I'm not sure how I feel about this, Shannon now has a new identity and is living apart from all her family, her grandparents were never consulted about this at all, it seems very unfair to drag it up again. Imagine if a drama was made about Ian Huntley, it seems very insensitive and inappropriate, Shannon is 18 now so maybe the programme makers contacted her though this seems unlikely.
It looks very good. I'm looking forward to it.

Yes,, I can't imagine at 18 what it would be like to watch a "drama" about your kidnapping or even to know it is being aired, it must drag up a lot of unwanted memories. It was clear from the foreword that no consent was given

I was gonna watch it on demand until I saw this, I do loathe it when dramatisations of traumatic events are created without the victim's (or their family's in cases of death) permission.

I did feel a bit uncomfortable watching it as this was someones life as they knew it destroyed, and like Cherie ,I wondered what Shannon herself would have thought watching that if she did.

I live a couple of minutes away from where Shannon was found and the estate is a five minute drive. Council estates get lots of bad press but this community showed how they all rallied round and came together in such a shocking event. I really enjoyed the first one and looking forward to the second one. We can only hope that Shannon can overcome and be stronger as a person from the evil wrongdoings of her so called mother. I truly hope she can be happy in the rest of her life.

What the ****, did Karen genuinely get up and start dancing to the police woman's ringtone? And was Shannon's step-dad literally only playing games throughout the whole ordeal?
It's hard to gain perspective on what is dramatised in these kinds of programmes. I can't believe it was produced with Shannon not knowing too.

Yeah, from the things I was reading that was when the police started to suspect something was wrong and the step dad was always on his computer. Karen's friends had some imput on the script as well

yeah the one of the left and on the right is Natalie Brown who Sian Brooke plays who was more suspicious of Karen, which you will see throughout the first episode.

So the police were on to them quite fast then. It;s so weird to think I just started senior school when this happened.
Also, just realised Natalie is Sian Brooke's character, not Sheridan Smith. Sian is a fantastic actress.
How no one didn't listen to Natalie irl is beyond me.
When someone's best friend thinks something's up, then something's up.
Even stuff like Karen not caring where her remaining children stayed whilst she went partying until Natalie offered to put them to bed in her house for her.

the whole idea was a bit dumb, she was going to get caught either way. A scruffy person getting loads of money after getting their kid back will make people suspicious anyway and the person who held shannon hostage was linked to Karen and would have been found out.

I think their plan was to leave Shannon somewhere remote to be "found" once they'd gotten what they wanted.

oh yeah true but it would have been linked to Karen regardless because of the whole money thing since she was so sure she was going to pull it off and share the money but she wasn't intelligent enough to pull this off thats why she was caught.

I find Natalie and Karen's friendship so hard to believe given how it was portrayed.
Like Karen was a complete immature, lazy, horrid child with an idiot pervert boyfriend and given Natalie's attitude towards stuff like that how she was ever friends with her is baffling.

The scene in the police car is so intense.
I felt that the portrayal of Karen was quite off-putting and unbelievable at first, but I've realised that's because she's an off-putting and unbelievable person. The things like her dancing to the ringtone and waving randomly at people in the park are moments that I just can't get my head round, but it says a lot about the actress who played her. It's eerie because I wasn't sure if some of the footage was the actress or Karen herself.

I thought this too.
She came across differently to how she was in the clip on This Morning. I can't picture her as someone Karen would be scared could potentially 'batter' her.

Just finished watching episode 2.
It was a great two-part series, and the acting was brilliant (loved that the main cast were all female-lead). I feel bad for referring to Karen as a moron now I'm aware of her mental health issues, but that obviously does not entirely excuse her contribution to such a heinous act.
I just hope at some point, at all, Shannon can find happiness in her life.

No, I never said I was surprised she didn't appear.
I meant it's a testament to how well made it was that the actual victim of the entire ordeal didn't even have to appear onscreen for them to portray the actual disgusting actions of those involved and how it had a knock-on effect.
Also, on another note, nice shout out to David Cameron in episode 2 with the newspaper headline. People like him are a huge part of the problem when it comes to never ending cycles of abuse in families/communities like this. They are no help at all.

I see people are a little annoyed that Karen was portrayed as a victim. I was surprised with this angle too, very different to what we've been told in the media. I was under the impression it was well-thought out, pre-meditated plan, but this drama claims it was something that got completely out of hand. I guess we'll never really know the truth because Karen is a compulsive liar.
Brilliant second episode though, even though we all know the outcome, I was completely hooked.

I didn't see it as portraying her as a victim but rather portraying the perpetrators as not quite the "Evil" the newspapers (and David Cameron) liked to label them, but as people dealt an awful hand in life, with sh*t stuff in her life causing her to become what she did and mix with the people she did.
Sheridan's speech in the courthouse about not joining in with the "lynch mob" was really thoughtful.
