into hospital no one from there ever contacted to see how she was.

It's honestly the most frustrating thing in the world to know that she could still be alive today if she hadn't had fallen...
I find it so difficult thinking that what if she decided to stay in her room a bit longer and not gone down the stairs.

I know what you mean. My mum went to hospital with a nasty sore on her leg that wouldn't heal. She ended up having a heart attack two weeks later, and died.
I regret her going to hospital and wonder how different things would have been if she had been treated at home.
That was three years ago. I don't get sad now. Indeed I often laugh at the funny things she'd say.:joker:
Even in death a loved one can bring much comfort.

The funeral was very sweet in a little chapel, it wasn't religious because she wasn't in her later years in life.
There were cuddly penguins laid around the chapel as they were her favourite animal and everyone got given penguin pins to wear.
It was a fairly short service, the speaker was ever so nice and it didn't feel like a funeral until the burial.
Her burial was short, it was quite cramped aroud the area and had to be careful where to walk because didn't want to fall in!
The wake was cute at a pub near my aunties, I met my great aunt (nans sister) who is like my nans twin, they look and act so alike! She was telling me such funny stories about when she lived in east London.
You would all love my great aunt, she's just like my nan! I felt so comfortable around her and could spend hours talking to her, I hope to go and stay/visit with her sometime.

6 months ago yesterday :(
The last couple of months have been really bad, I've been really depressed and struggling with sleep.
I'm trying to keep myself busy over Summer by doing sport (Tennis and Swimming) for the first time in a lost time. It helps quite a bit.

I hope that the Sports activities can take your mind off of your Nan (if that's the right way to put it) but I hope that you know what I mean.
I think that it's good to grieve, but you definitely don't want your Nan passing away to be on your mind 24/7.
I really don't know if this is coming off as bad what I'm saying here, but I hope that you're okay Will.

Losing your nan is literally the worst thing ever. It's a good idea to keep yourself distracted/get a new hobby so you're going the right way about it. Time is truly the greatest healer.
P.s. This is really random but Leona Lewis - Better In Time is the song that mostly describes your situation, same with mine when I lost my nan. I'm sure you're aware of the song, it's very emotional but thought I'd still tell you. Most underrated song ever.

aw Will, its normal when you were so close to her that you will be grieving, and you will grieve for a long time, people seem to think that grief is something that is over and done with at the funeral, but it is only in the weeks after that realisation hits, I lost my Mum 2 years ago and still randomly cry at times when I think of her, loss takes along time to get over

Yeah constantly thinking about it really doesn't help emotionally and mentally. Yeah hobbies and keeping myself busy definitely helps because you have something to focus on if that makes sense.
