If you're unsure how this works, please see last year's thread HERE. (http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/forums/topic-308967-tibbs-halloween-countdown-2016--cherry-falls-2000-_tech-movies-amp-video-games.htm)

From 1st October on wards, we watch a different horror film and write a review in the run up to 31st October - Halloween. We score the movie out of 10 and at the end a rank down is completed on the films we watched based on the scores collected overall from all reviewers participating.

The schedule will run as follows:

Sunday 1st October - Circle (2015)
Thursday 5th October - Bone Tomahawk (2016)
Sunday 8th October - Sorority Row (2009)
Thursday 12th October - All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006)
Sunday 15th October - The Void (2016)
Thursday 19th October - The Belko Experiment (2016)
Sunday 22nd October - The Uninvited (2009)
Thursday 26th October - The Mist (2007)
Sunday 29th October - The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
Tuesday 31st October - Halloween (1978)

In total we will be watching 10 films throughout the course of October, every Sunday and Thursday, so please ensure these dates will be convenient for you before you sign up.

Please respond in this thread if you'd like to be a reviewer, as well as suggesting films we can watch throughout October 2017 (preferably films we didn't watch last year).

Suggestions for films will close at 7PM on Friday 22nd September 2017. The vote for the top 10 films will then be opened and will remain open until 7PM on Friday 29th September 2017.

Added a tenth date onto the schedule. For the first time ever we'll be having a film on Halloween.

(Purely and simply because it once again falls on a school/college/work night this year and I seem to recall TiBB being quite active last Halloween so we'll see how it goes)

Suggestions for films will close at 7PM on Friday 22nd September 2017. The vote for the top 10 films will then be opened and will remain open until 7PM on Friday 29th September 2017.

I enjoyed it... although there isn't really a lot I can think of to say tbh. It was a good concept, it played out well, there were some funny moments which worked really well... it was kinda basic, but yeah I enjoyed it.
I was pleasantly surprised that the child and mother/baby died (a sentence I never thought I'd say) at the end, only because I wasn't expecting it and I thought the film was going to cop out by having them both survive somehow, I thought that was the way it was heading. So having him turn on them and realising he had it planned all along was a good twist. I'm not entirely sure what happened after that though, like why was the unborn child suddenly in a tie, and at the very very end why did he join another group of people?
Oh I liked the twist with the married couple too.
I do think that they could have explained, well everything behind it, the reasons behind it etc and the aliens, but I suppose that the aliens weren't really meant to be a focus and it was about the people and their decisions etc so perhaps it would have been distracting or felt tacked on if they had. On the other hand without any sort of explanation it comes across as just a plot device that could have been anything so it cheapens that aspect of it a bit. Like they should have just had no aliens at all and zero explanation as to what was behind it since that wasn't the focus, rather than a half-hearted attempt. On the other other hand maybe Marc's right and I shouldn't take it seriously and overthink it  (It actually reminded me a bit of the 'Cube' films in that respect - although they're far superior and I wish I'd nominated them for this now I've remembered them.)
Anyway like I said I enjoyed it, but honestly I'll probably forget all about it in a week and I don't think I'd feel any interest in watching it again... although if Big Brother steals the concept for the next series I might be on board with that ('Extreme Annihilation Week' is coming)

I'll give it 7/10

Circle Review

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CZp3zW8WIAA1DGu.jpg

Having seen this once before I knew I was not a fan but gave it a second watch to see if somehow my opinion would improve, it didn't at all - infact I disliked the movie even more.

We start off not really knowing what is going on and I think that is when the movie is at it's best, learning what is happening as the characters do. Now I mention the characters but the movie went from one annoying character to another, first the ageist guy who wanted to kill all the over 60's to the racist cop and racist black guy and then onto a snobby business man and the atheist who tried to convince the group to kill a woman for having breast implants. It really felt like a conveyor of arseholes each taking their turn to spew bile, with the most annoying being a banker in golf attire trying to encourage the death of a 10 year old.

I think the only characters I liked were the amputee, the cancer survivor, the bilingual woman, the couple having an affair and the pregnant woman. Another aspect I quite liked was exploring lesser characters but then as you got to know them they died too quick. The fake couple twist was good but it's explanation was messy, nobody would willingly vote for a mans wife to die but they are more than happy to kill a pregnant woman and a little kid? Hmmm sure jan.

The ending was terrible too, sure it is shocking and I never suspected the guy was double crossing them until the last moment but it is a massively unsatisfactory one for me and the very end after he wins left more questions than answers.

All in all I think it was a good concept with a real mixed bag of characters but far too many unlikeable ones to fully see me caring who lived after a while and the ending was rushed, I am all for open endings but this one just felt very lazy.

4/10

I'll give it 7/10

The bloke was unaware he was still playing against the baby, so they both received zero votes in the last round (presumably the babys dial was just directed at random circles all along) so the guy voted the babys circle once he realised he had to break the tie.

I honestly love this movie. Like could be my favourite movie ever. Its just a good mix of things I enjoy. Its a horror, but quite light-hearted, keeps you guessing, got some Big Brother vibe, and a few mind games.

I think some of the actors let it down, like get better at acting m8s.... and that time when like four died at the same time kinda ruined it a bit, I woulda wanted a bit more character development towards the end... also struggled to believe the person voted to die would actually be voted under actual circumstances. Like that Mexican bloke would never have lasted that long. Also, it leaves quite a lot to the imagination, which is disappointing, the blokes voiceover at the end explaining it all would have been more satisfying.

BUT. I love the format of it, and would defo watch sequels or like a reality-tv-show spinoff, where the winner gets money or something. The idea just really interests me on so many levels. I was also super content that it wasn't the winner everybody would expect, and it was cool to see that there was a lot of kids looking up at the sky at the end of the film, implying that several kids have already won in other ships.

The pro's outweigh the con's for me, I rated this a 10/10 on my imdb account about a year ago, and I'm sticking by that rating.

10/10.

6.5/10

I watched this for the first time a couple weeks back so I didn't bother watching it again for this review, but I didn't really think it was anything that special. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it's not something I would watch again and I don't really have much to say because I can't really remember a lot about the film or the characters, despite the fact I only recently watched it, which I guess says it all.

The concept of having a group of people choosing who lives and who dies is pretty interesting, especially when you're a Big Brother fan. The strategic element of it was fun too and I wouldn't be completely against a version where the housemates are forced to kill each other with the sole survivor being the winner (a la Saw 2) because I'm a sadist. Should have been the twist for the recent BBUS season tbh.

I've been meaning to watch this for ages and never got round to it, so I was pleased to see it made the list. While I did like the concept of the film, it was disappointing and the actual execution failed to meet my expectations. The whole Big Brother US style format of the film is fun to watch all the same but it got soooo repetitive to watch (will the little girl become the next victim or will she not? was literally used like five times throughout) it became tedious at the end. It's a shame because the voting format could've been really intriguing to watch but it was just used a cheap gimmick.

I think another massive flaw in the film is that the characters are nowhere near explored enough. Every character was hollow and only had a few lines of dialogue at most (besides a few such as the guy who survived at the end) so it was really hard to engage with the film because you wasn't really rooting for anyone (I mean I was semi-rooting for 'Stacey' just because she was a blonde slag with breast implants and that's so typically me) and I found myself not really caring about who survived in the end. Plus the extensive list of 'villainous' types of characters in the film because frustrating, it seemed like as soon as one would die another would start to pipe up.

I did enjoy it though and I'm glad I've finally got round to watching it but I wouldn't watch it again. The twist at the end was probably it's saving grace and has definitely given it one or two extra points.

Circle (2015)

A weird film to the say the least and it's been like 15 hours since I watched it. I still can't figure out if I liked it or not. I just found it kind of happened and that was it? There didn't seem to be any intention to convey the fact these people were suffering and about to die and I think characterisation was lost in the over complicated plot and the writing of them discovering how to play the game etc.

Like others have said I do think that there was too many 'villainous' characters and it did seem to feel like as soon as one was killed off in the game another would emerge and say something horrible and have ridiculous values and stuff. Most of the characters were unlikeable but I did like the porn star and the Spanish psychology student. The man and woman who were having an affair was cute too. The husband and wife being fake was a good twist.

The ending twist was spoiled for me months ago but I can imagine it would be good viewing it for the first time without knowing beforehand. I liked the final scene showing that pregnant women/children had won the game on other ships but Eric was the one to win on his ship but I would have liked more explanation and why it was happening etc but I get that they probably wanted to not explain much to keep it effective.

Overall it was an alright film but I think making good realistic characters and interactions was lost in trying to convey the plot on screen. Anyway, I'd give it a 6/10 but I probably wouldn't watch it again.

