Intrinsically, gold has a low growth yield and so to the western world, its not a good tangible asset. Lending money into the economy has a far better growth yield and so bailing out banks who then bail out the economy is a way to recovery.

Why ever would I try and defend Blair and Brown? I'm just putting some facts straight because I get sick of hearing nonsense about the gold reserve. When Blair was our PM I was a firm Lib Dem supporter. I used every excuse to slate the NL but what I didn't do was use trumped up conspiracy theories that were being bled out to a somewhat naive British public by the Tories.
