View Full Version : Passport to siphoning off more public money?

Disgusting waste of money!

'The Home Office has confirmed it will spend almost £500m redesigning passports for British citizens once the UK has left the European Union, paving the way for a possible return to the old dark-blue style.

Since the referendum last June, some pro-Brexit MPs and campaign groups have called for the return of blue passports to replace the current burgundy ones carried by all EU citizens.

The Home Office has invited businesses to apply for the £490m redesign project, with the new passports set to come into existence in 2019 – although it stressed this is because the current contract is ending, rather than because of the exit process.

Well it's not like we've never had to redesign our passports before, we had to do it when we joined the EU and so we have to do it now that we're leaving. If the current contract expires in 2019 then they would get a new design regardless

How in this age of 'austerity' can they ringfence 490m for it though? :/

It’s likely that all old passports will continue to be valid until they come to be renewed, at which point we will presumably be given one with a new design.

From the Independant, wouldn't this be a rational response, throw it out to the public to come up with a design, have an online poll and free post for the non computer literate, cost....pretty much zero...

Your first comment to me was about playing virtual tycoon for too long as though my input was invalid and trying to patronise me.

I conduct a discussion in the manner of the thread starter.

I'd also use the phrase "knickers in a twist" to any sex so don't pull the sexist crap on me either.

And yet my response still stands.
"although it stressed this is because the current contract is ending, rather than because of the exit process." - So not a Brexit issue.

"The Home Office stressed that Brits will only have to pay for a new passport when their old one expires" - So not much waste considering it gets changed when they require a new one anyway.

And still no clarification on actual costs. Just "£500mill" thrown into headlines. So I still think it's a big fuss over nothing.

The point is people with current passports shouldn't have to change until they are due to expire or unless they really want to and are willing to pay? I think it will be easy enough for customs officials to direct UK citizens with EU passports to the non EU queue in 2 years time rather than wasting money renewing them?

Blue reportedly symbolises "the new world" with 15 of the Caribbean countries opting for it.

Further south down the South American continent, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay also use a blue passport – the cover symbolising the connection with the Mercosur trade union.

The United States are said to be changing their passport colour again in the near future
Venezuela, on the other hand, still uses a red passport, a throwback from its time in the Andean Community.

The most famous blue passport in the world though has to be the one issued to US citizens – but this was changed to blue as recently in 1976.

Denver
03-04-2017, 12:58 PM
As any Brit knows, when it comes to UK passports, deep red is the colour of choice.

It also happens to be the most common passport colour with all members of the European Union, apart from Croatia, sporting a burgundy hue.

The Economist called this a "branding exercise" - though there's no word on whether we'll stay a nice shade of EU red once we've left it.

It's not just EU states either. The Andean Community (also known for past EU-ambitions) of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru also has burgundy passports.

Switzerland matches its passport colour to its bright, red flag.

The Welsh dragon does not appear on the flag because when the first Union Flag was created in 1606, Wales was already united with England from the 13th century. This meant that Wales a Principality instead of a Kingdom and as such could not be included.

Plus £80? It'll just be the one charge of £74-80 to renew it surely?

Need it renewed next year. Guessing new ones will be after that. So may have to have 2 updates in a year :bored:
