Can You understand why being called racist for mispronouncing someones name might make you a bit angry.
Big Brother lecturing like this is unbelievable.BB is a scumbag who's main aim is to sew division and film the petty bickering.I remember the Jade Goody/Shilpa controversy that Endemol milked for all it was worth.

Yeah it was Karthick who brought up the race card and BB should not have pandered to it.Fair enough mispronouncing somebody's name is annoying but to bring racism into it just undermines actual racism.BB should know better.

The definition of what is racist is becoming so all consuming it's gettin' ridiculous.
I've always thought shows like BB are also involved in "nudging" the public in terms of their atitudes into the politically correct consensus we now find ourselves.
It's all about getting someone to say something a bit off colour and then punishing them and publicly shaming them.

Mispronouncing someone's name is not racist. Everyone at work spells my name wrong. I never once thought it was racist.

sadly calling someone a racist is now used as an insult more than anything

It's understandable mispronouncing it for the first few times if it's an unusual/uncommon name, but after that it's wrong and disrespectful.

Paul is not racist at all. He just has a temper and sometimes he can control it. Him and Karthik don't like each other, they will always clash.

How many times does it have to be explained to ignorant people that this wasn't a mispronunciation of a name. It was a deliberate changing of someone's name, totally different thing altogether.
I didn't think it was racist initially but it certainly shows a total lack of respect.
And after Paul going off on another one at Karthik last night saying if he brought up the racist card again he would regret it I can totally see why BB called him to the diary room.
They were more or less telling him that Karthik had a right to be offended. And he did.

It wasn't an accidental mispronunciation or a mistake. Paul purposefully set out to antagonise him by not only getting his name completely wrong on multiple occasions but doing so by referring to him as a country that's not likely got anything to do with his heritage other than he shares similar brown skin to the majority of people that live there.
It's no different to the racism that Jade Goody and her odious mother put out towards Shilpa.

Paul didn't call him quatar. He said Kartha. Not the same thing. And Sam also called him that, but. Karthik didn't call him racist.

Paul didn't even say that though. He was saying "Kathar" as a joke because they'd been accidentally getting his name wrong earlier.Race literally had nothing to do with it intil Karthick brought it up.He pulled the race card to try and get Paul into trouble.

he may have been antagonising him, but i don't honestly see how one word that isn't an identified racial slur in its own right could be racist. Don't get me wrong, i think Paul is an odious twat and he could well be racist, but I think its a leap too far off of one word.
Edit, just to add what Jade said was commonly used by racists and therefore can't be viewed the same

And it was explained last night by Karthik and BB to Paul and to everyone else that the problem was Paul REPEATEDLY SHOUTED the Quatar at him, doesn't matter what way you spell it Vanessa, it sounds the same.

Okay, you obviously hang around in different circles to me. NEVER heard it used that way in my life.
Not that I'm saying Jade was in the right, I'm certainly not but it certainly isn't a racist term where I come from.

Paul mispronounced Karthik's name on purpose to demean him, isloate him, and put him down. It had malicious intent. Paul also mentioned many times that Karthik is not British and doesn't understand out British ways etc. Paul even suggested that Karthik is ashamed being Indian. It was borderline racist.

BB can't do right from wrong in these situations, I suspect they had a few complaints from the usual idiots and had to be seen to do something.

If you're intentionally continuously mispronouncing a "foreign" name for the sake of inane attempts at humour, there are of course going to be unsavory connotations there.
I don't think Paul is racist but he absolutely is a juvenile, obnoxious, unfunny prat.

Well said. This was not an innocent mispronunciation. Paul was purposefully doing it to and ramped it up when he saw it was annoying Karthik.
It is understandable that Karthik could have perceived it as racist because he could see that Paul was doing it on purpose and, more importantly, the fake name that Paul was using sounded like Qatar which is an east indian airline.
Also, Karthik gave Paul the benefit of the doubt when he said he didn't realize it was the airline and he dropped the whole thing. It was Paul that can't let go and I think it was good of BB to straighten him up about it to avoid further conflict between the two of them.

In my opinion paul did orginally not intend for it to be offensive or racist, but he kept dragging it on and bringing the topic of being called racist up, and therefore it started to seem like he was getting that defensive because he actually is racist. I dont think he was being though but the only one now making it seem like he may be is himself

There is nothing racist about saying Kafar. Its plain ignorant and rude, not racist.
Karthik misheard Danan and thought he said Qatar, this would have been racist.
Danan failed to understand Karthiks very reasonable perspective several times, either because he's ignorant, rude, or stupid idk - Big Brother explained it to him like an adult explaining something to a toddler to get Danan to shut up because everytime he brought it up he made it worse with his outrage at Karthiks reasonable perspective that he could not grasp.
The discussion is over, Danan understands that he was a twat, and I'm sure Karthik will learn to listen before throwing out more accusations like that
This entire topic just screams faux-outrage. Everything that happened was entirely reasonable.

When being branded a racist can end careers and can cuase eviction you must be pretty stupid to bandy it about on something like this?
Sounds like Karthick uses this "defence" quite a lot

I'm sorry but some of you in this thread are truly ignorant. Big Brother explained it right: it's not just misspelling or mispronouncing sometimes name. It's a white man lacking the deceny to learn a foreign man's name and telling him he should therefore change it. Its incredibly disrespectful and would make anyone feel wrongly inferior. It reminds me of when Jackie would continuously mispronounce Shilpa's name. Just have some basic human decency, ffs.

the key difference is that Paul was intentionally mispronouncing Karthik's name.
K: Are you being racist, Paul? My name is Karthik, dude.
P: Kuthaar?
…
*Karthik explains Qatar/Paul blames Sam/etc* (nb, no one says Karthik's name at all during this minutes-long period)
...
K: What is my name?
P: (annoyed) K! Karthik.
Paul knew Karthik's name the entire time. Karthik was clearly uncomfortable with the "joke" and thought it was racist, but Paul continued to call him "Kuthaar" anyway. The fact that it took Paul three entire minutes to finally say "Karthik" correctly was pretty telling.
If that was the end of it and they made up afterwards, I don't think I would hold it against him. But the next day Paul doubled down (Maybe you should change your name / You don't know what REAL racism is / HOW DARE YOU USE THE RACE CARD). Nah. Paul just outed himself.
Karthik may have been too quick to bring up the "RACE CARDDD!!!!1111" but, if anything, Paul's behavior during that incident and the entire following day vindicated Karthik totally.
