I think many nations will send second, third or even fourth rate players to this and save the stars for more important competitions.
We should never have got rid of the Home nations championships, which were a successful tournament for a hundred years (barring the two wars and one year for civil unrest in Northern Ireland) between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
who on earth thought that lot up, it's a contrived mess. If it also means an end to friendlies in the proper sense, it removes the possibility of playing South American opposition other than in a competitive finals, or that's how it seems, but who knows with this shower of ****

^ I think they said before there's still going to be time for friendlies with, for example, South American teams.
In general I like the Nations League idea because I think friendly football matches are pointless.
There's a slightly weird twist though where one team from each of the four leagues will qualify for Euro 2020, which could result in a minnow team qualifying, or a team (maybe) trying to get relegated to a lower league to make qualification for the next Euros easier.

They tried bringing a version of that back with the Nations Cup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nations_Cup_(football)) in 2011 - England didn't take part, but it wasn't very interesting.

Wales produced an exhibition of sparkling attacking football as they thrashed the Republic of Ireland in their Nations League opener to give manager Ryan Giggs a handsome victory in his first competitive match in charge.....

I like the idea as it stops so many pointless friendly matches, and also makes the players get used to playing with each other more rather than having to quickly gel during a major knockout tournament when you've not played with each other before or on a regular basis.

I can't believe that the Referee's were incompetent yet again during an England game.
The fair result was 2-2 but clearly the goalkeeper can fall on top of our striker and still get the free kick rather than letting us have our goal that we rightfully earned.

Quite a bit of surprises in National League already:
France loses to Denmark at home, England loses to Hungary, Belgium gets completely mauled by Netherlands...
Kevin Keegan retired from football in 1984, England haven't produced a better player than him since then.
We just don't produce the best players in the World anymore like we used to. Gascoigne had the potential to be but he didn't have the mentality for it.
Shearer, Beckham and Rooney were great players but they were never close to being the best in the World.
We're an average football nation now when once we were the top dogs.

England was nearly Euroopan Champion last year though. That doesn't mean we produce the best players in the World, that just means we had a decent months football as a team. Any team can have a decent month. Greece won that title in 2004. I'm talking about producing the Messi's and Ronaldo's of their time.
Not since Kevin Keegan can England have a reasonable claim to have the best player in the World. And before Keegan players such as Dixie Dean, Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney, Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Moore and even Duncan Edwards who died aged 21 were all considered the very elite of World players at some point in their careers.
Since Keegan no English player has been seen as having a reasonable shout as being the best player in the World. In the 80s Bryan Robson and Gary Lineker were never seen at the same level as Maradona, Platini or Van Basten. In the 90s and early 2000s, Shearer and Beckham were never seen at the same level as Brazilian Ronaldo or Zidane and since then Gerrard and Rooney were never at the level of Messi and Ronaldo.
Shearer is probably the best player England produced since Keegan and he was never considered the best in the World at any point of his career, nor was Gascoigne, nor was Beckham, nor was Rooney, nor is Kane.
If most of the best football historians picked the top ten English players ever you'd be lucky to have one player post Kevin Keegan in that list.
I will say that had it not been for injuries that Michael Owen maybe could have gone onto be considered the best in the World but it just didn't happen for him.

Belgium wasn't too bad but we dutch were just too solid in our own gameplay

we might do worse now against Wales with different players here and there i think
We need to get rid of Southgate and replace him with Howe or Potter

You won't get an aspiring club manager take on the England job, realistically it will always be someone at the end of their career or someone pretty unproven like Southgate was

Yeah, imo it gives lesser ranked countries a better chance to improve rather than always losing heavily to a much higher ranked team.
which has been the main purpose of this
and it gives top nations a chance to more compete against similar top quality teams, and also one more trophy to compete for in the end, for the qualifiers from the top groups from division A
while from divisions B & C can first try and developing their squads better and fight for a chance of promotion
+ apparently for some lower ranked teams (divisions B, C) some advantages may be possible in any euro or world cup qualifiers, in terms of who might make it to play offs, increased chances via nations league points (another tie breaker in case of ties for 3rd/4th place there)

Great decision to bring Maguire on to shore up the defence at 3-0
Hopefully Southgate does the honourable thing and resign now .
Worse home defeat since 1928
Losing twice in 11 days against Hungary who are three places behind Scotland in the world rankings ..
Hungary recently lost at home to Serbia then lost home AND away against the mighty Albania

I've never rated him as a manager. He got a dream draw in the World Cup and failed against Croatia and then another great draw on home soil in the Euros and failed again.
He's been dining out on getting far in tournaments but for the draws he's had in those tournaments and the quality of players he's had, who all play in the best league in the World, then he should be making finals and probably winning.
The World Cup even with a good draw they still only scraped past Columbia on penalties and then fell to Croatia.
In the Euro's they only had 1 major test on route to the final against the Germans and then in the final they played in defensive mode on their home ground and were deservedly beaten.
He should have won at least 1 of those tournaments, he had the best opportunity of any England manager in my lifetime.
Time to change manager, although I don't see any English managers out there with a good CV at present. All the top jobs in this country are managed by foreign managers.
Southgate never earned the right to manage England .. it was just circumstances .. it just fell into his lap

Agree with all that but not sure its worth getting rid of Southgate now with only two games until the World Cup. Think we'll just have to roll with it and hope for the best, after this a new manager could have 18 months leading up to the next Euros to settle in and find his best team
Fed up of people using the excuse that the players are knackered after a long season etc. as well - they'd normally be playing a World Cup right now! And Southgate has rotated so much that they've all had plenty of rest

You’d think it was just US who’ve been playing this season

to me the england team are suffering from man united syndrome, where they are good players, but they just can't be arsed playing for whatever reason
Southgate - TalkSport interview
With negatives comes positives , we know now that maybe some of the younger players maybe aren’t as far on as we thought . It’s possible that we’re looking at Euro 2024 before they’re ready.
That’s one bizarre positive !!
He isn’t even a man of his word .
A few days ago he said he won’t stay if he’s not wanted .. last night the whole stadium ridiculed him and sang derogatory ditties towards him

He has to go and NOW after stating things like this a few days ago .
Gareth Southgate has insisted that he will not outstay his welcome as England manager and said he is aware of the growing criticism of his team selections. Southgate, 51, added that he believed his players remain behind him and that he can oversee further improvements in results.
England host Italy today in what is the sides’ first meeting since the Euro 2020 final defeat on penalties at Wembley in July.

changing the manager 2 games before the world cup isn't a smart move. If he fails at the world cup then he will be gone.

his speciality seems to be playing out of form players. Declan Rice was embarrassing on the interview, saying they played really well :skull:
