EastEnders star Jo Joyner and Casualty's Sunetra Sarker will reunite to lead Channel 4's new school drama The ABC.

The pair previously starred together in No Angels, which ran for three series from 2004 to 2006, but have since gone on to find fame as Tanya Branning and Zoe Hanna in EastEnders and Casualty respectively.

However, they will come back together to star in The ABC - which is based around two multicultural Yorkshire comprehensive schools being merged together to make an academy.

Jo has been cast in the role of the new academy's headteacher Mandy Carter, alongside fellow EastEnders alumni Paul Nicholls, who will play her PE teacher husband.

Sunetra, who departed Casualty last May after eight years with the show, will play dinner lady and single mother Kaneez Paracha.

The weekly 8pm hour-long show has already begun filming and will air later this year. It is being produced by Alex Lamb, who previously worked on both EastEnders and Waterloo Road.

Jo previously teased that she was working on something exciting up north when she took to Twitter to address rumours that Tanya could be returning to EastEnders.

A scene in last month's episode of the BBC soap left fans wondering if Tanya could be on her way back to Albert Square after her daughter Lauren and friend Jane had a long - and not-so-subtle - conversation about her.

Her message read: "Ahhh. I miss them all too! But I'm up north filming at the moment. I'll tell more when I'm able."

Tanya left the show in 2013, with Jo briefly reprising the role for the show's live week in 2015 - where she made her unforgettable 'How's Adam?' error.

However, after Tanya's on-screen husband Max returned to Walford after a year long break last Christmas, and with her daughters Lauren and Abi still very much around, fans are holding out hope that we could still see her again one day.

I remember seeing the yellow car SPEED past before Nas went to Missy but I didn't think it'd hit them - I just thought it'd be a recurring gag and we'd see some yellow car speeding in the background every episode (like the hamster ball in Malcolm in the Middle)

and now we only have eight episodes </3 Thirteen episodes was perfect, I had an episode to look forward to every week for pretty much the entire summer, and there were so many stories going on with all these different characters, with them sometimes linking together, never overstaying their welcome, and never getting confusing. It's honestly such a shame we've only got seven more episodes this year (or ever?), even more so without Big Brother to watch (and I've not watched LI this year so I'm gonna have to like, rewatch a BBUK </3)

I appreciate that realistically so many staff would've been cut off like that (and do) but wasthere any need to cut so many liked and relevant characters? They just couldn't cull like one big one and some background ones could they? (or better yet - NO ONE AT ALL)

I agree with you about it feeling different, and as cringey (and extremely out of place) it was, I bloomin' loved it :joker: really jarring to see something a bit more cringey than HSM in such a progressive show that's more focused on serious topics, but I really enjoyed it!

I knew it was gonna be a fakeout </3 I saw this thread get posted on a fair bit so I already had a suspicion, and the moment I saw she was fine I thought "she's got a head injury hasn't she?", And the moment she got blurred vision I thought "oh **** they're really doing this?'

It doesn't help that the 4od thumbnail for the episode is of Nas and Hayley looking sad and upset :bawling:

I love Ackley Bridge and I never would quit a show because of a character's death but this just makes me wish this was the last season. And usually I don't mind if a show goes past it's expiration date and we have seasons of utter tripe. This just has to be the last season and they better make something out of Missy's death

Nasreen move into her dorm at Oxford. Missy, now dead, monlogues about Nasreen while we see Nasreen at Oxford

Mandy gives birth and calls her child Missy (or the Master if it's a boy!)

Aaron comes back to make things work with Missy but finds out she's dead. Instead he goes with Pete on the fair to carry on her dream. Pete and Aaron marry

Emma Keane becomes a pornstar - this scene may be deleted with the looming porn restrictions

Missy's mum, recovering from a breakdown following Missy's death, moves in with Hayley permanently and steps up

The lesbian biology teacher returns and hooks up with Sam. The biology teacher gets arrested for child abuse and Sam gets arrested for racism. They get transferred to Litchfield minimum (?) security and establish the new OITNB spin-off up the road from max

Cory realises he's bisexual and dates Naveed

There's an epilogue. Kaneez is in a wheelchair, widowed, and is attending Cory and Naveed's wedding. Nasreen is a bridesmaid with a ring on her finger but we don't know who her wife is. Jordan is Best Man and it's a very Catholic wedding.

At the reception we see Nas drinking. Chloe approaches her. "Hey mum-in-law, you haven't seen my mum have ya?" she says. Turns out Emma/Nas' wife is at Sami's grave crying back at the church. Nas visits her and throws her ring at Emma saying "I CAN'T COMPETE WITH A DEAD GUY!!!". Cory and Naveed's marriage is ****ing ennulled because they didn't save themselves til marriage.

The final scene is Nasreen in prison for breaking the Hippocratic Oath or some ****

Slay a tad at me predicting a Nas x Emma romance! Granted Nas kissed Emma's daughter, not Emma herself, but she has her blood so :shrug: I was half right!

Really glad Nas ended up going to Oxford. Not sure why Oxford wasn't made aware of her circumstances anyway, but any excuse to show Kaneez as the amazing woman she is is good by me
Cory.... I know it might sound selfish that I'm beginning for more representation given how good it has been on the whole, but I'm really disappointed we didn't see Cory's bisexuality explored? Straight guys get curious and do sleep with guys as a one-off, sure, but they never addressed the big fat elephant room in the room with Naveed's feelings for him?? Naveed's feelings for Cory were explored with everyone BUT Cory. Given how there are no (out) bisexuals in the show, I was truly expecting them to use Cory as a coming-to-terms storyline with bisexuality. I can't be too annoyed though, since they actually nailed how toxic a student/teacher relationship is and the impact it has (Nas and her teacher was romanticised and poorly handled). It's just a shame they couldn't tie in a storyline which shows Cory addressing his sexuality properly. I can only wonder what the point was by showing Cory had some interest in Naveed? So that it made Naveed's unrequited love all the more angsty?
I'm kinda sad that I wasn't too moved by Missy's ashes being sprinkled into the wind. The story started with Missy and Nas, so it sort of was poignant to just have Nas be the one scattering the ashes, but am I really meant to believe that Hayley and Simone weren't at LEAST standing behind her? It also seems like Nas emptied all her ashes. Wouldn't Missy's mum or sister want to empty some/keep some themselves?
I HATE ALYA. She pulled through a bit at the end but oh my goodness she got on my nerves
I don't think it was meant to be sad but Nas' speech after exams with her classmates would've felt a bit more special if we had actually seen at least 3 other people besides Nas at the table?
So how is Naveed going to be able to go to drama school...?

Although the new series is poised to introduce a new batch of school kids, it will also bring back many of the existing characters, including Kaneez Paracha (Sunetra Sarker), Martin Evershed (Rob James Collier), Mandy Carter (Jo Joyner), Sue Carp (Charlie Hardwick), and Rashid Hyatt (Tony Jayawardeena).

Chloe Voyle (Fern Deacon), Rukhasana Ibrahim (Phoebe Tuffs-Berry), Hayley Booth (Cody Ryan), Razia Paracha (Nazmeen Kauser) and Kacey 'Spud' Gartside (Zara Salim) are also set to return.
