A warning to just be careful, with these energy drinks that the youngsters are all addicted to now, and the amount of coffee shops we now have in our city's.

Omg that's so sad. :(

He only had 3 drinks as well. :worry:

He shouldn't have drunk all of that so close together as it's overwhelming his body which is trying to digest it all.

It's sad though, hopefully his family are alright.

Tragic stuff.

I read the article and it says, ""up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults". That is the equivalent of around four cups of coffee".

I have three cups of coffee before I head out to work in the morning. On the way to work I stop off and buy a large Americana with an extra shot and then drink another half dozen whilst at work. Once home I'll probably down two or three more coffees before going to bed. I'm probably swallowing around. 3 times the considered safe dose

Looks like I need to be buying decaf :(

Some people are more caffeine-sensitive than others... if you've been consuming that amount regularly with no issues, it's highly unlikely that it would suddenly be a problem. Also;

Schoolmates at Spring Hill High had said the 16-year-old had "chugged" the large bottle of energy drink before becoming ill during a lesson.

The final drink is believed to have caused the cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) which led to his death an hour later.

Stressing that it was the speed at which the caffeine was drunk rather than the actual amount, the coroner said "the same amount of caffeine on another day may have been right"

This is the important part, really. My guess would be that he downed one of those large 750ml bottles of Red Bull style energy drink, and it's the speed of consumption that's the problem rather than the amount... his body simply couldn't process it quickly enough.

There's also very little testing done on how these drinks affect non-adults and they're strongly marketed at teens, which is a problem.

:umm2: so nearly 15 cups of coffee a day, that's a crazy amount. How do you ever sleep

I worked with a guy once who literally chained them, I've never seen anything like it. I would say roughly one every half hour, and we worked 12-hour shifts, so 20+ cups a day :umm2:. That's not including (I assume) whatever he had at home before and after work. Instant, at least, which only has about half the caffeine content of fresh brewed coffee, but still. He would offer to make me one every time he went and I would accept a lot... probably had 8 to 10 cups in a shift if I was working with him... and I was wired to the moon on that! In fact, working with him is what took me from "enjoying the occasional cup of coffee" to full blown "I feel like a zombie until caffeinated" addiction.

Oh and for me, also, coffee doesn't stop e from sleeping at night. I think I was put together backwards... because alcohol DOES stop me from sleeping .

My daughters boyfriends mate at uni is on medication for life after being hospitalised due to drinking too much of a famous brand energy drink. He could actually see his heart pounding in his chest.

this is scary
i remember when i was at school it was common for us to go to tescos and buy the smart price energy can (the red bull rip offs) and see how many we could down and then laugh at the side effects.
could have happened to us.
kids need to stay safe, espically in exam times like now.

I think it was more that he drank that amount in such a short space of time.

As the article suggests, him drinking that same amount more slowly could've made the difference.

Yeah I need to start brewing more decaf. I always have a glass of water with my coffee so that could make a difference.

When I stopped smoking I started using patches and I ended up getting nicotine poisoning. Apparently some people, including me, will absorb too much nicotine into the blood from those things.

Those drinks are pretty dangerous, not just the amount of caffine they have, but sugar too. They always make my skin feel weird when I smell it. Then again, I used to drink 3 Irn Bru a day, I finally kicked that and no longer drink any kind of fizzy drink.

three in two hours doesn't sound like a lot

a guy in my uni accommodation gets through an unusually large number of fizzy drinks every day and he's still alive (for now :worry:)

I don't think it can have been as simple as 3 normal cans of red bull though. The article says he had at least 500mg of caffeine... a can of red bull is under 80mg so three would only be 240mg. I think at least one of the drinks (the one he chugged) must have been one of those cheapo 750ml bottles (the equivalent of 3 cans on its own).

I normally drink espresso when I'm at home. I can buy decaf beans though don't know how they will taste.

I once drank four while doing an all night gaming sesh.Jittery as feck and pissing like a racehorse.
Caffeine overdose is not a nice feeling.

At one point when i used to go out i'd drink ALOT of double vodka Redbulls.Always woke up with anxiety and have to go to work.
Bad stuff.

I'm so confused why Mountain Dew is an energy drink now anyway
They took the energy label away, they used to have it but like
Is there any need to have that much energy in a drink like that like they should've reduced it because you see people everywhere just drinking it casually

Yes I had a vodka red bull... incident... at Uni. I had like 20 of the things, probably about 10 cans of red bull. I have NEVER been sick like that in my life, fetal position on the bathroom floor stuff, and then I couldn't sleep more than 15 - 20 minutes at a time without waking up with a horrible jolt. For 4 days. Horrendous. When it eventually wore off I slept for about 20 hours straight.

I think this too, if it exceeds a certain amount of caffeine it should be age restricted to like 13+ and have a quantity restriction
Like either that or put warnings on the damn things too