Circle 2015 Film

i've seen this through YouTube, luckily it had a full movie version on there

a bit of a cheap movie, not really my cup of tea, the ones who love this sort of genre will say it is great, but people like me will just say it is boring

also one location, WTF, 1 hour and 26 minutes and only 1 location

character development is so lacking in this movie, i was like who are these people, i like movies where you get to know the characters a little better

special effects, well the lightning coming out of that circle thingy is quite cool, my only positive thing about this movie

so i will score this movie a 3/10

I think this film is a hit or miss for most people, and having seen this a few months ago and once again last night I love it just the same.

I do agree with some statements that do say too many villanious characters and a real lack in character development, but when that is happening to you you don't really want to be getting to know them as you will probably have to kill them in a few minutes. While most characters were assholes, there were a few people who are quite likeable such as the pornstar and the cancer survivor. It's also a good film if you like pyschological stuff, trying to guess who will die next (and there are quite a few shocking deaths).

Twists are good in the film, especially where we find out the married couple aren't real and at the end when we see Eric tie with the unborn child. I quite like the ending, with all the children and pregnant women from other ships having also won their game, but it could have done with a bit more plot depth and reasons for why it happened/who the aliens are etc. But I like that it makes you think afterwards.

Circle

Ok, lets just get one thing straight - I lowkey LOVE this film. Maybe in an ironic kind of way, but I love it nonetheless.

Technically, it isn't very good, for a number of reasons. You have; poor and unrealistic dialogue (the Spanish woman saying "he's a HUMAN BeINg!!! :joker:), unlikeable characters, and the reasoning behind their decisions never really made much sense. In fact, when first watching it, I really did not like it, since I had been looking forward to it for quite a while and was left feeling pretty dissatisfied.

BUT...but, but, but. When I watched it a few months ago, this time with my friend, I found it weirdly amazing. Idk if I was in a funny mood or whatever but everything about it was a hilarious, highly entertaining MESS. And now whenever I watch the film, I don't take it too seriously and just enjoy it for what it is. To give credit where credit is due, there are some good parts (ones in which the makers of the film intended), such as the actual concept, the constant guessing game that goes on throughout the entirety of it, and the twist at the end, where the young girl and pregnant woman die. Overall, Circle is an enjoyable, yet uneven film which requires the viewer to think what they would do if they found theirself in the character's predicament.

Shout-out to the mute guy (Sam Allardyce?), the cancer lady, the 'bad guy' with the long grey hair and the genius who survived.

I hate myself for watching Bone Tomahawk the other week as it's not that fresh in my mind to write an accurate review on, but at the same time it kinda is as it's too soon for me to watch it again

Oh I definitely agree about Circle having too many unlikable characters.

It's like each character was written to spout something shitty/bigoted just for the sake of getting picked off straight after. It was uncreative and predictable.

Circle: 8/10

So I don't really have a huge amount to say about this movie but I enjoyed it. I think it has a brilliant concept and it's so different from most other films out there. I do think the allegories were quite heavy handed at times but I appreciated what the film was trying to say.

The twist ending with Eric being a disgusting little rapscallion was unexpected which I applaud, but it left me unsatisfied that he survived. And there were other good twists with the fake couple, the sudden #0In4Out quad killing and the unborn baby surviving the mother's death. I also enjoyed theorising about who would live in the end.

As for the lack of explanation for what the aliens wanted, that didn't bother me. Actually, I felt it was pretty much explained when Eric suggested they were observing human nature and values, that seems likely and I don't see any way to get a more concrete answer without one of the aliens walking in and being like "Hey so yeah we did this because____" which obviously would have been absurd.

All in all, an enjoyable movie that I think offers a much appreciated different experience when so many movies nowadays can be so samey.

