I've already posted on this on the GE thread.

It is a bad interview but the figures she got tied up with are right,I got what she was meaning.

10,000 more Police officers, her £80 million figure being average yearly cost.
She said this would be done over 4 years so that comes to just over £300 million as to costing.
Which was put out by Labour anyway far earlier.

All costed and being paid by capital gains tax changes.

She got badly in a mess but was not being deceitful.
I really do feel she needs to get on top of info better however.
It came over badly but the figures as to cost,Labour has presented fully and correctly.

It boils down to whether voters want more Police or not,if not well they will likely get none from the Cons.

It's good too to have a specific thread on issues as well, sometimes a general all purpose thread makes issues get lost at times.
Good to have both going I think anyway.

She has the info in front of her by the sounds of it, she was wrong to go into an interview with LBC without cast iron figures or any figures tbh, they don't need to yet before the manifesto so why set yourself up for a fall with LBC of all stations! It kind of came together in the end. but it will give the 'strong and stable' bots ammo :/

...But you can't say that it's not a good plan. She's just piss poor when it comes to presenting it.

Ah good at least there is a record of her not being railroaded by some journo spiv :)

I still don't see why they had to rush out these figures before the manifesto, all this has done is take the heat off mays car crash interview with marr :/

Yes some want more Police
Diane Abbot was on the phone
talking to LBC, but got her numbers wrong.
Now the Radio clip is on Every News.

Forget the Police
its all about her now

The Police want extra officers and having to deal with increased threats if terrorism such as the recent one or worse,I think the Police numbers do matter.

Especially after the years of really bad feeling between the Police and Theresa May while she was Home Secretary, where she really dismayed them with her bad attitude.

Diana Abbot had a bad interview, one out ofa good few that morning.
She should have had the figures spot on but the figures were made public by Labour earlier anyway.

There will it seems be no chance of the Cons having interviews like Abbots to get ridiculed for, since they are saying virtually nothing about anything but brexit, revealing extremely little and only criticising every other Party's plans, not putting any real detail of their own up for scrutiny.

No wonder this PM is running scared of any 'live' debates.
Her having to think and answer unrehearsed 'live' would likely open up far more worrying, interesting and revealing responses than Abbotts interview.

Abbot should have done better and had the exact info to hand.
She needs to make sure she is prepared with full costings for any future interviews.

TBH I agree. Even though I think people are generally sort of crappy, I do have a general level of trust in the public to - for the mostpart - protect and defend each other from actual harm and I feel like there would be far less need for increased police presence if there was simply a greater sense of community. I can't see "more authority figures roaming around" as ever being a good end goal, basically.

Especially - as you say - when NHS staffing levels and school budgets are in MASSIVE crises at the moment. Given that all of the pay levels are similar... We need 10,000 nurses or 10,000 teachers far more urgently than we need more police.

Why not recruit them all? We won't be the ones paying for it, the money brokers will. Its called government debt, something that isn't well understood.

I don’t particularly like Abbot and I can’t say I didn’t enjoy her uncomfortable uttering's but then I know her to be a sharp, quick tempered and intolerant woman.

She had to give that dangerous question an answer but all she had to say was, “ We won’t be paying for it because its just money and we can issue that as debt, the same as everything else the government pays for. We need to issue more debt if we want our economy to grow."

I suspect that simple answer would of bemused and even annoyed a lot of people but it was the straight answer and the no, flip-flopping around truth.

She repeated the figures on another interview and the figures make sense, I think that all the mileage that can be gotten out 2 mins of a bad radio interview. It detracts from the catastrophic incident that occurs every time may sets foot in front of a camera.

She did get them right earlier.

She had the figures in her head, she got them muddled that's all.
She shouldn't have got them muddled and needs to be careful,as all the always perfect people who never get mixed up ever, will always just Jump on her and any other individual that dares make a mistake.

Was she muddled when she said that there was "no problem with black people in Britain, the problem is white people"? What about the fact that she sent her own son to a private school while advocating state schools for the rest of us who aren't quite so equal?

If Labour won, Dianna Abbott would be in charge of the police, immigration and the security services. Heaven help us all.

I think politics and politicians of all Parties have hypocritical elements as to what they advocate for others in relation to supported policies, which are opposites to what they'd do and want for themselves.

This is a thread about her getting in an unnecessary muddle over costing figures.
Which she didn't need to as she had already given the right figures elsewhere, just also as Labour itself had already published said figures too.

I don't actually agree with Diane much on anything, then again we had a Home Secretary from 2010 to late 2016 that I never agreed with at all.
At least Abbott says what she thinks and usually sticks to it unlike another lady whose word is meaningless as to having any worth to it at all.

All politicians lie because they are human. Diane Abbott has made it into an artform. She seems to be an advocate of the 'don't do as i do, do as I say' school of politics. She was unprepared for the interview and that's unforgivable. It's her job and there's a general election in a few weeks. I remember Chloe Smith getting a savaging from Paxman... it was embarrassing, and she was rather thrown to the wolves, but she should have been prepared otherwise you look like a plank.

To think that this woman could be in charge of the security of our country makes me nervous.

As to your last point I feel like exactly the same about the woman who is currently in charge of the whole country.
That worries me far more as to all she has so far said and done, than one pathetic interview of Abbotts.

I wouldn't be that sure even if this lot get turfed out, that in a new coalition govt led by Labour that Abbott would in fact be Home Secretary anyway.

Your post is as ever a good read and you are right, now particularly she has to be well versed in all her brief for interviews
