Simon Cowell hopes to press ahead with plans to alter voting on Britain’s Got Talent to extend the use of the golden buzzer.
He wants to introduce it to each of the five live semi-finals, letting the judges plus Ant and Dec buzz favourite acts straight into the finals.
Currently only available in the auditions, Simon used his golden buzzer to send Sarah Ikumu, 15, to the semis, as Alesha Dixon, 38, did for Just Us. David Walliams, 45, and Amanda Holden , 46, are yet to use theirs.
A source said: “The golden buzzer is one of the favourite elements in the audition shows.
“The atmosphere when it is pressed is incredible. This will give the judges and Ant and Dec the chance to guarantee their favourite acts get a spot in the final.”
Cowell, 57, is keen to consolidate the huge ratings for the ITV show, which topped nine million last week.
Under the present voting system for the semis, the act that polls the most in the public phone vote goes straight to the final. The judges then choose from the second and third most popular acts for a place.
If the golden buzzer plan goes ahead, the judges and public will have a 50-50 say. A source said: “Producers believe it would make the five, live semis even more exciting.”
BGT last weekend drew the biggest TV audience of the year, at 9.2 million, overtaking an episode of BBC1’s Call the Midwife , which drew 9.1 million.
