View Full Version : Am going to an island

Sticks
09-04-2007, 03:20 PM
This Friday I will be travelling by train to North Devon, where on Saturday I am due to go by ship to Lundy Island for two weeks. I am informed that there is no internet access available. I also discovered that there is no coverage for my mobiles in that part of the world, so using my mobile as a make shift modem will not work either.

So when I drop off the face of the Earth, that is where I am.

If anyone cares to drop by the Island between 14 April and 18 April, I am staying at the Old Light Cottage.

Supposedly, unless the weather and Sea conditions say otherwise.

In the past I have gone from Bideford, Appledor Heliport or Clovelly

If I can go from Ilfracombe I complete the set.

The weather has turned today

This is how bad it was this morning. I had to battle elements to get in here, and yesterday we had three unplanned power outages. The usual engineer is on leave

Sticks
24-04-2007, 08:10 AM
Well the bad weather continues, just after someone made a coment about "lovely weather":cloud:

Walking down I could see all the sheep sheltering against the wall

Sticks
24-04-2007, 08:13 AM
More sheep looking back at the Old Light

This weather just shows why building a lighthouse on the top of the island was such a bad idea. The locals warned the Bristol businessment when they started in 1819, paying £36,000, but they were ignored.

The Old Light was decommisioned in 1898 with the construction of two lower lights at the north and south ends of the island.

26-04-2007, 08:43 AM
Well this morning, I had a go at walking northwards

Sticks
26-04-2007, 08:46 AM
I got to here, which is called the Earthquake zone

Aparrently in the 1700's there was a major earthquake in Lisbon, and one result was the opening of this fissure.

Sticks
26-04-2007, 08:47 AM
I got to this feature known as the Cheeses just south fo the Halfway wall.

Sticks
26-04-2007, 08:52 AM
Unfortunately at halfway wall was a group of ferral goats, with young present. And as I was being eyed by the billy goats it was considered that the only safe thing to do was abandon the walk, so I went along the halfway wall to the east of the Island and finally relocated the remains of a World War II German bomber that crash landed on the island. It was torched by the crew to avoid it falling into British hands.

Sticks
26-04-2007, 08:53 AM
I then trapsed back to Old Light Cottage, via Pondsbury, the larges fresh water body on the Island.

Sticks
26-04-2007, 08:57 AM
At Quarter wall things turned dicey as I had to get past the Lundy Ponies. They all started to watch me, and some started walking towards me. (A previous year they charged at me). There should have been the strains of Moricone's music (e.g The good the bad and the ugly)

I eventually got past them and through the gate.

I think they would win on points and cuteness.

Tried to get to the tavern and set up, but the room was locked so have had to go into the beer garden, on battery at the mercy of the threatening rain clouds.

I saw a dead lamb today

most upsetting, had to report it to the farmer.

Wireless connection in the tavern hopeless, so having to freeze in the beer garden.

Well things have got of to a bad start. It took this picture this morning of my luggage outside the property. Officially it had to be outside by 09:30 and we vacate the property by 10:00. Now I was not sure what time they would collect it, although they said we could leave it and they would collect it. It was just after 08:00 and I thought I would be helpful and take it down myself. I thought the possible break points were the handle on the side, due to deformation and the wheels, trundling on a dirt track.

I was passing through a sheep field between the south west field and the camp site. I was alternatively using the handle on the top, near the extendable drag handle and the side handle. With in site of the gate to the camp site and near the end of the trek, the handle on the top of the suitcase broke.

Even if you super-glued it, it would never hold. It is going to be a challenge getting it back to Newcastle, and with my expedition hat and its turquoise colour it was it's own cartoon character. If only I had done what everyone else does and left it for pick up. It is now in the crates awaiting loading on to MS Oldenburg.

:bawling:

So may not be around for a couple of weeks.

I have established that there is no longer any WiFi available in the tavern on Lundy. If my dongle does not work on Lundy Island, and according to the coverage map on the website of the provider, it won't, It looks like I will be away from this board for a while.

I may have limited internet access via my mobile, but it will not be able to access this forum.

OK in 2007 and 2008 I was allowed to use the Lundy Island WiFi

Since them, due to the number of visitors using it causing problems for Lundy Island Staff, visitors were no longer permitted to use it.

I was therefore unable to use it this time.

I did have a dongle with me, but it proved unreliable as it was in a technical dead zone with atmospherics allowing only brief and barely usable connections.

My mobile phone only afforded me limited access to twitter, hotmail and Facebook

I was not able to access TIBB during my stay this time on Lundy
