View Full Version : Parents appalled after failing school sets army-like rules
Pupils at one of the strictest schools in the country have been told to be bed by 9pm and up at 6.30am as part of an effort to turn its fortunes around.
Only 30% of pupils at Great Yarmouth High School got a pass in English and maths at GCSE this summer, ranking it as the worst performing school in Norfolk.
[...]
New measures include a warning to pupils that they could have their mobiles confiscated for weeks if caught using them and a directive to walk single file in corridors.
Pupils have also been told they will be passed a bucket if they feel like they will be sick in class.
‘If you vomit – no problem! You’ve got your bucket. That’s probably all your body wanted – to vomit. If you are really ill we will make sure you get all the attention you need.’

You don't need those kind of rules.
My school is evidence of that. A state school, some of the best results in the country.
Like don't be lax but don't be OTT either.
For example taking your phone off you for a few days instead of a term or not at all.

So you will create a bunch of adults who might get decent grades at school and improve school rankings; but will have too much fear of authority and not enough individualism or creativity to ever rise above mediocrity in their careers.
Good stuff.

Get them robots marching in single file, trained up to get good jobs and pay those lucrative taxes. Stay chained to the rhythm.

Why not start with the teachers ,and more importantly, the SLT. That's probably where the problems lie rather than the pupils' sleeping habits.

What a terrible headteacher.
If the school is failing you don't come down on the students, you come down on the staff since there is where the problem will lie. Headteachers like this twat who are only focused on reaching targets and not, you know, education, should not be in the profession. Schools shouldn't be ran like a company, kids should not be treated like products.
If a teacher tried to tell me what time to go to bed I'd have told them to sit on a knife and swivel and the whole keeping mobiles for weeks thing is ridiculous, I hope the parents start invoicing the head for the bills if he's gonna keep phones for that long.
It is also worth mentioning that he is not allowing retainers in a letter sent to parents. Which is absurd. You can find the full document here: http://www.inspirationtrust.org/news/?pid=968&nid=19&storyid=1247
