US President Donald Trump's administration has instructed the Environmental Protection Agency to remove the climate change page from its website, two agency employees have told Reuters.
It is latest move by the new leadership to erase former president Barack Obama's climate change initiatives.
The employees were notified by EPA officials yesterday that the administration had instructed EPA's communications team to remove the website's climate change page, which contains links to scientific global warming research, as well as detailed data on emissions.
The page could go down as early as today, the sources said.
"If the website goes dark, years of work we have done on climate change will disappear," one of the EPA staffers told Reuters.
They said that some employees were scrambling to save some of the information housed on the website, or convince the Trump administration to preserve parts of it.
The sources asked not to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
A Trump administration official did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The order comes as Trump's administration has moved to curb the flow of information from several government agencies who oversee environmental issues since last week, in actions that appeared designed to tighten control and discourage dissenting views.
The moves have reinforced concerns that Mr Trump, a climate change doubter, could seek to sideline scientific research showing that carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels contributes to global warming, as well as the career staffers at the agencies that conduct much of this research.
Myron Ebell, who helped guide the EPA's transition after Mr Trump was elected in November until he was sworn in last week, said the move was not surprising.
"My guess is the web pages will be taken down, but the links and information will be available," he said.
The page includes links to the EPA's inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, which contains emissions data from individual industrial facilities as well as the multi-agency Climate Change Indicators report, which describes trends related to the causes and effects of climate change.
The Trump administration's recently appointed team to guide the post-Obama transition has drawn heavily from the energy industry lobby and pro-drilling think tanks, according to a list of the newly introduced ten-member team.
Mr Trump appointed Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, a longtime foe of the EPA who has led 14 lawsuits against it, as the agency's administrator.
The Senate environment committee held a tense seven-hour confirmation hearing for Mr Pruitt last week.
No vote on his nomination has been scheduled yet.

People will still deny that Trump is going to be a disaster. Like an actual catastrophe. He's been in power for less than a week and he's already making dangerous changes and decisions.

They will not. And those who do will never admit it. I think we need to just accept that.

I'm not a climate change denier.I do believe that our polution/carbon footprint has an effect on global temperatures however i do also believe that the earth would still be going through this warm period without human influence. It's what the earth does. It's been hot and cold and hot and cold many many times in history. It was warm like this back in medieval times for instance and they did'nt have petrol powered chariots. Then there was an ice age.
The earth will get cold again and there will be another ice age and then it will get warm again etc etc.We hear things like "it's the warmest time since records began" but records have only been in existence since the mid eighteen hundreds.Less than a blink of an eye in earths history.
We absolutely must have an effect. It seems impossible that we don't but how big of an effect who knows.
Trump definitely going to upset alot of people. It seems that he was'nt all bluster during his campaign.Let's just hope he's not totally insane.

I don't know if you've actually looked into the science behind it, but the effect we are having on this process ("The Greenhouse Effect") is actually likely to completely disrupt the cycle and lead to catastrophic and irreversible climate change within a few centuries. As in, the planet will be uninhabitable. Within 50 years (if we don't sort our **** out) the chain reaction will be established and there will be NO way to stop it, even if we were to cease all emissions entirely, the effect year on year will be self sustaining.
In other words; we have basically already destroyed the world. It has a cancer that is very unlikely to be cured (and even less likely now) and the planet basically has less than a thousand years left. Humans broke a billions-of-years-old planet in less than 200 years. It's pretty impressive, really.
Models predict that Earth will warm between 2 and 6 degrees Celsius in the next century. When global warming has happened at various times in the past two million years, it has taken the planet about 5,000 years to warm 5 degrees. The predicted rate of warming for the next century is at least 20 times faster.

The White House seemed to debunk media reports Wednesday that the Trump administration instructed the Environmental Protection Agency to remove the climate change page from its website.
“No, there is nothing that has come from the White House. Absolutely, not,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Wednesday when asked if there was a broader mandate going out to federal agencies about stopping all speech on climate change. Later Spicer told FOX News’ John Roberts that federal agencies have been told to “adhere to their own policies.”
but lol at all the replies to this thread who were happy to run with 2 alleged unnamed unofficial "sources" just to get the hate in on Trump.

Err, speak for yourself LT, I am perfectly capable of understanding the science behind climate change and I'm sure plenty of other Tibbers are too. Don't tar us all with your dirty Trump brush. Although I'm glad to see that I was correct with my "Trump supporters will miraculously become climate change deniers now" hypothesis :joker:.

When I was in Texas everything was so big, cars, food portions, big ass drink containers, consume, consume, consume, i never saw anything like it and I thought to myself, this lot are never going to do anything to try and help the environment improve, they want someone to lie to them and tell them global warming isn't real, carry on doing what you're doing, you're not to blame

It's changing TWENTY TIMES faster than at any time in millions of years, correlating perfectly with human industrialisation and with no other possible atmospheric or cosmic explanation. Come on LT. Your argument against it is right up there with "Well you can't DISprove that Jesus was the son of God!".
Its a billion dollar industry because people are desperately trying to figure out how to halt the effect before its too ****ing late, not because it's up for dispute or poorly understood.

I am not arguing against man made climate change just amused by the reaching based on such a flimsy piece of evidence it did not make it onto any news agenda today.
I know why, people are still so sore that their fave lost they will clamber aboard any tinpot claim or accusation that makes their "i told you so" gland produce a soothing balm to heal their open sores.
I will await the threads on climate change and China/india/indonesia/Africa
and the ones from members saying they wont be flying on unnecessary holiday this year due to their massive worry about climate change

There was a theory about that on the Daily Politics.Someone was saying that Trump does these things when there is a story that he doesn't want to get too much attention. That instance was the womens protest. He apparently puts out statements that will recieve press attention in order to push other stories further down the news agenda.

Stop clutching at straws to find anything to defend big orange Donny. You can "doubt" all you want mate, of course I bloody know what the EPA is (a US government agency to protect the environment- not just "a website") and while I don't know the scientific ins and outs of climate change, I'm rational enough to realise that 99% of scientists aren't wrong. Climate change is real, it is man made and we need to do something about it as a planet. Stop living in denial.
