A van has ploughed into crowds in Barcelona's Ramblas tourist area.
Spanish police say several people have been injured in a "massive crash", while emergency services are urging people to stay away from the area around Plaça Catalunya.
Reports from the scene say people are taking cover in nearby shops and cafes.
Reuters news agency reports that emergency services have requested the closure of local metro and train stations.
Marc Esparcia, a 20-year-old student who lives in Barcelona, told the BBC: "There was a loud noise and everybody ran for cover. There were a lot people, lots of families [at the site], this is one of the most visited sites in Barcelona.
"I think several people were hit. It was horrible, there was panic. Terrible."
He said he was now taking cover inside a Starbucks coffee shop.

La Ramblas is one of the biggest tourist spots in Europe, takes forever walking up there because of how many people there always is. Hopefully there will be no casualties.

Terrible, hope it's not terrorism :(
The worrying thing seems to be that this has simply caught on as a method of attack. Of course when it's not an accident it's always "terrorism" in the broadest sense of the word... but it's certainly not confined to one group and doesn't seem to even necessarily involve ANY ideologies. It seems like (somehow) in 100 years of motor vehicles, people en masse hadn't realised that 2+ tonnes of metal travelling at speed makes a very effective weapon, and now they suddenly have and people are increasingly using that weapon. Really worrying tbh.

Running people over seemed to start at least in Europe with running over Lee Rigby RIP, from there it seems to have developed, its very effective and undetectable until it's too late

It's scary, methods of attacks have devolved in such a way that it makes it more difficult to track. Law enforcement agencies can track the sales of weapons and suspicious materials that can be used in bombs but what can they do if someone decides to get into a car and drive through a crowd?

From what i remember hearing on some documentary a while ago it used to be a method used by Palestinians in Israel. They'd plough down groups of Israelies who were at bus stops etc. Then ISIS adopted it in Europe.

Was only walking down Las Ramblas myself a few weeks ago, hits you hard when you see stuff like this in the news of places you've been.
I've been to Barcelona many times over the years and it has always crossed my mind how easy it would be to attack Las Ramblas. Barcelona is a busy city but that area particularly is a hub of activity for tourists and locals 24/7. Dread to think how terrifying it would be there during today's events.

The chief suspect in last Thursday's Barcelona attack made his escape on foot to the outskirts of the city where he hijacked a car, Spanish police say.
At a news briefing, they confirmed that Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, was suspected of driving the van which ploughed into dozens of people, killing 13.
CCTV footage in Spanish media appears to show him walking through a market district shortly after the attack.
A manhunt has been extended across Europe and police say he may be armed.
Some 90 minutes after mowing down dozens of people on the central Las Ramblas avenue, Abouyaaqoub fled to the city's university district, police say.
Abouyaaqoub is alleged to have hijacked the car before driving it through a police checkpoint and later abandoning the vehicle. Police say he may have crossed into France.
The male driver of the car, Pau Pérez, 34, from Vila Franca, was found stabbed to death in the back seat, becoming the 15th victim of the Barcelona bloodshed and a later attack in the resort of Cambrils

what a waste of life
the Iman who is suspected of radicalising the 12 in Ripon was Iman at a Mosque in Belgium for 5 months, he was reported to the authorities there as some of the Muslim community were not happy with his views and teaching.... yet he was free to return to Spain to radicalise these young men, the police really need to get a grip...if they are ignoring reports especially from within the muslim community there really is no hope

Agreed Cherie. For all of the anger about letting people into the country, there seems to be minimal interest paid towards us who govern and police it.
Any time people question the police (here, anyway, can't say I can pretend I know how Spain's works) you just get told "well they've stopped 95% of attacks". Not good enough really.
Its good to hear the Muslim community reported him to the authorities though, considering you always hear about Belgium being an extremist hotbed and how their are Muslim only parts of the country now, pretty reassuring to see they have the courage to report the extreme teachings
Don't think the Police really have any idea how to handle it anymore and maybe in places like Belgium its gotten overwhelming and sense they have lost control of areas
