View Full Version : Samuel L. Jackson slams Black Brits for being cast in African American roles

Star Wars: The Force Awakens' John Boyega has hit out at Samuel L Jackson following his comments which criticised the casting of black British actors in roles about African Americans.
The furore began when Jackson, who is currently promoting Kong: Skull Island, spoke to New York radio station Hot 97 about the choice of British actor Daniel Kaluuya for the lead role in Get Out, a horror movie about a black man dealing with racial tensions from the family of his white girlfriend.
He said: "I think it's great [Get Out]'s doing everything it's doing and people are loving it. But
I know the young brother who's in the movie, and he's British.
"So, there are a lot of black British actors in these movies. I tend to wonder what that movie would have been with an American brother who really feels that.
"Daniel grew up in a country where they've been interracial dating for a hundred years
What would a brother from America have made of that role? I'm sure the director helped, but some things are universal, but [not everything]."
Following the comments, Boyega took to Twitter to dismiss Jackson's argument, saying: "Black brits vs African American. A stupid ass conflict we don't have time for."
The actor at the centre of the row, Kaluuya, who you'll recognise from Black Mirror episode '15 Million Merits', has also indirectly acknowledged the comments after he tweeted: "Rise above your struggle."
Elsewhere in the interview Samuel tried to surmise why he thinks so many Brits are getting cast in Hollywood at the moment, with a British Superman, Spider-Man and an array of British actors in the Star Wars and X-Men movies.
Meanwhile, other British actors cast in Hollywood films surrounding race relations include David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King in Selma and Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave.
He said: "[British actors] are cheaper than us, for one thing. They don't cost as much. And [casting agents and directors] think they're better trained, because they're classically trained."
Or maybe they're just better actors and not demanding millions more than their worth?

I can't believe he played Mace Windu when the role could have gone to someone from a galaxy far far away.

I think thatīs very refreshing as opposed to the extreme of quite a bit of the stars getting married in a flash and getting divorced almost as quickly as they married.
Itīs nice to hear that some people have had it so good that they have lasted all that time together.

Yeah definitely, Tom Hanks has been with his wife a long time too, it's a sign that they still have their feet on the ground some bit i think

I do like him as an actor, i think he is one of the best ever.
And without him in it, it would have been much worse than it was.
What did you think of Deep Blue Sea btw?

Also in regards of Thor they couldnīt have casted more perfectly for that part than Chris Hemsworth.
I forgot that black British actors could only have been either classically trained RADA graduates or best friends with Damilola Taylor, silly me

How? Cause what i have seen, itīs repeated on UK channels like every few months or so
You should it has Patrick Jane, Mr. L. Jackson, LL Cool J, that woman who plays Tony Sopranos sister to name a few. But itīs a shark movie, so you know there is some little Jaws action there. Butīs itīs a fine 2 1/2 star movie, i think.

of all the mediocre British actors plaguing Hollywood at the moment, John Boyega and Daniel Kaluuya are not the problem.
Have a word with Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddlestone and (much as I fancy him) Andrew Garfield first.

What a silly thing.
So actors need to have gone through what their characters are portraying now?
So Brie Larson must have experienced a sexual assault to have been cast in the Room? No actors can play other nationalities or use different accents?
Idiot.
Wow.

I think he means goes to school at all. I'd say most brit actors trained in some kind of college or school even if they didn't go to a big posh drama school. Whereas Americans get a lot more people just deciding to be actors, getting agents and going to auditions whereas Brits have a reputation for being trained and having a discipline.
I'd agree with them 15-20 years ago but since the rise of the reality stars it's the same all over. You get people becoming movie stars and TV stars overnight just because they want fame.