Bone Tomahawk

Jesus ****ing christ at that deputy guy's death!! Like what the actual **** (Just had to get that out the way first because oh my god that was one of the most horrific things I've ever seen!) So yeah I have some mixed feelings about this film because first of all it took me a while to realise why this would be considered a horror film. Apart from the opening scene it started off quite slow, albeit intriguing and enjoyable, but I was thinking for a while that the whole thing was going to be about their journey across the desert as it seemed to go on for a while and I wasn't really here for that. And don't get me wrong I was still enjoying it, it was well acted, well written, it held my interest etc, I think I just expected a bit more (although maybe I wouldn't have if this wasn't part of a halloween themed thing so I don't really hold that against it). BUT! Once they were captured it changed quite dramatically, and I don't know if it was just because I was caught off guard with it or had been lulled into a false sense of security given the pacing of it beforehand but I found the remainder of the film really quite punishing (in a good way <3). Like I said, the deputy's's death was absolutely horrific and once that happened I was constantly on the edge of my seat. I was willing the captives plan to poison the cannibals to work just like they were willing them to drink it, I was willing O'Dwyer along when he was struggling with his leg and started crawling through the sand </3, I was desperately hoping that Kurt Russell wouldn't have his scalp ripped off and be split vertically in two... it's a great film that can involve me emotionally as much as this one did and all because of one moment, but then it wasn't really because of that moment it was because of everything that had gone before and built to it, without me even realising it was building, the whole atmosphere it created before completely pulling the rug from under me. And I really shouldn't have been shocked by how gruesome it became because I mean the very first shot in the film is a graphic one of someone's throat being slit, but I was. Everything that preceded suddenly made a lot more sense because I really cared about these characters, a lot more than I usually do in horror films where for the most part I don't really care who dies, or I actually want people to die, but in this one I was praying for no more deaths! Only a great film can achieve all of that and do so well to leave the impression that this one did.

Kurt Russell was absolutely brilliant, I haven't seen a lot of his films but he's always stand-out whenever I've seen him and his presence added a great deal to the film. Jack from Lost was really good too (the scene with his horse dying </3) (also did anyone else not even recognise it was him at first because I didn't), the whole cast was great but those two stood out the most. Oh I was surprised that there wasn't more of David Arquette though, with him being quite a big name I thought they'd have used him at the end rather than just tell us that he died at some point, not that that mattered though. (And I could be wrong about him even being a big name I just assume he is because I'm a massive Scream fan and he was married to Monica from Friends).

Anyway it's a film that will stay with me, it really made me feel and involved me and I feel like I went on a journey with it and it's characters. It was intriguing and shocking and kinda unique, I can't really think of many (any?) films similar to it so to be that different and still achieve what it sets out too without any real established template there is a huge achievement.... I'm still not entirely sure if I'd call it a halloween film (but I nominated 'Death Becomes Her' so who am I to talk), and although I can see how all the middle bits had value after watching the film as a whole, the fact that I felt at times that I wasn't THAT interested in those parts I suppose has to go against it. Like I'd recommend this film to people but I'd have to tell them to stick with it. And really that's more to do with the fact that the film breaks genre conventions and veers away from what you'd expect, which I suppose is a good thing rather than it being a fault with the film  ... so yeah mixed feelings like I said about all of that tbh.

But I want more films like this, films that aren't typical to their genre and explore mixing horror with other themes :clap1:

Bone Tomahawk

This was one of the 10 movies that I sent to Cal, I was pretty excited for it, but it was so ****ing boring for me. I blame everybody else who voted for it. Thanks for nothing.

I **** you not, I genuinely dozed off for a bit. I didn't care for the characters, they were neither relatable nor likeable. I didn't care for the storyline, did they even know where the were walking to? They just seemed to be wandering aimlessly. I didn't find it scary or creepy, actually the whole thing just reminded me of a South Park episode where the kids go on a school trip to the Pioneer Village, which is just full of workers pretending (badly) to be from another time in the west. https://media3.giphy.com/media/3o6ZtiYcDKbqOuWno4/200_s.gif I'm pretty sure the bad guys were off Power Rangers too? Pretty certain.

I guess I liked the scenery? The outfits? Idk not really, just feel like I should make a positive. I was just more interested in my iPad and my naps throughout.

------

I wrote all of that like an hour in to it cos I needed to pass the time, it was so ****ing slow. The second half was better, I still didn't care for the characters which is a large problem. Bit too gory for me too, I'm an innocent angel, but at least something was happening... I just didn't care. Also, I came to admire the horror/western mix, and figured my boredom might just be my disdain for Western films, so its got that going for it.

2/10.

Was satisfying to see Jack from Lost die actually, that was a long time coming. Always hated him, and a Western accent doesn't fool me, Jack. You're not the boss of EVERYTHING.

:joker: perhaps... but if it was entertaining me in the first place, I wouldn't have needed to anyway. On reflection, I think it was more the Western theme I was bored by. I've never enjoyed a Western movie before, and I actively avoid them nowadays. Probably would have enjoyed it if they were something cool like space pirates or horny backpackers.
