Mean council has made me this fat

man who weighs 250kg (40st) has blamed a council for his problem –because he cannot fit through his front door to go for a jog.

Chris Leppard, 25, has not been able to move from his armchair for six months because of his bulk.

He suffers from Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic disorder which gives him an excessive appetite.

Mr Leppard has been warned his legs might have to be amputated if he does not fight the flab.

Now the keen chef wants council bosses to pay for a new entrance to the house he shares with his mother, or move him to a bungalow so he can get outside to exercise.

Mr Leppard, from Hastings, East Sussex, said: 'I have cut right back on my eating and feel I am doing really well – but because I cannot exercise I have still put on weight.

'I am forced to eat, drink and sleep in my armchair because I can't make it upstairs to my bedroom.

'I have been asking the council to move me to a bungalow with wider doors so I can at least make it outside – but they won't move us.

'It is so frustrating and upsetting. I am at my wits' end.'

Mr Leppard's mother and full-time carer Anne, 51, said she was scared for her son's health.

A spokesman for Hastings Council said: 'We continue to work closely with the family and fully appreciate the problems they are facing.'

At the height of Mr Leppard's illness he was consuming 5,000 calories a day by feasting on fry-ups and biscuits. His food bill totalled £9,000 a year.




Is this just an excuse, or do you think the council should pay up? Is it the councils responsibility, or Mr Leppards?

OMG I'm shocked - I would've thought that in having this genetic disorder, extra caution would've been taken in terms of his family looking after him and his own care for himself. Surely he would eat far more healthily and have better nutrition instead of consume 5000 calories a day.

I hope he manages to fight this, but now that the press and tabloids have been alerted I reckon more will be done for him regarding his council home. Although to be honest, as I stated earlier, I feel it is obviously his and his relatives' fault that he has even reached this stage. But now that he has, I do think he should be entitled to a bungalow or something similar because he really needs help - both in terms of eating and exercise! And after moving I reckon he then may perhaps take responsibility for his own actions and concentrate on his own welfare rather than blaming others.

I know what you are saying. And I know he has a medically recognized condition. But I am just a bit fed up with people blaming everyone else for their condtions/misfortunes. Why doesn't he sue the council for denying him his rights to exercise or something? Everybody is sueing here, there and everywhere at the moment. Take some responsibility people. You are partly responsible for your afflictions.

Yeah I did tie that in as well. The fact that after moving he may perhaps take responsibility for his own actions, and I also feel that it is the fault of himself and his relatives that he has reached this stage. However I think that now that he has, as I stated previously, he really does need help because he's going to die otherwise. And I reckon the fact that he says he will eat healthily and even exercise as well shows he is on the road to helping himself and finally taking control.

Is it all talk though? In my opinion, he should have done something about this a hell of a long time ago. Before it got so bad.

Yeah I agree, as I've said - also I mentioned the fact that he has a disorder, so surely he should have taken extra care instead of letting it get this far. But what I mean is now that it has, he really does need help and perhaps as a result finally take responsibility for his own actions and try and sort himself out with the right aid.

I am pretty sure that he should have some kind of support in place if he is indeed a prader willi syndrome sufferer as he is actually not able to take responsibility for his own actions with regards to food and his health care specialists would know this.

This is from the PWS website so that people can have an idea of what this syndrome is and understand why this guy really cant be solely responsible for his size if there is noone there to monitor his intake:

He will probably really think that it is the council that have made him fat as he could well be unable to understand that it is his own actions making him this size.

I feel for the guy I really do and I wonder who is providing his care on a day to day basis as he obviously needs it. Whoever it is needs a huge kick up the backside!

Interesting view Sunny. He must have 24 hour care though. So somebody must be monitoring his intake. But they obviously are not doing a good enough job. The guy could lose his legs.

As for blaming the council that the door is not big enough. Like you say, he may think that, but it's ludicrous.

Totally agree - he should indeed have 24 hour care and it really is his carers if he has them that are failing in their duty of care towards him. He may not be a child but his syndrome means that he will be very childlike especially with his approach to food and his reasoning skills.

A very tragic story indeed, and maybe now it has been made public some real measures will be taken to help and support him back to a safe level of health.

Shouldn't come to this really. His "carers" should have done something about this sooner. Before things got so bad.

Did you read at all about the illness that this guy has? it isnt about the fact that he is lazy, he simply cant control what he eats. People with pradar willi will even eat blocks of lard, leaves off plants, etc anything in fact that they think resembles food.
