View Full Version : Theresa May 'worships' with pastor who campaigned against gay equality

Theresa May has been criticised for "worshipping" with a clergyman who has a history of anti-LGBT campaigning.
The Prime Minister met with members of the Jesus House Church, which she described as “one of the most lively growing churches in the UK” over the weekend.
Her official Twitter account showed her meeting members of the congregation. Ms May also met with Pastor Agu Irukwu, who campaigned against the Equality Act and the legalisation of gay marriage.
She participated in a Q&A session with Mr Irukwu, who became a senior pastor in 1994, and Jesus House said she took part in worship.
LGBT activists expressed shock at the Prime Minister’s visit, made just ten days before the general election.
"Theresa May's decision to visit pastor Agu Irukwu and Jesus House is an insult to the whole LGBT community but especially to black LBGT people," said veteran LGBT rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.
"The pastor has a long history opposing LGBT equality, including opposition to same-sex civil marriage and to laws protecting LGBT people against discrimination.
"His church has been involved in exorcisms of gay people in the belief that they are possessed by demons. It's parent church in Nigeria backed the draconian anti-laws passed in 2014, which are some of the harshest in the world. Jesus House preaches against the human rights of LGBT people in the UK and Africa.
"These teachings fuel prejudice. They contribute to self-hatred and mental ill-health in black African LGBT communities."
He added: “The Prime Minister is wrong to fete and appease homophobic Christian extremists."
Dr Christian Jessen, a television presenter, said: “Oh dear. Jesus House is a bastion of ugly homophobia, run by Agu Irukeu who strongly opposes homosexual equality.
“Bad move by the Tories.”
Jesus House, which was founded in Nigeria and in the UK mainly caters to a black British congregation in Brent, west London, has defended itself from what it claimed were “misinformed comments”.

There is no statute of limitations on murder because it is a heinous crime - you can't excuse association with mass murderers because it was twenty years' ago.
Putting it mildly that is weak. :nono:

I myself have always felt she has reservations and hides homophobic thinking.
This visit to such a dubious church like this one, only fuels my dislike and strong distrust in this liar and deceptive woman.

Theresa May supports anything that will solidify her grip on power which is why she u-turns on everything. She was against gay rights until it benefited her to vote for it.
She's a ****ing car wreck but people will be all like 'I don't know what she stands for but she seems strong and stable and she wants to get rid of all the immigrants so I'm gonna vote for her innit?'

The sad thing is that is true especially with more ongoing plans to reform the entitlements criteria for the sick and disabled.
Things she may have struggled to get through with a smaller majority.

For a while now I've wondered if May is trying to emulate the late Princess Diana. She dresses like Diana, she wears her hair in a similar fashion and she does this coy dropping of the head when she's walking.

Did anyone ask any questions about Muslim Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan? Becaue I think you'll find that Muslims are completely anti-gay. Wasn't an issue though until a Christian became a target. People are allowed not to agree with gay marriage, that is their right. Just like gay people have rights and Muslim people have rights.
Looking forward to thought-crime becoming a thing under Labour...

The only thing they have in common is that both were/are tall.
Could be a reason why they both dip their heads a bit, could just be coincidence but I very much doubt Theresa May would try to emulate anybody.

I have plenty of Muslim friends who support gay rights & gay marriage, it's pretty concerning you are able to make such a generaliseable blanket statement like that

Did Teresa May? I can't say that I've heard either way.
Come to that why is she in any way responsible for the views or voting principles of someone she worships with, is she even party to how he votes? When he meets you does he shake your hand and say "btw, I voted against gay marriage." It all seems rather daft.

Would a Jewish Major of voted in favour of gay marriage? I understand that Jewish law doesn't forbid homosexuality but it does forbid action on erotic urges. He/she can be an observant homosexual Jew but its forbidden to act out that inclination.

I think you'll find if you read up on it that most religious doctrine is anti gay and anti women. It was written at a time when people were ignorant, women were property and being gay was taboo (unless you were Caligula and could do what and who you liked).
The problem is in an age when we think we are enlightened, lots of people still find it hard to go against those doctrine they have been taught.

Can't say I see comparison to Princess Diana.
I'm fairly sure Princess Diana would be horrified.
Mrs May strides about clumsily and has in my view very bad dress sense.
Princess Diana was full of style.

Very few religions accept homosexuality yet many of their followers do not share the same views on the matter. I think it's wrong to try to smear someone based purely on their religion while defending/ignoring the fact that Theresa May has actually opposed Gay Rights in the past and has a very spotty history when it comes to LGBT support, she'd probably still hold anti-gay views if she thought it would help her numbers.

it's concerning? Were you concerned when the leader of the Lib Dems was continually questioned about whether he thought gay sex was a sin because he's a Christian? Why do people find it acceptable for Christians to be asked these questions and castigated for for thoughts they may have, when those same people will leap to the defence of Muslims, who are generally quite clear about their thoughts on being gay.

Yeah... I'm sure lots and lots of Muslim families have a laid-back, devil-may-care attitude to their sons being gay.

what i find funny is that in 2015 she stated that it i 'impossible to build a cohesive society' where there is any immigration and here she is walking around a church, praising them and shaking hands. This church full of people and families that migrated to this country! :joker:

Course it matters, every comment/opinion to do with this years election is relevant especially 8 days before the country votes. It shows that she's a contradictory idiot that flip flops with almost everything.
On the topic of her visit to the church im not surprised she called them fantastic. This was the same woman that in 2000 voted against the 'promotion' of LGBTQ in the local government and schools. The same woman that voted against gay couples adopting a child, TWICE, both in 2001 and 2002. I don't respect her for her opinions on IVF rights either, saying you need a male role model is ridiculous and therefore completely downright disgusting towards lesbians that want to raise a family together without thee involvement of a man, she voted against this in 2008.

First of all, i haven't said Labour have not made mistakes.
Secondly 'Mutha T' (:yuk:) is the witch we are talking about right now, not Corbyn or the labour party. ALL political parties have made mistakes, mistakes are a part of politics, no political party is perfect by any means. With that said the mistakes done by this tory government have been utterly disgusting to the majority of this country.
