I grew up with the landing light on in the hallway so it's become natural for me to have that on with the door open a tiny bit.

Apparently though to get the best sleep no light should be visible?...

Open, when the kids were small you listen out and the cats would scratch the door to hell if it was closed to get in. Cats are entitled creatures they don't believe anywhere should be closed to them.
