New rules to be implemented next year will force pornography sites to prove their visitors are over 18 by using age checkers.

The move by Theresa May's government is part of the recently-passed Digital Economy Act, the first sections of which were just laid out before MPs.

Sites which can be accessed in the UK will be required to install age verification systems by April 2018. This may involve sites asking people to enter credit card details, in order to prove they are over 18.

I agree. Maybe 8 years old is young enough to supervise but to expect parents to be able to control what 11/12/13/14 year olds look at online at all times at all places is unrealistic. Also worth remembering that a lot of kids are much more tech savvy than their parents and are able to view things and bypass safeguards with an ease that the parents would never think possible.

Anyine who willingly gives their credit card deets to a free porn site - requirement or not - is BEGGING to have that card emptied overnight. Card fraud will go through the roof. It's also essentially "putting your name to the porn you watch" and taking away the anonymity, leaving these sites wide open to hacking and viewers open to blackmail. Mr Company CEO doesn't want people finding out he enjoys the occasional bukkake video. NO ONE wants Betty from the church finding out that they are an eFukt regular :joker:.

All of this is a massive, and needless, invasion of privacy. People have been looking at Internet porn for two decades at this point... And as far as I know, by some miracle, no one has imploded yet. Today's 21 year olds who grew up with the Internet are not traumatised sexual deviants. They're making a problem where there isn't one.

Betting sites don't tend to ask for ID until you try to withdraw. They will take any credit card and such, and take mountains of cash from that card without ever asking you to prove its yours. Its only when you try to get a withdrawal that they start asking for 500 pieces of ID plus a photo of you on the moon to actually pay out.

Its really crap when you think about it properly.

No they shouldn't. I know everyone of 16 and 17 thinks they're very sophisticated and mature but once you get to 25 you'll suddenly realise what a kid you were at 16-17 years.

The Internet is in its infancy. There's going to be a lot of legislation in the future that people will complain is restricting their access to information. The truth is, no one is entitled to access everything.

That's all in the process of changing actually, for the main sites anyway, most should be shifting to requiring passport or driving license at sign-up. Can't speak for the dodgier sites but... well... if you sign up to a dodgy site expect dodgy behaviour :joker:.

Good as its ridiculous. I am talking like 16 years back now, and I know it still goes on. When I was a young teen I used my mothers credit card on william hill. managed to spend a few hundred (mismatched name and everything)..made back what I had lost and then tried to withdraw to break even...and all of a sudden problems and ID checks :laugh: They couldn 't refund the amounts that had been deposited...nor could they pay out what I won. So basically, anyone can use any card with no checks and they don't give a crap until you try to get something back, or even break even.

I think that shielding them from sex without a foreknowledge and understanding of love and respect within a relationship... and also that shielding them from unrealistic expectations that porn can give you at a very young age... then yes, I think it might make a difference.

Only just seen this thread, and I think this is an acceptable legislation to put forward.

I understand it begs the question as to how much privacy and freedom we have online, but I honestly think it's a good idea to protect young people from being exposed to porn sites. Some porn websites should be banned completely tbqh.
