View Full Version : Rylan: Why it would be wrong to axe BB

Rylan Clark-Neal has spoken out amid speculation that ‘Big Brother’ might not have long left on our screens.

Last week, the head of Channel 5 Ben Frow made headlines when he confessed he’d be “happier” if the show were no longer on the air, having taken over the channel when the reality juggernaut was still in the middle of a three-year contract.

With just one year left on its deal with Channel 5, Ben’s comments have sparked speculation that the programme’s days could be numbered, but Rylan has spoken out to say that pulling the plug wouldn’t be the right decision.

When HuffPost UK asked Rylan about the future of ‘Big Brother’ at the TV Choice Awards, he said: “As far as I’m aware, under my circumstances, ‘Big Brother’ is contracted for one more year.

“But in my personal opinion, ‘Big Brother’ is the only reality show that’s on telly that’s still reality, it’s not scripted, people aren’t told what to do, it’s a non-scripted reality show where we watch people in a house that decide what they wanna do, when they wanna do it.

“And I genuinely believe that ‘Big Brother’ will run for years and years, and I genuinely hope from the bottom of my heart that I’ll be part of it.”

He continued: “‘Big Brother’ is the only real reality show that’s left on the screen… you’ve got your TOWIEs, you’ve got your Love Islands and stuff like that, but ‘Big Brother’ is the only non-scripted reality show that’s left on the air.

“And it’s such a pleasure to be part of a show that literally makes itself.”

Rylan also told us that he felt the most recent series of the regular run of ‘Big Brother’ was successful in its mission to represent as much of contemporary Britain as possible.

He insisted: “It really showed different views, different beliefs, different beings, different faiths and different areas of the country, and I’m proud to be a part of a show that really, really showed that.

“And I’m really grateful that I was a host on a show that got to show a real cross-section of the United Kingdom as it is at this moment in time.”

Addressing the controversy that arose when the regular line-up featured a number of past stars from shows like ‘Ex On The Beach’ and ‘The Ibiza Weekender’, Rylan added: “Do you know what? At the end of the day, it’s really really hard to find people that have never been on TV before. Everyone’s been on TV.

“It’s quite hard to find people that have never had any TV experience, or modelling experience, or… on the circuit experience, to be perfectly honest. But I think we had great housemates this series.”

Rylan also spoke up to defend the most recent winner of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’, Sarah Harding, admitting she had a “wobble” shortly before launch night, leaving her in need of reassurance about whether she should take part in the show at all.

I actually agree. I am not a big fan of Rylan but he does seem like the only passionate one left, even Emma seems kinda over it :(

Was just about to post this

As much as I love B B it needs to go off the air for a few years and come back totally fresh (the includes presenters :hee: )

They just need to try getting normal housemates again and see what happen. If it doesn't work then axe it but getting reality people just isn't working. If normal people aren't auditioning anymore then they need to go out and literally look for people on the streets.

The recent celeb series was heading in the right direction and hopefully they are actually listening to the fans. We'll see I suppose...

In what sense? Do you mean production? (Because the only thing I can think of that was different was the exits and the start and end of Best Bits) Because it certainly felt a lot better handled than BB18's, but CBB20 was certainly one of the worse CBBs (despite it's amazing winner :flutter: )

What use is it being "non scripted" when it's heavily manipulated and full of people from scripted show backgrounds. Also lol @ hard finding normal people.

Tbf like 70 thousand people used to audition for bb I remember when I auditioned for bb5 there were thousands there it was like herding cattle!

The most recent one I attended there was barely anyone there and to people saying why don't they go out and scout people they do ive seen them in soho whilst working at g-a-y and wasnt approached the bastards lol.

I don't understand why people don't like Rylan I actually find him entertaining and he comes across as a massive fan of the show.

He makes everything about him, it may as well be called The Rylan Show instead of BOTS

Remember when he got a 300 episode show and Emma got nothing even though she's been with the show for more than 7 years?

Because he thinks he's bigger than the show and people watch for him, it's Rylan this and Rylan that, I swear he says his own name more times in a show than any of the HMs or all of the HMs put together

Has he seriously forgotten what it's like to not to be a celebrity in a celebrity circuit in the space of 6 years? Just because everybody he knows has been on TV doesn't mean there's nobody left who hasn't been on TV who will make good TV. Even the scripted shows manage to find nobodies and make them somebodies.

I half agree with this, sure they threw in a bit of manipulation but I feel like it died down a lot this series. Also the Dress up task was reminiscent of C4 years and the production was good. Even the cheerleading task was reminiscent of C4 (well, I know it was kind of like BB7's one). There were less tasks which meddled.

The best 3 day stretch of the series IMO was the three days between Jordan's eviction to Brandi/Paul's eviction from Tuesday-Friday during the Weds-Friday costume task. And ratings proved that as those 3 days were the highest rated consecutive shows (bar launch and final). It was better because it was arguments that weren't caused by BB.

But that said, still a lot of work to be done, but CBB is still IMO in a good position. Series 13-17 and 19-20 are actually liked.

Actually he's exactly what the show doesn't need...yet another person acting up to the cameras and had appeared on multiple reality shows prior to big brother

I agree and I think the rest of the bb fans agree that big brother is a force of nature and doesn't need manipulation from producers. It's supposed to be a social experiment and the best scenes come naturally without outside contact, producer manipulation and launch night twists which allways fall flat.

Just chuck them in and let the carnage begin lol.

I agree with him - for all its flaws BB is still the closest thing there is to true reality television and hes right about how the show makes itself and that's the appeal. This CBB is the first time I've watched BOTS regularly in ages and I was quite impressed with Rylan how genuinely into the show he is and how capable he is of honing in on the main issues and asking the right questions. It's not an easy task when the BOTS audience often can't make an intelligent point between them and when the guests clearly haven't been watching most of the show half the time

I felt it was a bit more light and maybe charming than usual, not that much though as it's CBB. Was this series talked about much as I only really saw it on snapchat, never heard it in actual conversation since like Bear

He is right...but of course its not hard to find people who havent done TV before...they purposely seek out these people to try and get ratings up. And whilst its not scripted, the producers try day in day out to force arguments.

I genuinely think if they had an actual back to basics series, the viewers could go back up again. BB is unlike anything else on TV and really...should always work aslong as its left alone to develop at its own pace
